New skin diseases are reported yearly. Some well-known conditions may develop unusual manifestations. Other cutaneous findings are simply rare. While patients with such diseases represent only a small fraction of our practice they are an important subset of our experience. Many of these diseases are treatable, pinpoint the discovery of internal disease, or simply allow for a diagnosis and prognosis to be given to a concerned patient who had previously escaped classification. BACKGROUND: We attempted to determine the prevalence and demographics of domestic violence (DV) among male and female patients in a university emergency department (ED).
METHODS: The validated Index of Spouse Abuse (ISA) was used. Patients aged 18 years or older seen during 28 randomly selected 4-hour shifts were eligible.

An incident involving a human exposure to a newly isolated arenavirus, Sabia virus, in the Yale Arbovirus Research Unit occurred at Yale University on August 8, 1994. A review was conducted of the records of 147 patients above the age of 60 in a 350-bed general university hospital for whom a request for consultations was made over a two-year period by a geriatric psychiatry division in a department of psychiatry. Findings were compared with those obtained by Mainprize and Rodin and by Ruskin. Most referrals in the present study were from internal medicine as they were in the other two studies. In a man aged 29 following thyroidectomy complicated by myxoedema an onychomycotic infection of long duration spread suddenly and fast onto the skin. A serious traffic accident coincided with the insidious onset of myxoedema. The patient was very irregular in taking medicines and continuously on sick pay. Myxoedema worsened and the ringworm progressed into a generalized ichthyosiform--universal mycotic--condition.

We describe pacemaker pauses and pseudohysteresis resulting from sensing of retrograde P waves in a patient with an implanted AV sequential universal pacemaker. Although retrograde P waves are usually followed by a ventricular spike and therefore create the possibility for "endless loop tachycardia," in our patient some retrograde P waves which followed premature ventricular contractions or junctional beats produced pacemaker pauses. The reason for the occurrence of this phenomenon is that the sum of the VA conduction time and the AV delay is shorter than the pacemaker's hardware rate limit. T

Nine hundred and thirty three students of Dacca University were examined: mean haemoglobin levels were 80.5 per cent for men and 70.0 per cent for women. Five hundred and thirty three (57.3%) of the students had single or multiple intestinal parasitic infections, of which Ascaris lumbricoides (366), Entamoeba histolytica (113) and Trichuris trichiura (99) were the commonest. It is suggested that chronic nutritional deficiencies are compounded by these parasites, leading to low weights, and low haemoglobins.

The authors report a series of 400 forceps deliveries practiced between 1 January 1968 and 30 June 1971, in a university hospital unit. Forceps were used in 3.9 percent of deliveries; 76.9 percent of cases were practiced on primaparas. The authors also note the frequency of narrow pelvis (27.2 percent of cases).
