Essential Oils of Aromatic Plants with Antibacterial, Anti-Biofilm and Anti-Quorum Sensing Activities against Pathogenic Bacteria.

Both the ability of bacteria to form biofilms and communicate through quorum sensing allows them to develop different survival or virulence … activity. The cytotoxicity activity of the EOs was evaluated on Vero cell line by using MTT method. Thymol-carvacrol-chemotype (I and II) oils from Lippia origanoides and Thymus vulgaris oil exhibited the higher antimicrobial activity with MIC values of 0.37-0.75 mg/mL. In addition, these EOs strongly inhibited the biofilm formation and violacein (QS) pr …

Chemical composition and anti-Helicobacter pylori effect of Satureja bachtiarica Bunge essential oil.

Resistance of H. pylori strains to common antibiotics has been developed in different parts of the world and continues to increase. It is im … hods. The chemical composition of essential oil was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Carvacrol (45.5%) and thymol (27.9%) were the primary constituents of oil, followed by p-cymene (4.4%), and γ-terpinene (4.0%). S. bachtiarica essential oil showed strong antibacterial activity against clinical isolates of H. pylori (17.6 ± 1.1 mm and 0.035 ± 0.13 μl/ml). Carva …

Synergistic effects and physiological responses of selected bacterial isolates from animal feed to four natural antimicrobials and two antibiotics.

In this study, 20 samples from three different sources of animal feed were investigated and six bacterial isolates were identified. The susceptibility of four natural antimicrobials, namely, eugenol, cinnamaldehyde, thymol, and carvacrol, against six of these isolates was determined. Carvacrol and eugenol showed better inhibitory effects with larger zones of inhibition. The minimal inhibitory concentration for a range of antibiotics on the susceptibility of two isolates (namely, Sphingomonas paucimobilis and Klebsiella oxytoca) was investigated using the VITEK® 2 microbiological identification…

Detection and stability of Japanese encephalitis virus RNA and virus viability in dead infected mosquitoes under different storage conditions.

A semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was evaluated for detection of Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus in infected mosquitoes stored under simulated northern Australian summer conditions. The effect of silica gel, thymol, and a combination of the two on RNA stability and virus viability in dead mosquitoes were also examined. While JE virus RNA was relatively stable in mosquitoes held for up to 14 days after death, viable virus was not detected after day 1. Thymol vapor inhibited fungal contamination. Detection of single mosquitoes infected with JE virus in large pools of mosquitoes was …

Effectiveness of Volatile Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (VNADESs) for the Green Extraction of Chelidonium majus Isoquinoline Alkaloids.

The Chelidonium majus plant is rich in biologically active isoquinoline alkaloids. These alkaline polar compounds are isolated from raw mate … ids. The roots and herb of the plant were subjected three times to extraction with various menthol, thymol, and camphor mixtures and with water and methanol (acidified and nonacidified). It has been shown that alkaloids can be efficiently isolated using menthol-camphor and menthol-thymol mixtures. In comparison with the extraction with acidified methanol …

A herbal antifungal formulation of Thymus serpillum, Origanum vulgare and Rosmarinus officinalis for treating ovine dermatophytosis due to Trichophyton mentagrophytes.

A number of herbal products with anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antimycotic properties are available for dermatological usage. The successful treatment of 13 sheep affected by ringworm due to Trichophyton mentagrophytes with a mixture consisting of essential oils (EOs) of Thymus serpillum 2%, Origanum vulgare 5% and Rosmarinus officinalis 5% in sweet almond (Prunus dulcis) oil. The effectiveness of EOs and of the major components of the mixture (thymol, carvacrol, 1,8 cineole, α-pinene, p-cymene, γ-terpinene) against the fungal clinical isolate was evaluated by a microdilution test. Thirtee…

Role of Thymus ciliatus (Thyme) to Ameliorate the Acute Neurotoxicity Induced by Bisphenol A: In Vivo Supported with Virtual Study.

Background/Objectives: The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of bisphenol A (BPA) exposure on neurobehavioral testing in young Wistar rats and to evaluate the therapeutic potential of Thymus ciliatus (TEO) essential oil to attenuate the damage induced by this chemical toxin. Methods: The essential oil was extracted by hydro-distillation (yield of 2.26%), and the characterization by GC-MS indicates that the major components of Thymus ciliatus oil are thymol (63.33%), p-cymene (13.4%), and σ-terpinene (6.69%). Acute BPA intoxication was induced with a dose of 50 mg/kg orall…

Sub-MICs of Carum copticum and Thymus vulgaris influence virulence factors and biofilm formation in Candida spp.

BACKGROUND: Emergence of drug-resistant strains of Candida and inefficiency of conventional antifungal therapy has necessitated the search for alternative and new antifungal agents. Inhibition of virulence and biofilm are the potential drug targets. In this study, the oils of Carum copticum, Thymus vulgaris and their major active compound thymol as revealed by Gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-GC/MS) analysis were tested for their inhibitory activity against growth to determine sub-MIC values against 27 drug-resistant strains of Candida spp. METHODS: Brothmacrodi…

Hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvent-based DLLME for the green HPLC determination of paraben and alcohol preservatives in water samples.

A simple, rapid, and environmentally friendly dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) method using hydrophobic natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) was developed for the simultaneous determination of six parabens and phenoxyethanol in water samples. The extraction performance of several NADES composed of thymol, menthol, and fatty acids was evaluated, selecting a thymol: decanoic acid system (2:1 M ratio) as the optimal extractant. Critical experimental variables were optimized using a multivariate approach combining Plackett-Burman and central composite designs. Under optimal condi…

Efficient Extraction of Nanoplastics from Aqueous Media Using Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents: Experimental and Molecular Insights.

Microplastics and nanoplastics are persistent contaminants of global concern due to their ubiquity in aquatic systems and their potential ecological and toxicological impacts. Conventional solvent-based extraction methods are often inefficient or environmentally harmful, emphasizing the need for greener alternatives. In this study, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) composed of thymol (Thy), menthol (Men), and fatty acids were prepared and evaluated for the extraction of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics from aqueous media. Extraction experiments were performed at 25 °C under controlled agitat…
