Occlusal changes following posterior tooth loss in adults. Part 1: a study of clinical parameters associated with the extent and type of supraeruption in unopposed posterior teeth.

PURPOSE: One of the barriers to restoring an edentulous space may be the supraeruption of an unopposed tooth to occupy some or all of the space needed for prosthetic replacement. The aim of this study was to determine the extent and type of supraeruption associated with unopposed posterior teeth and to investigate the relationship between these and oral and patient factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Diagnostic casts of 100 patients with an unopposed posterior tooth and of 100 control patients were scanned and analyzed to record the extent of supraeruption, together with other clinical parameters

Enlarged occlusal surfaces on first molars due to severe attrition and hypercementosis: examples from prehistoric coastal populations of Texas.

During an examination of prehistoric samples from the Texas coast, individuals consistently exhibited a suite of traits on the first molars that included severe wear, hypercementosis, and resorption of the buccal margin of the alveolus. The occlusal surface of the tooth was worn below the cervical margin, with the subsequent incorporation of the buccal surface of the buccal roots into the occlusal plane. This expanded occlusal surface, which extends the buccal surface beyond the normal edge of the tooth, is composed of a combination of original enamel, secondary dentin, and cementum. There is

Early Pleistocene Serotine Bat Eptesicus praeglacialis (Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) from the Taurida Cave in Crimea.

The cranial and mandibular remains of a large serotine bat Eptesicus praeglacialis Kormos, 1930 are described from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave in the central Crimea. This is the first finding of the skull material of E. praeglacialis and the first record of the species in Crimea. Judging by the tooth wear stages, the remains of both young and adult specimens are present in the taphocenosis. The small mammal tooth marks on the bones (caused by eating the remnants of soft tissues) in the absence of signs of digestion, characterizing materials from the predatory bird pellet…

Oral findings in osteogenesis imperfecta.

The dentitions of twenty-eight patients, each of whom had either an autosomal dominant or a sporadic osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) syndrome, were evaluated. The diagnosis of dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) could be established in all seven patients with dominantly inherited OI in three families, while all eight persons with dominant OI in three other families had normal teeth. Of the thirteen remaining patients with OI, twelve had no family history of the disorder; four had DI and eight had normal teeth. One person had a family history of OI and DI. All patients with abnormal tooth wear and spon…

Success of Feather Margin Preparation for Full Metal Prosthodontic Crowns in the Canine Teeth in 84 Pet and Working Dogs (2005-2017).

Medical and dental records of Veterinary Dental Specialties and Oral Surgery were searched to identify dogs that received full metal prosthodontic crowns on canine teeth, using a feather or knife edge preparation between 2005 and 2017. A total of 160 teeth in 84 dogs were included in the study. Current follow-up by telephone, electronic mail, or electronic messaging was conducted, in addition to thorough record review for in-person recheck examinations. Treatment was considered successful if the prosthodontic crown was in place and no further or additional injury to the tooth had occurred at t

Sucrose Is Not the Whole Story: Risk Factors and Oral Health at the Contact (Yakutia, Siberia-16th/19th).

(1) Background: contact between indigenous and European populations has often resulted in changes in oral health attributed to the introduct … l pathologies leading to death. Assimilation into the Russian Orthodox culture has led to decreased tooth wear and an increase in tooth loss. Dental health evolves only two centuries after the contact. (5) Conclusions: the confrontation with historical data suggests that changes are not related to the growing importance of sucrose but to a combined action: t …

Cupped lesions of early onset dental erosion in young southeast Queensland adults.

BACKGROUND: Dental erosion manifests as cupped lesions on cusp apices and in fissures of teeth in patients from southeast Queensland referred with excessive tooth wear. When found in young adults, these lesions may indicate early onset of active dental erosion. If the numbers and extent of cupped lesions increase with age, erosion may be a slow cumulative process. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recorded the presence or absence and the relative sizes of cupped lesions from all cusps and occlusal fissures on premolar and permanent molar teeth from study models by image analysis. Type-speci…

Dentine hypersensitivity--guidelines for the management of a common oral health problem.

UNLABELLED: Dentine hypersensitivity (DHS) remains a worldwide under-reported and under-managed problem, despite making some dental treatments more stressful than necessary and having a negative impact on the patient's quality of life. This article is designed to build dental professionals' confidence and remove any confusion regarding the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of sensitive teeth caused by dentine hypersensitivity in those patients known to be at risk. There is a need for simple guidelines, which can be readily applied in general practice. However, it is also obvious that one str

Oromandibular Dystonia-Related Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis: A Case History Report.

Dystonia affecting the perioral and pharyngeal regions is called oromandibular dystonia (OMD). OMD can affect the jaw muscles and may cause trismus, mouth-closing disturbance, tooth wear/loss, and damage to the oral soft tissues and temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This case history reports a case of jaw-closing OMD accompanied by trismus-related TMJ osteoarthritis (OA). In the present case history, treatment for OMD was started as soon as the diagnosis of jaw-closing OMD was established, and dental treatment intervention for preventing its development or progression was considered at the same t…

Clinical evaluation of two pinless incisal edge repairs: a 24-month study.

Adhesive resin and composite resin were used to restore the central incisors in a 21-year-old woman at an emergency treatment. Two maxillary fractured incisors were restored (one after endodontic treatment) and reexamined over a period of 24 months (Fig 5). Some slight yellowing has been noted in the endodontically treated tooth, but it has not appreciably affected appearance. The patient did not object to the discoloration and no replacements or additions were done. The restorations showed no indications of excessive wear or physical damage during the examination period.

The future of fluorides and other protective agents in erosion prevention.

The effectiveness of fluoride in caries prevention has been convincingly proven. In recent years, researchers have investigated the preventive effects of different fluoride formulations on erosive tooth wear with positive results, but their action on caries and erosion prevention must be based on different requirements, because there is no sheltered area in the erosive process as there is in the subsurface carious lesions. Thus, any protective mechanism from fluoride concerning erosion is limited to the surface or the near surface layer of enamel. However, reports on other protective agents sh…

Microstrain in Maxillary Premolars With Noncarious Cervical Lesions Before and After Restoration: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Loss of cervical tooth structure due to noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) can weaken teeth and increase tooth strain. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vivo microstrain variations in human maxillary premolars with NCCLs before and after restoration with resin composite (RC) and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study was a split-mouth, randomized controlled clinical trial. Twenty patients aged 40-60 years with NCCLs in maxillary premolars were selected. Bite force was measured bilaterally. In Stage I, 10 patients with

How does smoking affect the clinical performance of a universal adhesive in non-carious cervical lesions? -An 18-month randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Smoking has a great impact on oral health status of the patients. As universal adhesives have become a routine dental adhesive choice, understanding the potential impact of smoking on their clinical performance is crucial. This study aimed to determine the 18-month clinical performance of a universal adhesive used with different application modes in non-carious cervical lesions(NCCLs) of smokers and non-smokers. METHODS: This double-blind, randomized, split-mouth superiority clinical trial included 47 participants(24 non-smokers and 23 smokers) presenting with at least three NCCLs

By comparing these radulae to radulae from control group, sandpaper-induced tooth wear patterns were identified and both area and volume loss could be quantified. In addition to the exact contact area of each tooth, conclusions about the 3D position of teeth and radular bending during feeding motion could be drawn. Furthermore, hypoth …

Dental tissue changes in juvenile and adult mice with osteogenesis imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a disorder of type I collagen, causes skeletal deformities as well as defects in dental tissues, which lead to increased enamel wear and smaller teeth with shorter roots. Mice with OI exhibit similar microstructural dentin changes, including reduced dentin tubule density and dentin cross-sectional area. However, the effects of these mutations on gross dental morphology and dental tissue volumes have never been characterized in the osteogenesis imperfecta murine (OIM) mouse model. Here we compare mineralized dental tissue measurements of OIM mice and unaffected wil

Redefining species concepts for the Pennsylvanian scissor tooth shark, Edestus.

This study reevaluates the tooth morphology used to define species within the genus Edestus (Chondrichthyes, Euchondrocephali). Known as the scissor tooth shark, Edestus produced a unique dentition of spiraled tooth families positioned in the symphysis (midline) of the upper and lower jaws. Morphometric analysis of more than 200 ejected teeth and intact spiral tooth whorls demonstrates that teeth from the upper and lower whorls differ in shape and ontogeny. Comparison of these data to the type specimens of 13 existing species reduces the number of morphologically distinct Edestus to just four

The residual edentulous arches--foundation for implants and for removable dentures; some clinical considerations. A review of the literature 1954-2012.

The maxillary and mandibular arches are present before tooth eruption and will develop and mature with tooth activities. Following tooth extraction, the healing wound fills in, partly, the space occupied formerly by the natural tooth. The blood coagulum that occupies the healing wound will be replaced by the residual ridge, a scar tissue, which becomes part of the edentulous arch. After tooth loss, the resulting edentulous arches undergo extensive remodeling changes, but remain indispensable, vital oral structures. The resorptive process of the edentulous jaws is limited. The maxillary and man
