Metastatic palatine tonsil cancer is extremely rare, with nearly 100 such tumors reported in the English literature. The prognosis of metastatic palatine tonsil cancer is poor. A 53-year-old man presented with painless left palatine tonsillar swelling and a cervical mass following right hemicolectomy for an ascending colon adenocarcinoma. Physical examination showed an ulcerated mass located on the upper pole of the left palatine tonsil. A punch biopsy was taken for histological examination which showed a moderately-differentiated adenocarcinoma. The patient was treated with palliative radioth

PURPOSE: Fractionated high-dose-rate (fr.HDR) and pulsed-dose-rate (PDR) brachytherapy (BT) regimens, which simulate classical continuous low-dose-rate (LDR) interstitial radiation therapy (IRT) schedules, have been developed for clinical use. This article reports the initial results using these novel schedules in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tonsillar fossa (TF) and/or soft palate (SP).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1990 and 1994, 38 patients with TF and SP tumors (5 T1, 22 T2, 10 T3, and 1 T4) were treated by fr.HDR or PDR brachytherapy, either alone or in combination with external

Radiation-induced sarcoma is a rare complication of radiation therapy. We report a case of radiation-induced chondrosarcoma of the maxilla. An 80-year-old Persian woman developed radiation-induced chondrosarcoma of the left maxilla 7 years after combined chemotherapy and external beam radiation therapy for the Ann Arbor stage IE malignant lymphoma of the right tonsil. She underwent suboptimal tumour resection and died due to extensive locoregional disease 8 months later. An English language literature search of Medline using the terms chondrosarcoma, radiation-induced sarcoma and maxilla revea

AIM: Introduction of a safe and reliable method for reconstruction of soft tissue defects after excision of T1-T2 and borderline carcinomas of the posterior part of the oral cavity and mesopharynx. METHOD: Operation of two male patients suffering from tonsillolingual carcinoma, one with recurrent tumour after irradiation, the other with untreated primary and neck metastasis. After excision of the tumour with mandibular splitting method only a random buccal transposition flap was applied for reconstruction. The flap was adapted anatomically into the defect. It is a modification of previously de

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to discuss the experience of one tumor registry with performing tonsillectomy in the diagnostic approach to unknown head and neck primary tumors. It also describes the importance of including tonsillectomy in this evaluation algorithm.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective chart review was done of 68 patients with either tonsillar or unknown primary squamous cell carcinoma culled from 829 patients seen from 1956 to 1996 at the head and neck tumor registry at the Naval Medical Center San Diego.
METHODS: Records from the head and neck tumor registry, radiation

This analysis reviews the treatment results of 58 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil who were treated by radical irradiation to the primary, with operation reserved for radiation failures. Postirradiation radical neck dissection was sometimes added as part of the initial treatment plan. The local control and absolute survival rates for T1-T2 lesions were quite good, and complications were minimal. On the other hand, the local control and absolute survival for T3-T4 lesions were only fair, and complications generally more severe, although mandibulectomy for osteonecrosis was no

OBJECTIVE: The literature is divided with regards to contralateral tonsillectomy in a known/suspected case of ipsilateral tonsillar malignancy. In this study, we evaluate the incidence of indolent synchronous contralateral tonsillar malignancy (SCTC) in patients with known ipsilateral tonsillar malignancy.
METHODS: All patients diagnosed with ipsilateral tonsillar carcinoma (TC) at a tertiary teaching center between January 2016 and December 2019 were screened. None of the patients were suspected to have bilateral TC. All patients underwent appropriate imaging in the form of Magnetic resonanc

To analyze the medical literature devoted to work-up, epidemiology, local control, survival, complications and sequelae after conservative treatment for early-stage squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsillar region. An analysis of the PubMed (1975-2016) database was performed using the following keywords and associations: "tonsil/tonsillar region/oropharynx" AND "squamous cell carcinoma" AND "early-stage (I-II; T1-2N0M0)" AND "radiation therapy/radiotherapy" OR "conservative surgery/oropharyngectomy/transoral surgery/radical tonsillectomy". The search retrieved 10 retrospective series documentin

PURPOSE: Clustering of neural autoantibodies in patients with paraneoplastic neurologic disorders may predict tumor type. A mathematical analysis of neural autoantibody clusters was performed in 78,889 patients undergoing evaluation for a suspected paraneoplastic autoimmune neurologic disorder. Tumor predictive autoantibody profiles were confirmed in sera from patients with histologically proven tonsillar cancer, thymoma, and lung cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of note, 78,889 patient sera were tested for 15 defined neural autoantibodies (1.2 million tests). The observed and hypothesized frequ

Financial considerations have led to suggestions that routine microscopic evaluation of tonsils and adenoids is neither cost effective nor clinically indicated. However, the possibility of tonsillar lymphoma must be carefully weighed when making institutional policy decisions. One way to find an appropriate algorithm for pathologic examination is to examine the characteristics of biopsy-proved tonsillar lymphomas. To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics of tonsillar lymphoma, we performed a retrospective analysis of patients who had non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and large-cell or Bur

Reconstruction of the soft palate after tumor surgery can present a challenge in closing the defect created and achieving a sufficient functional result. We present a new technique for primary reconstruction after partial or total resections of the soft palate. The method is based on the combination of a cranially pedicled pharyngeal mucosa muscle flap with an oral mucosal transposition flap. If partial resection of the lateral pharyngeal wall is also required, the method can be combined with a masseter crossover flap. Our present experience has shown that the surgical technique used will resu

A 58-year-old man had a left jugulodigastric mass, which was found to be cystic by computed tomography, and no evidence of other lesions. Grossly and histologically, the surgical specimen consisted of a thin-walled, fluid-filled cyst lined by squamous epithelium that varied in appearance from benign to invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The findings supported a differential diagnosis of branchial cleft carcinoma (BCCA) versus cystic growth of a lymph node metastasis from an occult malignancy. On this basis, guided biopsies of the upper aerodigestive tract were performed, with strong suspicion o
