An overview is presented of serological and virological studies on poliovirus immunization and circulation in the Netherlands, performed between 1979 and 1991. In this period, only three patients with poliomyelitis were notified. All had acquired the infection abroad. The vaccinations in the national immunization programme, using inactivated poliovirus vaccine, build a strong immunity. This can also be seen in age-stratified serological profiles of the Dutch population. In these surveys, persons from the time at which vaccination was offered have neutralizing antibodies. Older persons, especia

INTRODUCTION: Immunization is a fundamental health component preventing an estimated 2.5 million deaths annually. Despite the documented successes of immunization, disparities of vaccine uptake exist in low- and middle-income countries and across their respective communities. This research assessed the barriers related to recall-based vaccination uptake among communities in Kigali city, the capital of Rwanda.
METHODS: A mixed-methods study was implemented on a sample of 210 households and communities across the three districts of the City of Kigali. The quantitative study used a multistage sa

OBJECTIVE: Pregnant people are at increased risk of COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality, and vaccination presents an important strategy for preventing negative outcomes. However, pregnant people were not included in vaccine trials, and there are limited data on COVID-19 vaccines during pregnancy. The objectives of this systematic review were to identify the safety, immunogenicity, effectiveness, and acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination among pregnant people in the United States.
DATA SOURCES: Four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Google Scholar) were used to identify eligible

UNLABELLED: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic affected the entire world and contributed to severe health and economic consequences. A safe and effective vaccine is a tool allowing the pandemic to be controlled. Hence, we aimed to conduct a survey on vaccinations against seasonal influenza and COVID-19 in Poland, Lithuania, and Ukraine. We also evaluated societal attitudes towards influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted the study between December 2020 and May 2021. At the time, the countries subject to the research were between the second and third waves of the COVID-19

BACKGROUND: More than 100 COVID-19 vaccine candidates are in development since the SARS-CoV-2 genetic sequence was published in January 2020. The uptake of a COVID-19 vaccine among children will be instrumental in limiting the spread of the disease as herd immunity may require vaccine coverage of up to 80% of the population. Prior history of pandemic vaccine coverage was as low as 40% among children in the United States during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.
PURPOSE: To investigate predictors associated with global caregivers' intent to vaccinate their children against COVID-19, when the va

Introduction: Barriers to vaccination and the important role of healthcare professionals (HCPs) in influencing immunization decisions made by parents/patients have been well documented. Little information describes challenges that HCPs face in carrying out their role as vaccinators. Methods: We conducted a focus group study asking HCPs to describe their expectations as frontline vaccinators versus the day-to-day reality they faced. Participants described challenges impacting their ability and motivation as vaccinators, and proposed key solutions to the most important challenges. A total of 75 n

BACKGROUND: The human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV vaccine) was introduced into the Danish Childhood Vaccination Programme in 2009. Following a national debate questioning the safety of the vaccine, the coverage decreased from an uptake of >90% for the first dose of the HPV vaccine to an uptake of 52% in girls born in 2003. The aim of this study was to identify changes in determinants for HPV vaccine hesitancy in the period when the debate spiraled and to identify determinants for specific hesitancy towards the HPV vaccine among girls who received the second dose of the measles, mumps and rubel

Since 1997, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative has sponsored regular door-to-door polio immunisation campaigns in northern Nigeria. On 30 July 2015, the country was finally declared poliofree, a hard won success. At various times, polio eradication has been threatened by rumours and community tensions. For example, in 2003, local Imams, traditional leaders and politicians declared a polio campaign boycott, due to the concerns about the safety of the polio vaccine. Although the campaigns resumed in 2004, many parents continued to refuse vaccination because of the persistence of rumours of

INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 vaccines have reduced severe morbidity and mortality from SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, low vaccine confidence slowed widespread vaccine adoption. This analysis investigated the relationship between individual-level trust in public health authorities, vaccine confidence, and COVID-19 vaccination behavior/intentions among Americans from 2020 to 2022. Additionally, we explored the role of vaccination behavioral environments on individual behaviors and intentions.
METHODS: We utilized data from three nationally representative panel surveys conducted at critical junctures

The decline of immunization rates in countries of origin of migrants and refugees, along with risky conditions during the journey to Europe, may threaten migrants' health. We performed a systematic review of the scientific literature in order to assess the frequency of vaccine preventable diseases, and vaccination coverage among migrants and refugees in Europe. To this end, Medline and Cochrane databases were considered. After the screening and the selection process, 58 papers were included in the review. We focused on the following vaccine-preventable diseases: hepatitis B, measles, rubella,

OBJECTIVES: Inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) are rare genetic disorders associated with increased vulnerability to infections and risk of metabolic decompensation. Although routine immunization is recommended, data on real-world vaccination status, seroprotection rates, and vaccine safety in children with IEMs remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate immunization status, antigen-specific seroprotection rates, determinants of seronegativity, and vaccine safety in a cohort of children with IEMs.
METHODS: This single center cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary Pediatric Metabo

In the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-vaccine sentiments have been on the rise, with a recent seminal study on the development of anti-vaccine views in social media even making its way into Nature Communications. Yet, with the current scientific consensus being in overwhelming agreement over the safety and efficacy of vaccines, many scientists lose their grasp on the fears, concerns, and arguments that the opposition may hold. This paper discusses and evaluates vaccine-hesitant individuals on a socioeconomic, historical, and philosophical landscape. It also provides an analysis of common

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy is a growing public health concern and has been classified as a major threat to global health by the World Health Organization. While there has been extensive research on the attitudes of vaccine-hesitant individuals, little is known about provaccination advocates. Our objectives were to describe the characteristics, attitudes, activities and motivations of provaccination advocates.
METHODS: An internet survey was conducted in July-November 2019. US vaccine advocacy groups were invited to partner in survey distribution. Participants were recruited from a convenie
