The relative virulence of various strains of Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) was studied using the eyes of mice and cattle. The investigation consisted of three separate experiments. Experiments I and II involved a study on the effects of (1) different methods of growth and (2) serial blood agar passaging on the virulence of M. bovis. Experiment III involved a study on the relative virulence of different strains of M. bovis and M. bovis-like organisms. Strains of M. bovis and M. bovis-like organisms varied in their pathogenicity for mice. However, different methods for preparation of exposure cultu…

Duck plague virus (DPV) causes a highly contagious disease in ducks, resulting in substantial economic losses to the poultry industry. The l … ucks. Overall, these findings indicate that the N-terminal region of DPV pUL36 contributes to viral virulence in vivo but is dispensable for viral replication in vitro. The mutant Δ400 represents a safe, immunogenic, and promising live-attenuated vaccine candidate for the prevention and control of duck plague.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sequence type 45 (ST45) was rarely found in China. This study was conducted to trace the transmission and evolution of emerging MRSA ST45 strains in mainland China and explore its virulence. A total of 27 ST45 isolates were included for whole-genome sequencing and genetic characteristic analysis. Epidemiological results showed that MRSA ST45 isolates were often obtained from blood, primarily originated in Guangzhou, and carried diverse virulence and drug resistance genes. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec type IV (SCCmec IV) dominated in …

Acinetobacter baumannii is a nosocomial pathogen responsible for several serious infections, including pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis. The propensity of this bacterium to rapidly acquire antibiotic resistance leads to the emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant A. baumannii strains. As a result, antibiotics are becoming less effective in treating infections caused by this pathogen. In recent years, increasing efforts have focused on developing therapeutic compounds that could reduce the ability of A. baumannii to establish infection by inhibiting the virulence factors and pathogenesis o…

Human and animal cryptococcosis due to an unusual molecular type of Cryptococcus gattii (VGII) emerged recently on Vancouver Island, Canada. Unlike C. neoformans, C. gattii causes disease mainly in immunocompetent hosts, despite producing a similar suite of virulence determinants. To investigate a potential relationship between the regulation of expression of a virulence gene composite and virulence, we took advantage of two subtypes of VGII (a and b), one highly virulent (R265) and one less virulent (R272), that were identified from the Vancouver outbreak. By expression microarray analysis, 2…

We describe here the functions of a Snf1/AMPK homolog in the human pathogenic yeast Cryptococcus neoformans, strain JEC21. We found that JEC21 SNF1 is a key regulator for the biosynthesis of the major virulence factors, stress resistance and alternative carbon source utilization. Disruption of JEC21 SNF1 results in defects of laccase activity and capsule production, sensitivity to cation stress. Especially, we found that JEC21 SNF1 is essential for growth at elevated temperature and for thermotolerance. To our knowledge, a role for Snf1 proteins in thermotolerance has not been reported. Furthe…

This study classifies Bartonella species based on virulence factors and explores the genomic characteristics of Bartonella isolates from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to understand their ecological adaptations. PCR detection and isolation culture of Bartonella were performed on 50 captured pikas in their habitats on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The Qinghai-Tibet isolates were identified through gltA and rpoB phylogenetic analysis, ANI analysis, and single-copy homologous gene phylogeny. Reference genomes of Bartonella species were analyzed for virulence classification via pan-genome and virulence fa…

Cholera toxin (CT) and toxin coregulated pilus (TCP, TcpA is the major subunit) are two major virulence factors of Vibrio cholerae, both of which play critical roles in developing severe diarrhea in human. Expression of CT and TCP is under the tight control of the regulatory cascade known as the ToxR virulence regulon, which is composed of three regulators ToxR, TcpP, and ToxT. Besides, their expression is also regulated by the quorum sensing (QS) master regulator HapR and the regulatory protein Fur. Though transcription of tcpP, toxT, and/or tcpA are reported to be regulated by HapR and Fur, …

African swine fever virus (ASFV) is the etiological agent of an often lethal disease of domestic pigs, African swine fever (ASF). The ASFV Georgia 2007 isolate (ASFV-G) is responsible for the current epidemic situation in Europe and Asia. Genetically modified ASFVs containing deletions of virulence-associated genes have produced attenuated phenotypes and induced protective immunity in swine. Here we describe the differential behavior of two viral genes, NL (DP71L) and UK (DP96R), both originally described as being involved in virus virulence. Deletion of either of these genes efficiently atten…

Base on the sequence of S genes, which encode spike proteins, we previously identified three different types (North American, S INDEL, and S large-DEL types) of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) that have re-emerged in Japan since 2013. Based on experimental infections with the North American and S large-DEL types, we also hypothesized that PEDV virulence may be linked to the S1 subunit of the S protein. To test this hypothesis, we have now assayed in gnotobiotic piglets various recombinant PEDVs generated by reverse genetics. Piglets inoculated with CV777 maintained in National Institute…
