A new quaternary compound in the Ca-Eu-Sn-O system, namely calcium europium tin heptaoxide, Ca1.5 Eu3Sn0.5 O7, was prepared by solid-state reaction at 2073 K. All atoms in the structure are on 4i special positions (on mirrors) in space group C2/m. Ca/Eu sites are situated within two O octahedra and within two sevenfold coordination sites surrounded by O-capped trigonal prisms. A Ca/Eu/Sn site is coordinated by five O atoms. Metallic tin nanorods were synthesized by a sonochemical method employing the polyol process. In the reaction a solution of SnCl2 in ethylene glycol was exposed to high-intense ultrasound irradiation. The phase and elemental compositions, and thermal properties of the as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, EDX, SAED, XPS, DSC, TGA, and BET measurements. The morphologies of the products were further characterized with SEM, TEM, and HRTEM. Despite the increasing industrial use of indium-tin oxide (ITO) to manufacture flat-panel displays, such as liquid-crystal displays or plasma display panels for televisions, little is known about the potential health hazard induced by occupational exposure to indium compounds. Two inorganic tin compounds, as well as mono- and tri-substituted methyl-, butyl-, and phenyltins were examined for their interactions with a hydrocarbon-using strain of Candida maltosa. Neither of the inorganic tins (SnII and SnIV) inhibited growth at concentrations up to 0.8 mM while binding to the yeast cells occurred to levels of 0.3 and 0.23 mM Sn/g cells, respectively. The photocurrent transient generated by bacteriorhodopsin (bR) on a tin-oxide electrode is due to pH change and not to charge displacement as previously assumed. Films of either randomly oriented or highly oriented purple membranes were deposited on transparent electrodes made of tin-oxide-coated glass. Tin (IV)-protoporphyrin-IX alpha (tin-heme) may have use in treating neonatal jaundice. To evaluate its effect on bilirubin metabolism, we measured bile-bilirubin excretion in adult, male Sprague-Dawley rats (350-500 g). After a 4-h baseline period, tin-heme (100 mumol/kg) or buffer was injected subcutaneously, and bile was collected for 19 h. A modified method is described for the preparation of albumin nanospheres for labelling with 99mTc by investigating the absorption behaviour of tin as a reducing agent on albumin nanospheres. These albumin nanospheres can be used for studying the reticuloendothelial system, especially that of the liver. The labelling method is very simple, and the efficiency of labelling with 99mTc is higher than 97 per cent.

Some new di-n-butyltin and tin(IV) complexes of the type Bu2SnL, Bu2SnL2 and SnL2 (where L = anions of Schiff bases derived from S-substituted dithiocarbazates and fluoro-aniline) have been prepared and screened for their antitumor activity in P 388 Lymphocyte Leukaemia system. These complexes do not show any toxicity at low dose levels and display T/C values in the range 94-124. Di-n-butyltin complex derived from salicylaldehyde-S-methyl dithiocarbazate has been found to be the most active in this series.
