Causal relationship between B vitamins and neuropsychiatric disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in how diet and nutrition influence both physical and mental health. Numerous studies have highlighted the potential role of B vitamins in neuropsychiatric disorders (NPDs), yet the exact causal relationship between these nutrients and NPDs remains unclear. In our Mendelian randomization (MR) meta-analysis, we examined the links between B vitamins (VB6, VB12, and folate) and NPDs, utilizing data from previous MR studies, the UK Biobank, and FinnGen databases. Our MR analysis revealed a complex, multifaceted association: VB6 appears to protect aga

"Exploring benefits of L-carnitine in hemodialysis: promising findings await clinical application".

L-carnitine, a crucial component in the metabolism of fatty acids, has shown promise as a treatment for malnutrition and cardiovascular disease in hemodialysis patients. The 2025 meta-analysis by Nabi et al., which documented a statistically significant improvement in left-ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) after L-carnitine supplementation, is the focus of this letter's evaluation of previous data. Although there has been a noticeable increase in systolic performance, there are still conflicting data on diastolic function and left-ventricular mass index (LVMI). Furthermore, it is becoming m

Biotin Supplementation-The Cause of Hypersensitivity and Significant Interference in Allergy Diagnostics.

Biotin (vitamin B7) is a common, naturally occurring water-soluble vitamin. It belongs to the broad group of B vitamins. It is a common ingredient in dietary supplements, cosmetics, medicines, and parapharmaceutical preparations administered orally or applied topically (to the skin, hair, nails). The problem of the relationship between vitamin B supplementation and sensitivity seems to be multi-threaded. There is little literature data that would confirm that oral vitamin B supplementation or local exposure to biotin is a significant sensitizing factor. Moreover, it seems that allergy to vitam

The adverse effects of oral niacin/nicotinamide - an overview of reviews.

Nicotinamide(NAM) and niacin are forms of vitamin B3 commonly utilised as health supplements. Recent studies highlight its potential effects in glaucoma, leading to increasing use by patients. However, there are no studies on the adverse effects (AEs) of nicotinamide or niacin use in ophthalmology. We examined the incidence of clinically important AEs of oral NAM/niacin in humans and subsequent management strategies. A systematic search of reviews or meta-analyses was undertaken using pre-defined search criteria on PubMed with inclusion were agreed on by two independent researchers. Risk of bi

Pregnancy-induced alterations of 1-carbon metabolism and significance for maternal nutrition requirements.

OBJECTIVES: The pregnancy-induced alterations in 1-carbon (1C) metabolism, effects of advancing gestation on maternal plasma concentrations of methyl nutrients, and potential implications for maternal dietary intake and infant clinical outcomes are summarized in this narrative review. BACKGROUND: 1C metabolism encompasses a series of pathways where 1C units are transferred among nutrients such as B vitamins, choline, and amino acids (the methyl nutrients). Use of isotopic tracers and measuring methyl nutrients in maternal plasma and infant cord blood has advanced the understanding of 1C flux

Supplemental Vitamins and Minerals for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Treatment: JACC Focus Seminar.

This is an update of the previous 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis of vitamin and mineral supplementation on cardiovascular disease outcomes and all-cause mortality. New randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses were identified by searching the Cochrane library, Medline, and Embase, and data were analyzed using random effects models and classified by the Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluation approach. This updated review shows similar findings to the previous report for preventive benefits from both folic acid and B vitamins for stroke and has been grade

ABC's of Vitamin Supplementation in Critical Illness.

Critical illness commonly presents as a systemic inflammatory process. Through this inflammation, there is an enhanced production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species combined with marked reductions in protective plasma antioxidant concentrations. This imbalance is referred to as oxidative stress and is commonly encountered in numerous disease states in the critically ill including sepsis, trauma, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and burns. Oxidative stress can lead to cellular, tissue and organ damage as well as increased morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Supplementat

Nicotinamide: An Update and Review of Safety & Differences from Niacin.

Nicotinamide (or niacinamide), a form of vitamin B3 that is often confused with its precursor nicotinic acid (or niacin), is a low-cost, evidence-based oral treatment option for actinic keratosis, squamous cell carcinomas, basal cell carcinomas, and bullous pemphigoid. Despite its favorable safety profile and affordability, the integration of nicotinamide into clinical practice is an ongoing process, and like many over-the-counter supplements it has faced some barriers. The purpose of this article is to address some of those barriers by reviewing its efficacy, safety profile, and emphasizing t

The efficacy and safety of inositol supplementation in preterm infants to prevent retinopathy of prematurity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Inositol supplementation has been linked to beneficial effects on reducing the incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP); however, it's controversial. The meta-analysis aimed to check out the efficacy and safety of inositol supplementation in preterm infants for preventing ROP. METHODS: We conducted searches through PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ClinicalTrials.gov website and conference proceedings. Randomized controlled trials comparing inositol supplementation with placebo were included. Two

[The use of neurobion in neurological practice].

Vitamins are actively involved in many metabolic processes of the nervous system. Their deficit may cause severe and, sometimes, irreversible consequences. Mechanisms of the therapeutic effects of the vitamin B complex neurobion are considered. Results of the studies on the efficacy and safety of neurobion in patients with polyneuropathies, including those caused by diabetes mellitus, pain syndromes of origin (skeletal/muscle pain, trauma etc) are presented. The necessity of using neurobion in treatment of a wide spectrum of nervous system diseases is emphasized.

Thiamine and spinocerebellar ataxia type 2.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 is a genetic disorder characterised by the degeneration of the cerebellum, its connections and degeneration in brainstem areas. Some observations indicate that high doses of thiamine may lead to the partial regression of the symptoms. One patient was under rehabilitative treatment from June 2011 to July 2012. We assessed the level of fatigue using the Fatigue Severity Scale. We performed the Scale for Assessment and Rating of Ataxia and Robertson Profile for Dysarthria (Italian version). Thiamine and thiamine pyrophosphate levels in the blood were within the healt

Presumed primary thiamine deficiency in a young African lion (Panthera leo).

A 1-yr-old intact male African lion (Panthera leo) fed only beef muscle meat was evaluated for episodes of hypermetric ataxia, generalized weakness and tonic-clonic front limb movements. A hemogram, biochemical profile, blood lead, electrocardiogram, survey radiographs, and brain computed tomography were normal. Cerebral spinal fluid analyses suggested mild inflammation. Acetylcholine receptor antibody and serologic tests for all infectious agents tested were negative. Clinical signs resolved completely 9 days after instituting oral thiamine (3 mg/kg/day) and a completely nutritional diet. Thi
