Identifying Gaps in Research on Infectious Diseases Among Migrants in Korea: Implications for Future Studies.

BACKGROUND: The public health impact of infectious diseases among migrants is a growing concern. In this study, we aimed to examine Korean studies focused on infectious diseases among the migrant population in South Korea. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for studies published between 2000 and 2024 that reported and provided quantitative data on infectious diseases in migrants in Korea. RESULTS: Five studies met the inclusion criteria, focusing on measles, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and tuberculosis (TB). The seroprevalence among migrants was

[Liver in children with prior intrathoracic tuberculosis during long-term observation period after chemotherapy].

Ultrasonography of the liver and biliary tract revealed both nonspecific (chronic persistent hepatitis) and paraspecific changes in 93.8% of children with local forms of primary tuberculosis in the phase of infiltration, including 17.3% in whom the changes appeared as biliary dyskinesia. Late outcomes indicated that antituberculous chemotherapy had no negative effect on the liver. The ultrasonographic studies detected abnormal changes of the hepatic parenchyma only in 7.8%, mainly in those with chronic persistent hepatitis.

An unusual presentation of miliary tuberculosis with medullary nephrocalcinosis in an infant.

Miliary tuberculosis (MTB) is a rare and potentially fatal manifestation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, resulting from hematogenous dissemination of the primary infection. Although more commonly seen in immunocompromised individuals, infants are also susceptible due to their immature immune systems. We present the case of an 88-day-old female with MTB and extrapulmonary disease involving the liver, spleen, kidneys, and retina. Imaging demonstrated diffuse pulmonary nodules, hepatic and splenic granulomas, and nephrocalcinosis. This case highlights the hallmark radiologic features see

[Renal cell carcinoma secondary to tuberculous nephritis].

The combination of renal tuberculosis and renal cancer is rare. The authors report the case of a patient who was followed for multifocal pulmonary, hepatic and renal tuberculosis. The diagnosis of associated renal tumour was raised in the presence of suggestive radiological images. Tumourectomy was performed after tuberculostatic therapy, and histological examination revealed renal cell carcinoma associated with caseo-follicular tuberculous granulomas. The outcome was favourable after a follow-up of 2 years. The objective of this study is to analyse the pathogenesis, diagnostic features and tr

Spontaneous internal hemorrhage of a giant hepatic hemangioma with infection: a case report and literature review.

Spontaneous internal hemorrhage from a hepatic hemangioma is rare. This case describes a 59-year-old woman who was hospitalized with recurrent cough and fever for 6 months. The doctor thought that she had pneumonia, but other infectious diseases could not be ruled out. Therefore, related tests were performed and strong antibiotics were used, but the symptom of fever was persistent and recurred. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) findings showed a right hepatic giant hemangioma with hemorrhage, while tuberculosis, liver abscess, and immune disease were excluded by the physician. Because the pati

Mycobacterium tuberculosis SIT42 Infection in an Abused Dog in Southern Italy.

A case of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is described in a dead adult male dog in Southern Italy. The carcass was found by the Health Authority in a gypsy encampment. It was admitted to our forensic veterinary medicine unit, with a suspicion of cruelty to the animal. Necropsy showed beating and traumatism signs, and mistreating was confirmed. Gross lesions included multiple nodular hepatic lesions, hemorrhagic enteritis with enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes, body cavity effusions, and an adrenal neoplasm. Bacteriological and molecular analyses were carried out on the liver lesions that en

Bile duct-duodenal fistula caused by AIDS/HIV-associated tuberculosis.

Although infrequent, digestive fistulae in HIV/AIDS patients have been reported throughout the digestive tract from the esophagus to the anus, with predominance of esophageal fistulae. AIDS/HIV-associated opportunistic infections may invade the digestive system and lead to fistula formation. Tuberculosis is the most common infection associated with these esophageal fistulae. We report here one case of bile duct-duodenal fistula in a female AIDS patient with associated abdominal Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection compromising lymph nodes of the hepatic pedicle where the fistula was found. Isoniazid-induced hepatic necrosis and steatosis in rabbits: absence of effect of gender.

Isoniazid, a highly effective drug for the chemoprophylaxis and treatment of tuberculosis, is associated with severe hepatotoxicity in 1-2% of individuals. In a rabbit model of isoniazid-induced hepatotoxicity, we have measured hepatic necrosis (quantitated by elevation of plasma argininosuccinic acid lyase (ASAL) activity), hepatic steatosis (quantitated by elevation of hepatic triglyceride content), and elevation in plasma triglyceride concentration in 15 rabbits. Eight of 15 rabbits were male, and 14 of 15 were rapid acetylators of sulfamethazine. Administration of isoniazid to rabbits resu

Extrahepatic biliary tract tuberculosis: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease that often has a latent period after the initial infection. Tuberculosis most often affects the lungs but it can also affect other parts of the body. Vietnam is in pandemic area of tuberculosis. CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of a 42-year-old male patient admitted to the hospital with a history of progressive jaundice. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 26 × 33 mm tuberculous mass located at the intersection between the cystic duct and the common hepatic duct, leading to dilation of the intrahepatic biliary ducts on both

Clinicopathological correlates in HIV seropositive tuberculosis cases presenting with jaundice after initiating antiretroviral therapy with a structured review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The development of jaundice after initiation of HAART in HIV-TB co-infected patients is a challenging presentation in resource constrained settings, and is often attributed to drug induced liver injury (DILI).Some investigators have described hepatic tuberculosis Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (TB-IRIS) as a cause of liver disease in patients initiating HAART, which could also cause jaundice. CASE PRESENTATIONS: We report the clinical and histopathological features of five HIV-TB co-infected patients presenting with a syndrome of jaundice, tender hepatomegaly, bile ca

[DRESS syndrome or reaction to drugs with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms associated to anti-tuberculosis drugs].

Tuberculosis has increased all over the world. This paper reports the case of a male patient with tuberculous meningitis, spinal tuberculosis (Pott's disease) and severe adverse reactions to antituberculosis drugs. He had skin rash, hepatitis, eosinophilia and fever; all these signs make the diagnosis of DRESS syndrome. This syndrome is caused by a severe hypersensitivity reaction to different drugs. It is usually caused by anticonvulsants, sulfonamides and some antiviral drugs, among other drugs. Anti-tuberculosis drugs can also cause this potentially fatal syndrome. The importance of surveil
