Historical analysis (2000-2005) of the coastal water quality in San Andrés Island, SeaFlower Biosphere Reserve, Caribbean Colombia.

To understand the coastal water quality of San Andrès Island, and provide tools for the management of its marine resources, we present the historical analysis of the island monitoring, which includes ammonia, nitrites, nitrate, phosphates, fecal and total coliforms. The anthropogenic pressure on the coastal system is heavy, with water nutrification, posing at risk seagrass and coral ecosystems. During dry season, biologically available nitrogen is 3-9 times higher than the maximum recommended for coral reefs, while during wet season values are 2-6.4 times the maximum. Biologically available ph…

Runoff water quality from broiler litter-amended tall fescue in response to natural precipitation in the Ozark Highlands.

The Arkansas poultry industry produced more than 1.2 billion broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) and generated approximately 1.3 million Mg of broiler litter in 2002. High transportation costs of relocating broiler litter have led to annual land applications near poultry houses, increasing concern for potential surface water contamination from runoff. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of broiler litter application rate on runoff water quality in response to natural precipitation. Six plots (1.5 by 6.0 m), located on a Captina silt loam (finesilty, siliceous, active…

Reticulo-ruminal motility in cattle (Bos indicus) and water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) fed a low quality roughage diet.

1. The effect of A and B sequence contractions of the reticulo-rumen on passage rate of digesta was compared in buffaloes and cattle fed low quality rhodes grass. 2. Both species ate the same amount per unit body weight but buffaloes spent 53% more time ruminating than cattle. 3. Buffaloes had fewer A and B sequence contractions each day and the rate of these contractions during eating, ruminating and at rest were slower. 4. A larger pool of fine feed particles in the rumen of buffaloes, generated by extra ruminating activity was associated with the 30% shorter mean residence time of particula

Insights Into the Mechanism of Water Migration During Freeze-Thaw Cycles on the Quality Deterioration of Frozen Dough Steamed Buns.

To elucidate the mechanism of water migration in frozen dough steamed buns under varying numbers of freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8), this study explored the correlation between water migration and quality deterioration. With increasing FTCs, the ordered protein structure was disrupted, and the gelatinization enthalpy of the frozen dough steamed buns decreased. Meanwhile, depolymerization of the protein intact structure occurred. The proportion of α-helices decreased significantly from 22.95% to 12.14% (p < 0.05). The proportion of β-turns decreased significantly from 34.83% to 33

A course-based research experience in environmental water quality in a graduate course: comparing flipped and non-flipped formats.

Course-based research experiences (CREs) integrate authentic research into coursework. While the benefits of CREs are well documented at the undergraduate level, less is known about their impact at the graduate level. This study examined a CRE embedded in a graduate course offered in flipped and non-flipped formats. Through the CRE, students developed and applied environmental water quality research skills while investigating runoff contributions of antibiotic-resistant bacteria to the Santa Monica Bay, California, USA. The CRE was assessed using a pre-post survey (N = 23) containing objective…

eDNA-based assessment of microbial dynamics in response to persistent contaminants and degraded water quality in a hypereutrophic urban reservoir.

Urban freshwater ecosystems are increasingly exposed to mixtures of pollutants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, their ecological effects remain poorly understood, especially in tropical regions with limited sanitation infrastructure. This study investigated PFAS contamination, water quality, and microbial community structure in Pampulha Lake, a tropical urban reservoir in southeastern Brazil. Spatiotemporal patterns in prokaryotic and eukaryotic diversity were assessed over a year (2022-2023) using environmental DNA metabarcoding of 16S and 18S rRNA genes by inte…

Use of acoustic stimulus to determine behavioral changes in zebrafish after Cd exposure in a water quality warning system.

Behavioral changes in zebrafish are an effective early warning system to determine water quality. However, only a few studies have examined the response of zebrafish to non-chemical stimulus after exposure to a contaminant. Therefore, this study investigated the differences in the behavioral responses of zebrafish to acoustic stimuli before and after exposure to cadmium (Cd). Acoustic escape response sensitivity curves were obtained and analyzed, followed by the determination of sensitive stimulus conditions at 100 Hz and 97 dB with a duration of 30 s and an interval of 30 min. Zebrafish exhib…

The association of deficiencies of water-soluble vitamin intake with health-related quality of life and prognosis in patients with heart failure.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether deficiencies of water-soluble vitamin intake predicted health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and the composite end point of all-cause mortality or cardiac- or heart failure (HF)-related hospitalization in HF patients. Patients with HF may be at risk for inadequate consumption of water-soluble vitamins due to poor appetite and dietary sodium restriction. Because water-soluble vitamins are important in metabolic processes, inadequate dietary intake of these vitamins may negatively affect health outcomes. METHODS: We consecutively recr

Response of water quality to land use in hydrologic response unit and riparian buffer along the Dan River, China.

Land uses determine water quality within riparian environments to a certain extent and directly affect human health via drinking water. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the influences of land use, both in hydrologic response units (HRUs) and 200-m-wide buffer areas, on surface water quality. The variations and interrelationships between water physicochemical properties and land uses were assessed for better management of water environment. Nitrogen was the dominant nutrient and was significantly correlated with other water quality parameters. In the HRUs and buffer areas, the…

Synergistic effects of quenching agents and pH on the stability of regulated and unregulated disinfection by-products for drinking water quality monitoring.

Quenching agents (QAs) are widely used in order to prevent the additional formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the sample holding time. In addition, DBP levels are usually stabilized by adjusting the pH of water samples. Previous studies have mostly focused on the individual effects of QAs or of pH on the stability of DBPs in water samples. Considering that disinfectant quenching and pH adjustments are applied simultaneously during routine analyses, it is more appropriate to evaluate the stability of DBPs with all the chemicals (e.g., disinfectants, QAs, buffers) present in the

Integrating bacterial and viral water quality assessment to predict swimming-associated illness at a freshwater beach: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Recreational waters impacted by fecal contamination have been linked to gastrointestinal illness in swimmer populations. To date, few epidemiologic studies examine the risk for swimming-related illnesses based upon simultaneous exposure to more than one microbial surrogate (e.g. culturable E. coli densities, genetic markers). We addressed this research gap by investigating the association between swimming-related illness frequency and water quality determined from multiple bacterial and viral genetic markers. METHODS: Viral and bacterial genetic marker densities were d…
