Urinary incontinence (UI) is highly prevalent amongst women around the world. In this review article we explore UI, its consequences and treatment in sub-Saharan Africa, providing specific examples from Uganda and Malawi. There are various surgical methods for the treatment of female urinary stress incontinence. According to the opinion of American Association of Urologists, anterior colpoplasty is supposed to be the least effective for the long-term treatment out of four surgical treatment categories (anterior colpoplasty, suburethral sling, colposuspension, and long-needle sling). BACKGROUND: A 76-year-old female presented to an outside clinic with symptoms of pelvic prolapse; she denied stress urinary incontinence (SUI). The patient had a history of two prior anti-incontinence surgeries. Pelvic examination revealed a grade IV cystocele. No SUI was identified, with or without reduction of the prolapse. Anterior colporrhaphy with cadaveric fascia was performed. Her prolapse symptoms resolved, but she had new-onset severe SUI.
