Cross-innervation of the thyroarytenoid muscle by a branch from the external division of the superior laryngeal nerve.

The neuroanatomy of the larynx was explored in seven dogs to assess whether there is motor innervation to the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle from the external division of the superior laryngeal nerve (ExSLN). In 3 animals, such innervation was identified. Electrical stimulation of microelectrodes applied to the ExSLN resulted in contraction of the TA muscle, indicating that this nerve is motor in function. This was confirmed by electromyographic recordings from the TA muscle. Videolaryngostroboscopy revealed improvement in vocal fold vibration following stimulation of the ExSLN compared to without

The parabrachial region as a possible region modulating simultaneously pain and tonic immobility.

Unilateral microinjection of carbachol (1 microgram) into the dorsal parabrachial region (PBR) of conscious guinea pigs produced a 100% increase in the duration of restraint-induced tonic immobility (TI) episodes. In another group of animals with a subcutaneous electrode introduced into the thigh region, microinjections of equivalent doses of the same drug in similar sites also significantly reduced the motor defense and vocalization responses elicited by the application of a noxious electrical stimulus to the skin. Both effects were blocked by pretreatment with atropine. The possible simultan

Estimating the minimum numbers of calling mysticetes using passive acoustic bearings.

Monitoring the abundance and distribution of marine mammals is essential for evaluating human and environmental effects. Passive acoustic monitoring offers a non-visual alternative, but estimating animal numbers remains difficult. We introduce Spatial Counting of Animal Numbers (SCAN), a method that counts unique bearings of detected calls to estimate a conservative minimum number of animals present. SCAN is a complementary metric to traditional presence/absence results and calibrated density estimates. The method is demonstrated using sei whale calls recorded by a four-element array on an aut

Behavioural variables influence contact call rate more than characteristics of the vegetation in a group-living passerine species.

Although the contact calls of birds have been studied for their acoustic properties, limited research has investigated their repetitive nature. The rate of contact calls could be related to movement, with recruiting birds signalling their location, or it could help maintaining spacing between group mates, or give information about the environment where both signaller and receiver are located. If maintaining spacing, higher call rates would be expected in denser vegetation; alternatively, if birds gain information about predation risk from the cessation of contact calling, then open areas might

Diving apart together: call propagation in diving long-finned pilot whales.

Group-living animals must communicate to stay in contact. In long-finned pilot whales, there is a trade-off between the benefits of foraging individually at depth and the formation of tight social groups at the surface. Using theoretical modelling and empirical data of tagged pairs within a group, we examined the potential of pilot whale social calls to reach dispersed group members during foraging periods. Both theoretical predictions and empirical data of tag pairs showed a potential for communication between diving and non-diving group members over separation distances up to 385 m (empirica

The Arylabialis Muscle of the Túngara Frog (Engystomops pustulosus).

The current functional model of the anuran larynx includes four pairs of laryngeal muscles. Their contractions do not account, however, for the behavioral control of call complexity observed in male túngara frogs (Engystomops pustulosus), which optionally add a secondary note with distinct harmonic structure to their advertisement call. Examination of the túngara frog's laryngeal morphology through dissection and resin histology has revealed that the m. dilatator laryngis is divided into two separate bundles (superficial and deep). The superficial bundle closely matches the typical description

Remarkably loud snaps during mouth-fighting by a sponge-dwelling worm.

Many aquatic animals, including mammals, fishes, crustaceans and insects, produce loud sounds underwater [1-6]. Soft-bodied worms would seem unlikely to produce a loud snap or pop because such brief, intense sounds normally require extreme movements and sophisticated energy storage and release mechanisms [5]. Surprisingly, we discovered a segmented marine worm that makes loud popping sounds during a highly stereotyped intraspecific agonistic behavior we call 'mouth fighting'. These sounds - sound pressures up to 157 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m, with frequencies in the 1-100 kHz range and a strong signa

Timing vocal behavior: lack of temporal overlap avoidance to fluctuating noise levels in singing Eurasian wrens.

Many animals live in or near urban areas that have become increasingly widespread and noisy over the last century. Especially those species that rely heavily on acoustics for communication may be affected by these elevated anthropogenic noise levels. Many bird species that sing to defend their territories and to attract mates may have to exploit specific noise coping strategies to persist in such acoustically challenging conditions. Eurasian wrens (Troglodytes troglodytes), like several other bird species, have been shown in a previous experiment to time their vocalizations such that they avoi

Lasting benefits of embryonic eavesdropping on parent-parent communication.

Developing embryos have traditionally been viewed as passive agents in the evolution of family conflicts, with maternal substances within the uterus or eggs as main factors modulating later expression of offspring solicitation behaviors. Yet, parent-offspring conflict theory predicts that offspring might also rely on alternative cues to adjust demand in response to prenatal cues of parental capacity for resource provisioning. Here, we show how embryonic experience with vocalizations carried out by parents during nest-relief displays at incubation adaptively shapes avian offspring development,

Concatenation of 'alert' and 'identity' segments in dingoes' alarm calls.

Multicomponent signals can be formed by the uninterrupted concatenation of multiple call types. One such signal is found in dingoes, Canis familiaris dingo. This stereotyped, multicomponent 'bark-howl' vocalisation is formed by the concatenation of a noisy bark segment and a tonal howl segment. Both segments are structurally similar to bark and howl vocalisations produced independently in other contexts (e.g. intra- and inter-pack communication). Bark-howls are mainly uttered in response to human presence and were hypothesized to serve as alarm calls. We investigated the function of bark-howls

Clinical Efficacy Analysis of Unilateral Modified Arytenoidectomy for Bilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

PURPOSE: To explore the clinical efficacy of unilateral modified arytenoidectomy (UMA) in the treatment of bilateral vocal fold paralysis(BVFP) based on animal models. METHODS: The UMA which had been tested in excised canine larynges with simulated BVFP was adapted into a clinical technique. The characteristics of this surgical technique involve contouring of the arytenoid cartilage. The procedure expands the vocal fold respiratory region and subglottic space of the arytenoid cartilage while preserving the muscular process to maintain partial vocal fold muscle function. A retrospective analys

Vocal fold lateralization by percutaneous suture in children: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Percutaneous vocal fold lateralization (PVFL) consists of external fixation with non-absorbable percutaneous suture of the vocal fold in a lateral position, under direct glottic visualization. The objective, through a systematic review, was to identify, select, evaluate, and synthesize the relevant evidence available to define whether PVFL is effective in avoiding the tracheostomy, as well as whether it is effective in allowing decannulation of children who have already been tracheostomized. Secondarily, vocal quality, complications and reversibility of the procedure were evaluated

Pathophysiology of Fibrosis in the Vocal Fold: Current Research, Future Treatment Strategies, and Obstacles to Restoring Vocal Fold Pliability.

Communication by voice depends on symmetrical vibrations within the vocal folds (VFs) and is indispensable for various occupations. VF scarring is one of the main reasons for permanent dysphonia and results from injury to the unique layered structure of the VFs. The increased collagen and decreased hyaluronic acid within VF scars lead to a loss of pliability of the VFs and significantly decreases their capacity to vibrate. As there is currently no definitive treatment for VF scarring, regenerative medicine and tissue engineering have become increasingly important research areas within otolaryn

Effect of asymmetric vocal fold stiffness on traveling wave velocity in the canine larynx.

The vocal fold (VF) traveling wave is essential to normal voice production. The present investigation describes a new method to determine traveling wave velocity (TWV) in the in vivo canine phonatory model. This method synchronizes photoglottographic and electroglottographic waveforms with videostroboscopic images to determine the duration of time the traveling wave moves between two tattoos placed a known distance apart between the upper and lower margins of each VF. Using this method, we compared the TWV of a paralyzed VF with the TWV of the contralateral, electrically stimulated VF during p

Postnatal development and form-function relationships of the vocal folds in California mice (Peromyscus californicus).

Most mammals produce vocal signals through vocal fold oscillations in the larynx, driven by airflow. Common species used as models (e.g., house mice, rats, and rabbits) may not reflect the cellular specializations or developmental adaptations needed to support diverse vocal strategies or tissue repair under the mechanical stresses of phonation in humans. This study investigates vocal fold structure and function in California mice (Peromyscus californicus) to inform a new model of vocal fold biomechanics. These mice can produce extremely high fundamental frequencies (f0) via airflow-induced voc

Vocal fold medialization using autologous cartilage in a canine model: a preliminary study.

Unilateral vocal fold paralysis can alter phonation. Medialization of the vocal fold using cartilage augmentation dates to the early 1950s. Improved phonation after cartilage chordal augmentation has been reported, but no study has as yet documented cartilage viability or size in this setting over time. The authors of this study evaluated thyroid alar cartilage as a medializing material in three mongrel dogs. Grafts were inserted lateral to the inner thyroid perichondrium at the vocal fold level via a window in the thyroid cartilage. Changes in weight, size, and volume were assessed 6 months a
