Transmission of Schistosoma mansoni was monitored by routine snail sampling for Biomphalaria pfeifferi and by supplementary cercariometric measurements in 4 neighbouring study areas in Machakos District, Kenya. After 1 year, extensive, population-based chemotherapy with a single dose of praziquantel was given in 3 areas, but only minimal treatment in the fourth. In the year preceding treatment, seasonal transmission of S. mansoni and other non-human trematodes occurred in all 4 areas, despite some ecological differences and the effects of earlier treatment campaigns in 1 of the study areas. Chemotherapy of trematode infections has been studied intensively in the past. The compounds so far used for the treatment of those parasitic infections were not satisfactory, however, because of their poor tolerability and/or their limited anthelmintic efficacy. Since the introduction of tartar emetic in 1918, a number of antimonial as well as non-antimonial preparations have been used for the treatment of schistosomiasis. In the treatment of clonorchiasis with antimony preparations, gentian violet, emetine HCl, chloroquine diphosphate and dithiazanine iodide, only temporary clinical improvem…

A parasitological survey was conducted on the inhabitants of 6 villages of Likupang, Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, in August 1991. A total of 419 fecal samples were examined by using direct smear, flotation, formalin ether concentration, Harada-Mori culture and agar-plate culture techniques. Five nematode and 7 protozoan parasites were detected, while trematode and cestode infection was not observed. Soil-transmitted nematode infections were predominant. Among the younger inhabitants aged less than 15, positive rates of Ascaris, Trichuris and hookworm infections were almost sa

The trematode F. hepatica is an internal parasite of many species of animals including men. In ruminants, fasciolosis is an economically important disease often resulting in a chronic and sub-clinical infection. The mechanisms of immune responses of final hosts to this infection are still poorly understood. Experimental and clinical studies reported so far suggest that both humoral and cellular effectors of the immune response are important to control the duration of F. hepatica infection. However, there are considerable variation both inter-species and between various strains of the same spec

The importance of the glycolytic flux for the success of Biomphalaria-Schistosome sporocyst interaction was acertained in this study. Hexokinase (HK), pyruvate kinase(PK), glucose phosphate isomerase(GPI) and lactate dehydrogenase (LD) as four important glycolytic enzymes were markedly stimulated in trematode infected Biomphalaria alexandrina when measured two weeks post exposure to infection with Schistosoma mansoni miracidia. On the other hand phosphoenolpyruvate carboxy kinase (PEPCK), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase) and fructose 1,6 diphosphatase(FDPase) as three gluconeogenic enzymes were

This article discusses the anthelmintics now in common use and describes their mode of action and toxic side effects. The drugs reviewed include: pyrantel pamoate, mebendazole, piperazine, thiabendazole, niclosamide, praziquantel, niridazole, oxamniquine and diethylcarbamazine. Most of the common roundworm intestinal infections respond to treatment with pyrantel pamoate, which has the advantage of single-dose therapy. Trichuriasis requires therapy with mebendazole, while the filariases are treated with diethylcarbamazine. There is no specific therapy for trichinellosis, but its symptoms can be

The detection of severe limb malformations in metamorphosing northern leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) from a Colorado pond in August 2022 prompted questions about the cause(s) and concern over the implications. Northern leopard frogs, which are a Tier 1 Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Colorado, have declined over much of their range in the state, particularly along the Front Range. Although malformations in amphibians have been reported in other parts of the USA, they are rare in Colorado, and the current case represents the most severe hotspot reported in the state for over 70 years. PURPOSE: The influence of two key factors, host length and infection site, on the host-parasite interaction in Ompok bimaculatus (Butter catfish) from Mukutmanipur Dam Lake, were investigated.
METHODS: Present study involved 192 specimens of Ompok bimaculatus with varying body lengths, subjected to diverse statistical analyses. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed for the parasite numbers for three groups (cestode, nematode and trematode). Subsequently, we conducted one-way permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) followed by pairwise test to assess parasite n

Human cercarial dermatitis is a parasitic disease that causes an allergic reaction in the skin (swimmer's itch) as a consequence of contact with cercariae of bird schistosomes present in water, mainly of the genus Trichobilharzia Skrjabin et Zakarow, 1920. The main objective of the study was to confirm the presence of the zoonotic disease agent following reports of human infections in recreational water in Slovakia. We identified two species of freshwater snails at Košice Lake, Radix auricularia (Linnaeus, 1758) and Physa acuta (Draparnaud, 1805). Trematode infections were observed only in R. …

Wildlife conservation law in Costa Rica protects common motmots (Momotus momota), limiting the specimens available to study their health and biology. This report describes the finding of the trematode Circumvitellatrema momota in the trachea, air sacs, lung, and celomatic cavity of two free-living M. momota. Histiocytic air sacculitis and pleuritis with granulomas containing trematodes, as well as adhesions between the air sacs and pericardium, were observed. In addition, histiocytic pneumonia, air sacculitis, celomitis, ulcerative tracheitis, and necrotizing histiocytic hepatitis showing intr

Strigeid trematodes of the genus Apatemon Szidat, 1928 are intestinal parasites of fish-eating birds, utilizing various fish species as second intermediate hosts. In this study, we report morphometrical and molecular characterization of Apatemon sp. metacercariae parasitizing killifish Nothobranchius furzeri (Cyprinodontiformes: Nothobranchiidae) in south-east Mozambique. Metacercariae obtained from the cerebral cavity of killifish and two adult individuals isolated from experimentally infected ducklings were used for detailed morphological and molecular description, both resulting in generic

Human disease agents exist within complex environments that have underappreciated effects on transmission, especially for parasites with multi-host life cycles. We examined the impact of multiple host and parasite species on transmission of the human parasite Schistosoma mansoni in Kenya. We show S. mansoni is impacted by cattle and wild vertebrates because of their role in supporting trematode parasites, the larvae of which have antagonistic interactions with S. mansoni in their shared Biomphalaria vector snails. We discovered the abundant cattle trematode, Calicophoron sukari, fails to devel

Nan Province, located in northern Thailand, is hyperendemic for parasite infections; the helminthic infection rate in 1,010 schoolchildren was 60.0% in 2001. Mass anthelmintic chemotherapy has been conducted with schoolchildren, and selective treatment has been given to people in the community, from 2002. The modified cellophane thick smear method was used to examine the prevalence and intensity of helminth infections in schoolchildren and community people once a year during the period 2002-2004. The prevalence of helminth infections decreased slowly from 60.0 to 40.3% in schoolchildren and fr

Successful programs for ex situ and in situ conservation and management of raptors require detailed knowledge about their pathogens. The purpose of this study was to identify the internal parasites of some captive raptors in Mexico, as well as to verify their impact in the health status of infected birds. Birds of prey were confiscated and kept in captivity at the Centro de Investigación y Conservación de Vida Silvestre (CIVS) in Los Reyes La Paz, Mexico State. For this, fecal and blood samples from 74 birds of prey (66 Falconiformes and eight Strigiformes) of 15 species, juveniles and adults

M esostephanus appendiculatus (Family: Cyathocotylidae) is one of the unique trematodes that complete their cycles in human and animal intestines in many countries of the world. The main source of its transmission is eating raw or undercooked infected fish muscle. Earliest analyses of genes to different parasites supported the analysis of helminthes either biological or morphological. This paper detected M. appendiculatus sequence with GenBank accession number gb (KY026782). Comparison of M. appendiculatus with other helminthes using BioEdit 7 and MEGA7 program shows some similarity in differe

The efficacy of intraruminal albendazole (ABZ) capsules (Proftril-Captec) and the effect of treatment on productivity parameters were studied in two experiments totally on 466 ewes naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes and trematodes D. dendriticum. Ovoscopical tests revealed that treated animals remained negative during 10-12 weeks after the administration of capsules and that pasture contamination with helminths was significantly reduced. Necropsy revealed 96.9-99.2% efficacy against nematodes Nematodirus spp., Oesophagostomum spp., Cooperia spp., Trichostrongylus spp. and Trich

Aquatic environments are often thermally variable, and ectotherms may select thermal habitats based on their physiological state. However, it remains unclear whether immune reactions and sickness behaviours, including behavioural fever or chill, drive temperature preference and what role natural temperature shifts play in thermal choice. We used a shuttle box system to determine temperature preference in wild-caught pumpkinseed sunfish, Lepomis gibbosus, that were: (i) naturally co-infected by parasitic helminths; (ii) experimentally infected with trematodes, or (iii) immune challenged through

The prevalence and intensity of the trematode, Otodistomum hydrolagi, were determined for the first time in Spotted Ratfish, Hydrolagus colliei. Spotted Ratfish specimens were collected during bottom-trawl surveys in Queen Charlotte Sound (QCS, n = 31) and off the west coast of Vancouver Island (WCVI, n = 242). In all instances, the flukes were found within the abdominal cavity. Most flukes were mature (intrauterine eggs were present) and ranged in length from 9.1 to 61.5 mm, with a mean ± SD length of 28.5 ± 12.1 mm (n = 52). Fluke length was positively correlated with Spotted Ratfish precaud
