IMPORTANCE: Little is known about structural brain changes in type 1 diabetes (T1D) and whether there are early manifestations of a neurodegenerative condition like Alzheimer disease (AD) or evidence of premature brain aging.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate neuroimaging markers of brain age and AD-like atrophy in participants with T1D in the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT)/Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study, identify which brain regions are associated with the greatest changes in patients with T1D, and assess the association between cognition and brai

This study investigated the suspicion that a significant proportion of individuals having spinal cord injury (SCI) also sustain a concomitant undiagnosed occult head injury during the trauma accident. The criteria for high risk of head injury included the following: (1) quadriplegia with high energy deceleration accident, (2) loss of consciousness at time of injury, (3) brainstem or cortical neurologic indicators, or (4) respiratory support required at time of injury. In this study, 67 patients admitted to the rehabilitation unit were given a neuropsychologic evaluation a median of 48 days aft

BACKGROUND: Cases of depression among adolescents are gradually increasing. The study of the physiological basis of cognitive function from a biochemical perspective has therefore been garnering increasing attention. Depression has been hypothesized to be associated with the brain biochemical metabolism of the anterior cingulate gyrus, frontal lobe white matter, and the thalamus.
AIM: To explore the application of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in the metabolic alterations in the prefrontal white matter (PWM) and gray matter (GM) in adolescents with depression.
METHODS: 1H-M

The present study aims to compare neuropsychological performance of patients following anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture (ACoA) with that of patients with alcoholic Korsakoff syndrome (AKS). Fifteen ACoA patients and ten age-and education-matched AKS patients were included in the study. All the patients were tested at least one year post onset of their illness at a stable condition. The WAIS and forward digit span scores of AKS were also matched to ACoA, and simple attention and general intelligence were well preserved both in ACoA and AKS. Frontal function as measured by the Wisc

Maternal vitamin B12 deficiency has been associated with disturbed cognitive functioning in offspring at different ages during childhood. However, this association has not been explored in pre-school-age children. The objective of this study was to examine the association between maternal vitamin B12 levels at the beginning and end of pregnancy and cognitive functioning in their children at 4 years of age. This longitudinal prospective study included a subsample of pregnant women and their children aged 4 years (n = 249) who participated in the ECLIPSES Study conducted in the province of Tarra

OBJECTIVE: To investigate neurocognitive deficits in children with Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome (CCHS) by comparing them to their parents, since parents comprise a particularly suitable control group matched on disease-extrinsic factors that can influence neurocognitive functioning. We compared CCHS patients to their parents and to population norms, hypothesizing that they would obtain lower intelligence test scores than both groups. We also compared patient-parent differences against patient-normative differences, to determine whether the two analytic approaches would yield dif

BACKGROUND: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of executive dysfunctions. As organizational strategies may play an important role as a possible endophenotype of the disorder, we decided to investigate non-verbal memory and organizational abilities in OCD. We also investigated how organization and non-verbal memory differ between responder and non-responder patients to pharmacological treatment, to test whether cognitive functions can predict the response to pharmacological treatment.
METHODS: In Study 1, executive and clinical functioning measures were applie

AIM: The specific amino acid intake has been suggested to be positively associated with the cognitive function. However, few reports have investigated the association between the amino acid intake and episodic memory (EM). Therefore, we investigated this association.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the fourth survey (2004-2006) of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences - Longitudinal Study of Aging. We analyzed 2,082 participants 40-85 years old (50.1% male). The dietary intake was assessed by the three-day dietary records, and participants were classified into sex- and age-specific t

Background: Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) and Korsakoff syndrome (KS) are underdiagnosed. The DSM-5 has raised the diagnostic threshold by including KS in the major neurocognitive disorders, which requires that the patient needs help in everyday activities. Methods: We report clinical, neuropsychological, and radiological findings from a patient who developed Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome as a result of alcohol use and weight loss due to major depression. We assess the diagnosis in the context of the scientific literature on KS and according to the DSM-IV and the DSM-5. Results: The patient dev

BACKGROUND: Patients with bipolar disorder (BD) present widespread and significant neurocognitive impairments during all stages of the disorder. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been used to improve clinical outcomes in common psychiatric diseases, such as depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and BD. Whether rTMS can improve cognitive function in BD patients remains unclear. The present study explored the regulatory effects of rTMS on cognitive function in patients with BD.
METHODS: Fifty-two eligible subjects with BD were randomly assigned to receive active or

INTRODUCTION: Acute mountain sickness (AMS) commonly occurs during rapid ascent to high altitudes and significantly affects the health and cognitive function of travellers and specialised personnel in high-altitude environments. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a non-invasive, safe and portable neuromodulation technique with potential benefits for AMS. This protocol evaluates taVNS efficacy for AMS and associated cognitive impairment and explores its mechanisms via multiomics analyses.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a single-centre, randomised, double-blind, sham-con

BACKGROUND: Cognitive decline is characteristic for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and also for healthy ageing. As a proof-of-concept study, we examined whether this decline can be counteracted using real-time fMRI neurofeedback training. Visuospatial memory and the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) were targeted.
METHODS: Sixteen healthy elderly subjects (mean age 63.5 years, SD = 6.663) and 10 patients with prodromal AD (mean age 66.2 years, SD = 8.930) completed the experiment. Four additional healthy subjects formed a sham-feedback condition to validate the paradigm. The protocol spanned five examina

BACKGROUND: An increased risk of impaired intelligence (IQ) has been documented in valproate-exposed children, but investigations have not previously focused on those with a clinical diagnosis of Fetal Valproate Syndrome (FVS).
METHODS: This cross sectional observational study recruited individuals with a diagnosis of FVS and completed standardized assessments of intellectual abilities making comparisons to a normative comparison group. Both mean difference (MD) and prevalence of scores below the lower average range were analyzed.
RESULTS: The mean full-scale IQ in 31 individuals with FVS (m

Developmental prosopagnosia (DP) is characterised by a severe lifelong impairment in face recognition. In recent years it has become clear that DP affects a substantial number of people, yet little work has attempted to improve face processing in these individuals. Intriguingly, recent evidence suggests that intranasal inhalation of the hormone oxytocin can improve face processing in unimpaired participants, and we investigated whether similar findings might be noted in DP. Ten adults with DP and 10 matched controls were tested using a randomized placebo-controlled double-blind within-subject

BACKGROUND: In patients with remitted psychosis, the dosage of antipsychotics can be lowered without increased risk of relapse. Whether dose tapering can lead to improved cognition is unclear. We compared changes in cognitive performance between patients undergoing dose tapering and those receiving a fixed maintenance dose.
METHODS: A 2-year prospective trial of patients with stable schizophrenia-related psychotic disorders was conducted: one group received guided dose reduction (GDR) and one group received maintenance treatment. Cognitive function was assessed using the Wechsler Adult Intell

BACKGROUND: White matter injury (WMI) and impaired neurodevelopment are common in children with congenital heart disease. However, the effect of WMI on neurodevelopmental outcomes is still rarely reported. In this study, we aimed to investigate microstructural changes in white matter (WM) and its relationship with neurodevelopmental outcomes and further explore the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms of neurocognitive impairments in the tetralogy of Fallot (ToF).
METHOD: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data were acquired in preschool-aged children with ToF (n = 29) and normal controls (NC
