The Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) and the MELD (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) scores were designed to predict the outcome of decompressive therapy for portal hypertension. They were prospectively validated to predict mortality risk in patients with a wide spectrum of liver disease etiology and severity. Heart transplant has become an increasingly important option for patients with end-stage nonobstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC). However, clinical details related specifically to the overall HC transplant experience remain sparse. We assessed outcomes of HC heart transplants, from 2002 to 2016, at Tufts Medical Center. BACKGROUND: Our management of patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (iPAH) awaiting lung transplantation changed in 2006 with the introduction of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) as an option to bridge these patients to transplantation (BTT).
METHODS: To study the effect of this change on waiting list mortality and post-transplant outcome, 21 consecutive iPAH patients listed for lung transplantation between January 2006 and September 2010 (second cohort) were compared with 23 consecutive iPAH patients listed between January 1997 and December 2005 (first cohort).

The demand for OLT continues to be on the rise with patients spending a long time on the waiting list; this not only increases the risk of developing further decompensation but also mortality. The complications discussed above may not only lead to removal from the waiting list in some cases but also a poorer outcome following transplantation. Therefore the appropriate prevention, recognition and treatment of the above-mentioned complications of cirrhosis will have a positive impact on the outcome before and after liver transplantation.

Survival for children on the waiting list has improved significantly over time in Sweden and the Nordic countries, despite an increase in waiting list duration over time. Approximately 40% of hearts used for pediatric heart transplantation in Sweden come from donors in other Nordic countries. Outcomes following pediatric heart transplantation in Sweden and the Nordic countries are comparable to much larger regions and registries, despite a low number of yearly transplants in the region.

OBJECTIVES: In Spain, official information on waiting times for surgery is based on the interval between the indication for surgery and its performance. We aimed to estimate total waiting times for surgical procedures, including outpatient visits and diagnostic tests prior to surgery. In addition, we propose an alternative system to manage total waiting times that reduces variability and maximum waiting times without increasing the use of health care resources. This system is illustrated by three surgical procedures: cholecystectomy, carpal tunnel release and inguinal/femoral hernia repair.
