Far-infrared ray patches relieve pain and improve skin sensitivity in myofascial pain syndrome: A double-blind randomized controlled study.

OBJECTIVE: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a common disorder characterized by muscle pain if myofascial trigger points (MTrP) are stimulated. This study evaluated the effectiveness of far-infrared ray (FIR) patches in reducing the severity of pain in patients with MPS. METHODS: A double-blind, randomized controlled study involving 125 patients with MPS and 201 MTrPs located in the trapezius muscle. A FIR patch was applied to 98 MTrPs for 24h in the intervention group (61 patients) and a placebo patch was applied to 91 MTrPs in the control group (57 patients) at the end. Pain intensity was m…

Dry needling in lateral epicondylitis: a prospective controlled study.

PURPOSE: Lateral epicondylitis (LE), a common disease, especially in middle age, causes decreased productivity and economic losses. The first-line treatment for LE is conservative and consists of topical and oral anti-inflammatory drugs, ice application, and brace use. If the first-line treatment fails, second-line treatment modalities, which are generally invasive, are offered. Second-line therapeutic regimens include saline, corticosteroid, or platelet-rich plasma injections. Dry needling is relatively new. We hypothesized that dry needling would be at least as effective as first-line treatm

[Myofibrosis in childhood. Differential diagnosis in chest pain].

It is emphasised in connection with the differential diagnosis of chest complaints that after excluded the serious and urgent conditions, a searching for painful muscle bundles and trigger points at the characteristic locations in the muscles can explain the origin of the complaints. By finding of myofibrosis, other expensive or invasive diagnostic tests can be omitted and the patient gets rid off his or her claims.

Combination of Fundal Height and Ultrasound to Predict Small for Gestational Age at Birth.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine whether adding longitudinal measures of fundal height (FH) to the standard cross-sectional FH to trigger third trimester ultrasound estimated fetal weight (EFW) would improve small for gestational age (SGA) prediction. STUDY DESIGN: We developed a longitudinal FH calculator in a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of 1,939 nonobese pregnant women who underwent serial FH evaluations at 12 U.S. clinical sites. We evaluated cross-sectional FH measurement ≤ -3 cm at visit 3 (mean: 32.0 ± 1.6 weeks) versus the addition of longitud

Role of imaging in gastric volvulus: stepwise approach in three cases.

In this paper, we present three cases of gastric volvulus who were admitted to our hospital over one year, focusing on the diagnostic process. By comparing the cases, we present diagnostic points and endoscopic findings that should trigger suspicion and lead to a prompt diagnosis by computed tomography, thus enabling surgery at a time before necrosis of the stomach is present. A literature review is also presented.

Effect of Ultrasound-Guided Rhomboid Interfascial Plane Block on Pain Severity, Disability, and Quality of Life in Myofascial Pain Syndrome - A Case Series With One-Year Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a condition characterized by trigger points in the taut bands of skeletal muscles, commonly affecting the trapezius, rhomboid, and supraspinatus muscles. Rhomboid intercostal block (RIB), an interfascial plane block used to assist perioperative analgesia might be a potential treatment option in MPS. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the short and long-term effects of ultrasound-guided RIB in reducing the severity of pain, disability, and improving quality of life in MPS patients with trigger points in the rhomboid muscle. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective stu…

Effects on deep dry needling of the TIBIALIS posterior muscle on plantar pressure distribution: A single-blinded randomized controlled baropodometric trial.

INTRODUCTION: Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) in the tibialis posterior muscle (TP) can create a TP dysfunction, leading to alterations in plantar pressure distribution and foot loading patterns. These alterations can be objectively evaluated through baropodometric analysis. Our hypothesis was that the application of Deep dry needling (DDN) to the TP latent trigger points (LTrPs), may reverse these changes. OBJECTIVE: to investigate whether changes in plantar pressure distribution occur after the application of DDN to the TP in individuals with LTrPs, to identify the specific areas where th…

A Two-Year Retrospective Comparison of Clinical Outcomes Between Open Release and Percutaneous Release of the Trigger Finger.

BACKGROUND: Trigger finger is often found in adults, accompanied by pain, swelling, and limited movement. If conservative treatment fails, surgical release of the A1 pulley will be performed. Percutaneous trigger finger release is a new surgery method with rapid recovery that includes a good outcome, but there is also more reluctance to use this standard technique than open surgery. This article, therefore, presents a comparison of the long-term outcomes of both methods across different factors, similarities, and patient groups. The study hypothesized that the percutaneous trigger finger relea

Approach to Tendinopathies of the Upper Limb: What Works.

Tendinopathies are some of the most common diagnoses treated by hand surgeons. Diagnoses such as trigger digit, de Quervain tenosynovitis, extensor carpi ulnaris tendinitis, and epicondylitis often resolve with nonoperative treatment and/or a single ambulatory procedure. When symptoms persist or worsen after surgery, patients are disappointed and treatment can be challenging. This article reviews practical points in evaluation of such cases, and surgical options that work in revision scenarios.

[Neurological causes for wrist pain].

The most common cause of wrist pain, due to neurological disorder is carpal tunnel syndrome. In aging patients with atrophy of the hand muscles it is to be differentiated from s.c. myelopathic hand, caused by denervation of anterior horn cells in conditions such as cervical spondylosis. The referred pain affiliated with palpable bands and trigger points in the muscles has to be also considered as origin of pain.

Onset of alopecia areata after Epstein-Barr virus infectious mononucleosis.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of alopecia areata (AA) is incompletely known. A positive family history in some points to a genetic predisposition, and discordance of the disease in identical twins suggests environmental triggers exist. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine whether the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a possible environmental trigger for AA. METHODS: We queried the National AA Registry for all patients who self-reported sudden onset of AA with concurrent EBV mononucleosis. RESULTS: Among the 6256 individuals registered between December 2001 and August 2007, 1586 patients reported an e

Evidence of neuroaxonal degeneration in myofascial pain syndrome: a study of neuromuscular jitter by axonal microstimulation.

The mechanism of myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is unclear. Previous reports pointed out that pathogenesis of either referred pain or local twitch response in trigger point of MPS is related to the nerve degeneration and disintegration of motor and sensory nerves in spinal cord. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the evidence of neuromuscular transmission disorders in trigger point muscles of patients with MPS by using stimulated single-fiber electromyography (SFEMG) examination. Twenty-three patients with neck MPS and 16 age-matched controls attended for the present study. The

Cutting Edge: Check Your Mice-A Point Mutation in the Ncr1 Locus Identified in CD45.1 Congenic Mice with Consequences in Mouse Susceptibility to Infection.

B6.SJL-Ptprca Pepcb /Boy (CD45.1) mice have been used in hundreds of congenic competitive transplants, with the presumption that they differ from C57BL/6 mice only at the CD45 locus. In this study, we describe a point mutation in the natural cytotoxicity receptor 1 (Ncr1) locus fortuitously identified in the CD45.1 strain. This point mutation was mapped at the 40th nucleotide of the Ncr1 locus causing a single amino acid mutation from cysteine to arginine at position 14 from the start codon, resulting in loss of NCR1 expression. We found that these mice were more resistant to CMV due to a hype
