What do diagnostic test data tell us about differences in the profiles of children diagnosed with reading disability or language impairments?

UNLABELLED: A detailed evaluation of a child's strengths and weaknesses allows for a valid and reliable diagnosis of reading disability for the selection of optimal intervention practices. Using archival data from a clinic that specialized in the diagnosis of reading disabilities, we compared the performance of 60 children diagnosed with specific reading disability (SRD) and 31 children with language impairments and reading disability (LIRD) on measures of cognitive reasoning, verbal ability, phonological manipulation, rapid serial naming, and phonological memory. While the SRD and LIRD groups

Learning from incidents of violence in health care. An investigation of 'case reports' as a basis for staff development and organisational change.

How can health care staff be helped by learning about aggression and violence in health care settings. This is a report of how 'Case Reports' were used as a basis for staff development through educational intervention and organisational change. The project was carried out in two stages. Firstly, 'Case Reports' were collected to document and illuminate the experiences of health care staff, and these reports were used as a basis for teaching and learning. Secondly, opportunities were provided for health care staff to review existing policies and guidelines relevant to aggression and violence in

Effects of modified orthography on the identification of printed words.

Research has shown that instructional methods involving pairing pictures with print interfere with identification of written words. Preliminary evidence, however, indicates that use of modified orthography (where a line drawing is superimposed upon the printed word) may be effective for reading instruction with individuals who have mental retardation. In the present study, we used a single-subject parallel treatments design with 4 adults who had moderate to severe mental retardation. They received reading instruction under two conditions--traditional and modified orthography. Results showed th

Associations Between ADHD Symptom Dimensions and Cognition in Children With ADHD and Learning Difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD) are both associated with attentional and cognitive difficulties. This study examined the extent to which the cognitive impairments could be consequences of elevated levels of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. METHOD: Secondary analysis was conducted on data from four groups selected from the Centre for Attention, Learning, and Memory, a neurodivergent cohort of children aged 5 to 18 years with a mean age of 9 years : children with ADHD only (n = 70), learning difficulties only (n = 40

Botulism and memory.

Although botulinum toxin is thought not to affect the human CNS, previous studies have not examined those behaviors, such as memory, that have been shown to be dependent on central acetylcholine transmission. In eight patients with type A botulism, subjective analysis, bedside memory testing, and formal memory testing with Hebb's verbal sequencing test, Corsi's nonverbal sequencing test, and Buschke's verbal serial list learning test failed to demonstrate impairment in immediate and recent memory. Botulism severe enough to block peripheral nicotinic and muscarinic cholinergic transmission does

Learning in trance: functional brain imaging studies and neuropsychology.

This study examined the fundamental question, whether verbal memory processing in hypnosis and in the waking state is mediated by a common neural system or by distinct cortical areas. Seven right-handed volunteers (25.4 years, sd 3.1) with high-hypnotic susceptibility scores were PET-scanned while encoding/retrieving word associations either in hypnosis or in the waking state. Word-pairs were visually presented and highly imaginable, but not semantically related (e.g. monkey-street). The presentation of pseudo-words served as a reference condition. An emission scan was recorded after each intr

Serial processing and the "phonetic route:" lessons learned in the functional reorganization of deep dyslexia.

A patient with chronic agrammatic Broca's aphasia presented with symptoms of deep dyslexia, in which it is presumed that phonologic processing of the written message is disrupted. Functional reorganization of the "nonlexical" or phonetic route of reading was undertaken according to principles of A. R. Luria, whereby the patient must learn consciously to control behaviors that had formerly been unconscious and automatic. This patient's responses in treatment made it clear that the phonetic route encompasses at least two dissociable functions, grapheme-phoneme conversion and sequential analysis.

A new machine learning model based on induction of rules for autism detection.

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that describes certain challenges associated with communication (verbal and non-verbal), social skills, and repetitive behaviors. Typically, autism spectrum disorder is diagnosed in a clinical environment by licensed specialists using procedures which can be lengthy and cost-ineffective. Therefore, scholars in the medical, psychology, and applied behavioral science fields have in recent decades developed screening methods such as the Autism Spectrum Quotient and Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers for diagnosing autism and other pervas

On the automaticity/cerebellar deficit hypothesis of dyslexia: balancing and continuous rapid naming in dyslexic and ADHD children.

The present study examined the relationship of reading disability (RD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to balancing problems. In the cerebellar deficit hypothesis of dyslexia of Nicolson et al. [Trends Neurosci. 24 (2001) 508], balancing problems are taken as sign of a cerebellar deficit and were found to be associated with dyslexia. Four groups of 10 children each, representing all combinations of RD (absent versus present) and ADHD (absent versus present), were included. However, poor balancing (assessed both singly and together with a secondary task) was not found to be

Assessing the effect of object locations on word learning during naturalistic adult-child interactions.

The aim of this study was to assess previously observed relationships between object locations and early word learning within an ecologically valid design. Adults labeled objects during openly structured interactions with their child. Fine-grained distributions of object locations were determined by a convolutional neural network. However, an analysis of the distributions of these locations during the interactions revealed that none of the spatial variables-the areas, overlap, or distances-were able to significantly predict which corresponding labels were learned by the child. A consequent pow

Orthographic Support for Word Learning in Clinical Populations: A Systematic Review.

Purpose A systematic review was performed to determine the extent to which orthographic facilitation, a strategy to improve word learning, has been demonstrated in the literature for children and adolescents from clinical categories such as developmental language disorders (DLD), autism spectrum disorders (ASD), Down syndrome, dyslexia, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, and cerebral palsy. Method Five databases were searched for all studies published through December 2019. Eligible studies included participants from a clinical population (DLD, ASD, dyslexia, cerebral palsy, Down syn

Stress Assignment Errors in Surface Dyslexia: Evidence from Two Italian Patients with a Selective Deficit of the Orthographic Input Lexicon.

Surface dyslexia designates a selective impairment in reading irregular words, with spared ability to read regular and novel words, following a cerebral damage usually located in the left dominant hemisphere. In Italian language, which is regular at the segmental level, surface dyslexia is characterized by stress assignment errors. Here we report on two cases of Italian surface dyslexic patients who produced stress assignment errors, mainly in reading irregular words. In reading nonwords they usually applied the regular stress pattern. Both patients were also impaired in lexical decision and i

Rapid cortical plasticity underlying novel word learning.

Humans are unique in developing large lexicons as their communication tool. To achieve this, they are able to learn new words rapidly. However, neural bases of this rapid learning, which may be an expression of a more general cognitive mechanism, are not yet understood. To address this, we exposed our subjects to familiar words and novel spoken stimuli in a short passive perceptual learning session and compared automatic brain responses to these items throughout the learning exposure. Initially, we found enhanced activity for known words, indexing the ignition of their underlying memory traces

Equivalence relations in individuals with language limitations and mental retardation.

The study of equivalence relations exhibited by individuals with mental retardation and language limitations holds the promise of providing information of both theoretical and practical significance. We reviewed the equivalence literature with this population, defined in terms of subjects having moderate, severe, or profound mental retardation. The literature includes 55 such individuals, most of whom showed positive outcomes on equivalence tests. The results to date suggest that naming skills are not necessary for positive equivalence test outcomes. Thus far, however, relatively few subjects

The nonword reading deficit in developmental dyslexia: evidence from children learning to read German.

This study examined whether dyslexic children learning to read German show the same nonword reading deficit, which is characteristic of dyslexic children learning to read English (Rack, Olson, & Snowling, 1992), a deficit which is taken as evidence for a phonological impairment underlying dyslexia. Because the German writing system, in contrast to English, exhibits comparatively simple and straightforward grapheme-phoneme correspondences, the generality of the nonword reading deficit across different alphabetic systems seemed questionable. Actually, it was found that 10-year-old dyslexic child

Not all nonwords are alike: implications for reading development and theory.

Three experiments were designed to examine children's and adults' ability to pronounce consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) nonsense words. Some of the nonwords, like tain and goach, shared their VC unit with a number of real words. Other nonwords, like goan and taich, shared their VC unit with few or no real words. Pooling across items, the very same grapheme-phoneme correspondences occurred in the two types of nonwords. First graders, good and poor third grade readers, and adults all performed better on the nonwords with the more common VC units than on the nonwords with the less common VC units.
