Many waste materials have been evaluated for their efficacy in removing different classes of contaminants from water and wastewater in order to improve the cost-effectiveness of adsorption. In the present study, pistachio green hull wastes were investigated as a potential adsorbent for the removal of cyanide from a synthetic wastewater. The effects of a selection of the most significant parameters (pH, adsorbent dose, cyanide concentration and contact time) were initially evaluated based on the percentage of cyanide removed from the wastewater. At an optimum pH of 10, over 99% removal of 100 m

Flow-through column tests were conducted to investigate the performance of iron wall remediation systems for the degradation of aqueous-phase trichloroethylene (TCE). Concentration profiles under steady-state transport conditions were generated by measuring TCE concentrations at sample ports located at various locations along the length of the column. The results indicated that a pseudo-first-order model is adequate at describing degradation kinetics for low initial TCE concentrations, but not for higher initial concentrations. The deviation from pseudo-first-order kinetics can be explained by

A version of the orthophthaldialdehyde-fluorescence ammonium determination for flow injection analysis (FIA) is presented here, with a view to its use for in situ, low-power consumption systems. Thus, the reaction temperature was limited to 30 degrees C and FIA was used in stop-flow mode (3 min stop). The calibration is linear up to 50 mumol l-1, but concentrations up to 100 mumol l-1 can be measured. Repeatability is around 1% in the range of 0.5-4 mumol l-1 and the detection limit is about 0.03 mumol l-1. Over the salinity range of 5-35 (seawater practical salinity scale) the salt effect is

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with high water permeance, superior emerging pollutant (EP) retention, and selective mineral salt passage are highly desirable for high-quality drinking water treatment, yet challenging due to the selectivity-permeance trade-off. Herein, a polyamide-based NF membrane was engineered via a complementary interface strategy involving (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (CD) doping and secondary sulfonamidation with sulfuryl chloride (SC). The resulting CD-PA-SC membrane exhibited excellent water permeance (26.9 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, 3.5- and 2.4-fold higher than NF 90 and NF

Taste-and-odor episodes caused by 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) remain a persistent challenge for drinking water utilities because effective removal must be achieved at trace concentrations under complex natural organic matter interference. Here, a rationally designed hydrophobic metal organic framework (MOF) adsorbent, MIL-53(Al)@C14, is developed to enable rapid and selective capture of 2-MIB far beyond the performance of conventional powdered activated carbon. A targeted hydrophobic surface modification using long-chain phosphonic acid was introduced, converting MIL-53(Al) into MIL-53(Al)@C14

With the increasingly serious water pollution, effectively removing heavy metal ions and drug residues from wastewater has become a key issue in environmental protection. A 3D network Fe-MIL/magnetic P-doped biochar material (Fe-MIL/Fe-PBC) has been constructed through the strategies of simultaneous heteroatom doping and morphology modulation, magnetization modification, charge modulation and confined recombination to achieve the co-adsorption of drug residues and anionic heavy metals within the pH range of 3-12. Therefore, in real water samples (pH 6-9), Fe-MIL/Fe-PBC can achieve good co-adso

Efficiently treating complex water matrices containing multiple micropollutants remains a major challenge in advanced water purification. Here, we developed a carbon nanotube-nickel Janus reaction-zone membrane (JRM) via chemical vapor deposition to enable sequential activation of nonradical pathways by spatially separated reaction zones. Sequential utilization of 1O2 in the Ni-layer reaction zone and direct electron transfer (DET) in the CNT-layer reaction zone was achieved for the selective and efficient degradation of multiple micropollutants. The JRM/PMS catalytic filtration system exhibit…

The transition toward energy-neutral and resource-efficient wastewater management is a central pillar of the 2024 EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. This study evaluates the multi-year performance of the Natural Treatment System for Wastewater (NTSW): a decentralized technology utilizing a multi-stage purification process with compost, denitrification, phosphorus-elimination, and active carbon beds. Three full-scale installations (one household and two school-based systems) were evaluated, encompassing 2.5 years of continuous water quality monitoring and a 4-year assessment of compost ac

The selective removal of fluoride (F-) from water is of great necessity because excessive F- in water can cause symptoms such as skeletal fluorosis and nerve damage, which poses a serious threat to human health. Cerium hydroxide (Ce(OH)3) nanoadsorbents offer a promising strategy for F- removal, which have limits such as aging-induced phase transition, easy deactivation, and aggregation. This study reports a cerium-loaded carbon nanotube (CNTs) composite (Ce@C10/80/150) to overcome the intrinsic defects and enhance the selective adsorption capacity for F- removal from water. Ce@C10/80/150 was

Ensuring the supply of safe and high-quality drinking water can be compromised by the presence of chironomid larvae in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs), which may contaminate municipal water systems through freshwater resources. Chironomids are dominant species known for their resilience to a broad range of extreme aquatic environments. This study aimed to identify the morphological characteristics and obtain genetic information of the chironomid Paratanytarsus grimmii found in the water intake source and freshwater resource of DWTPs in Korea, highlighting the potential possibility of a

To cope with the environmental risks posed by pharmaceutical waste, adsorption is considered a viable option due to its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. This review explores the opportunities and challenges involved in applying nanomaterial-based adsorbents in their metallic, non-metallic, and hybrid forms for removal of common pharmaceuticals (e.g., antibiotics, beta-blockers, analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, endocrine disrupters, and anticancer drugs) from water. To improve the selectivity and scalability of diverse adsorbents against such targets, the adsor

Ozone (O3) is effective for degrading persistent organic pollutants in wastewater but its efficiency is limited by poor O3 gas/liquid mass transfer (kLa) and low O3 utilization efficiency (typically 30 %-64 % in bubble columns). This review critically evaluates strategies to intensify O3 mass transfer and enhance pollutant degradation. The kLa and energy consumption in different commonly used ozone contactors was compared, highlighting the importance of developing enhancement methods. Based on this, four types of techniques (i.e. applying physical fields, implementing membrane technology, util

This study investigates the efficacy of metal-modified biochar (metal char) as biofilter amendments for the removal of six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in stormwater runoff. The metal identity (i.e., Zn, Al, and Fe) and production conditions substantially influenced the performance of metal char, with Zn Char exhibiting a greater surface area (586.28 m2 g-1), smaller pore size (3.44 nm), higher metal content (5.53 % w/w), and highest affinity toward PFAS compared to Al and Fe Char. Zn Char's enhanced PFAS removal was attributed to the synergistic effects of increased surface area

Floating photocatalysis is a real "zero energy consumption" and practicable green water treatment technology because of no need for reactor and pump, and direct contact with sunlight to produce more free radicals compared to traditional immersion photocatalysts. To realize "green" and "safe" practical application, efficiency for different water quality bodies and toxicity assessment of degradation products are key factors. In this work, an economic and efficient floating photocatalyst Bi doped P25-TiO2 (Bi@P25)/expanded perlite (EP), named BTEP was successfully constructed, exhibiting stronger

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are formed from a wide range of dissolved organic matter (DOM) precursors during water chlorination. Since the molecular characteristics of DBPs are complex and understudied, this study proposes a novel method to investigate DBP precursors by partially removing DOM using different dosages of styrene-divinyl benzene polymer (PPL) sorbent. Nontargeted screening analysis revealed that increasing PPL doses reduced the intensity of DOM features, resulting in differences in the intensity of the remaining precursors. Following chlorination, the remaining precursors reac

Aqueous contamination by arsenic and antimony has become a significant concern due to its prevalence in smelting activities. Nowadays, adsorption stands out as an effective method for the removal of these heavy metal ions from water, particularly when the goal is to achieve high levels of purification and ensure safety. However, the complex nature of smelting wastewater often leads to a decrease in the selectivity and salt resistance of adsorbents under industrial conditions. In this study, we introduce a novel designated composite-resin material (KYE003), which is tailored for the deep purifi

Nitrate pollution in groundwater is a serious problem worldwide, as its concentration in many areas exceeds the WHO-defined drinking water standard (50 mg/L). Hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) are a group of microorganisms capable of producing single-cell protein (SCP) using hydrogen and oxygen. Furthermore, HOB can utilize various nitrogen sources, including nitrate. This study developed a novel hybrid biological-inorganic (HBI) system that coupled a new submersible water electrolysis system driven by renewable electricity with HOB fermentation for in-situ nitrate recovery from polluted groun
