Fabrication and anti-microbial evaluation of drug loaded polylactide space filler intended for ridge preservation following tooth extraction.

BACKGROUND: The preservation or reduction of alveolar ridge resorption following tooth extraction is important in patients especially for those intended for implants at a later stage. One way to achieve this is by using membranes, graft materials, and biodegradable space fillers to prevent alveolar bone resorption and promote regeneration. A major attraction for using biodegradable and biocompatible polymers as space fillers for ridge preservation is their safety profile in comparison to xenograft materials like lyophilized bone and collagen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biocompatible polylactide s

Socket Shield: A Case Report.

It is fairly common to remove a severely compromised tooth and provide rehabilitation by means of an implant. Resorption of alveolar bone after extraction resulting in loss of bone height and width is an unpleasant sequelae causing difficulty in implant placement. Few procedures have been promoted to attain the required bone height and width, such as guided bone regeneration socket preservation with the use of various graft materials and barrier membranes. The disadvantages of these techniques are some amount of ridge height loss and loss of buccal/facial, ridge contour. The socket shield tech

Dimensional Ridge Preservation with a Novel Highly Porous TiO(2) Scaffold: An Experimental Study in Minipigs.

Despite being considered noncritical size defects, extraction sockets often require the use of bone grafts or bone graft substitutes in order to facilitate a stable implant site with an aesthetically pleasing mucosal architecture and prosthetic reconstruction. In the present study, the effect of novel TiO(2) scaffolds on dimensional ridge preservation was evaluated following their placement into surgically modified extraction sockets in the premolar region of minipig mandibles. After six weeks of healing, the scaffolds were wellintegrated in the alveolar bone, and the convex shape of the alveo

Dynamic polarization shifting from M1 to M2 macrophages in reduced osteonecrosis of the jaw-like lesions by cessation of anti-RANKL antibody in mice.

Denosumab-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (DRONJ), which mainly occurs in cancer patients receiving anti-receptor activator NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL) antibody, reduces oral health-related quality of life. However, the exact mechanisms of and definitive treatment strategies for DRONJ remain unknown. We hypothesized that cessation of denosumab heals and/or ameliorates DRONJ, since it is a protein-based antibody agent, although stopping denosumab should be avoided in clinical situations. Therefore, the aims of this study were: 1) to create a healing and/or amelioration murine model of DRONJ-like

[Influencing Hard and Soft Tissue Changes Following Tooth Extraction].

Influencing Hard and Soft Tissue Changes Following Tooth Extraction Abstract. Influencing Hard and Soft Tissue Changes Following Tooth Extraction The loss of a tooth leads to the initiation of resorption processes and thus to the remodeling of the tissues of the alveolar process. At the hard tissue level, this resorption mainly affects the bundle bone at the buccal side of the extracted tooth and occurs most rapidly in the first weeks and months after extraction. Tissue changes occur not only at the level of the hard tissue (bone), but also at the level of the soft tissue. These changes lead t

Assessment of soft and hard tissue characteristics of ridge preservation at molar extraction sites with severe periodontitis: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Changes in alveolar bone dimension after tooth extraction may affect placement of the subsequent implant, resulting in ridge deficiency that can adversely impact long-term implant stability or aesthetics. Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) was effective in reducing the amount of ridge resorption following tooth extraction. There is sparse evidence regarding the benefit of ARP at periodontally compromised molar extraction sockets. This study will be a randomized trial to assess the soft tissue contour, radiographical, and histological changes of ARP at molar extraction sites in order

Socket Preparation for Delayed Implant Placement Using a Mineralized Cancellous Allograft.

Various materials have been used for extraction socket preservation in anticipation of implant placement or to limit resorption of socket walls. Materials have ranged from autogenous bone, allografts, and xenografts to synthetics. Ideally, the graft material being placed into the socket at the time of extraction should fully convert to host bone to yield vital bone that will permit implant osseointegration with as much contact between bone and the implant surface as possible. This article reviews different materials and presents two cases in which extraction of a molar was required and future
