OBJECTIVES: Intraarticular steroid injection is traditionally contraindicated during acute septic arthritis. However, there is abundant evidence which proves that the damage to the joint is not only due to the direct effect of bacteria, but also to the local protective mechanisms evoked by the organism. This study examines the role of the vegetation in catheter-induced experimental endocarditis in predisposing to bacterial colonization of cardiac valves and in influencing the course of the disease and response to penicillin therapy. Platelet-fibrin vegetations developed at areas of valvular trauma and were colonized when Streptococcus viridans were injected intravenously. Two different studies were performed in subhuman primates in an attempt to induce symptoms of tardive dyskinesia. The first study lasted for over 5 years. This involved elderly Macaca speciosa. In acute experiments on 70 dogs at the late stage of the organism response to acute massive blood loss hemotransfusions, infusion of decalcinated gelatinol, or of a 0.9% solution of sodium chloride were incapable of preventing death of the animals. Immunologic methods have been used with varying success in the diagnosis and prognosis of systemic mycoses in animals. Information on the application of the tests and on the interpretation of test results in monitoring therapy was complied. Serotesting provided diagnostic and prognostic data in immunocompetent patients, and predicted relapse in one case after apparent clinical cure. In human patients, DEET toxicosis has been associated with the development of a toxic encephalopathy characterized by tremors, seizures, behavioral changes, and abnormal movements. Generally, DEET toxicosis in companion animals is of short duration and is characterized by vomiting, tremors, ataxia, and excitation.
