OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of low-dose irradiated autologous peripheral blood reinfusion (LDIAPBR) on a rat model of radiation-induced leukopenia.

INTRODUCTION: Idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome is defined as persistently elevated peripheral blood absolute eosinophil count of more than 1.5 × 109/L for at least six months with no obvious secondary cause.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 26-year-old gentleman of Malay ethnicity who presented to the medical department with a three-week history of abdominal distension associated with dyspepsia and epigastric pain. Physical examination revealed ascites. The complete blood count portrayed peripheral leucocytosis with eosinophilia of 8.84 × 109/L. Parasitic serology was negative.

The effects of radiation on gut mucosal mast cells (MMC) and tissue eosinophils were examined. Groups of rat were given single doses of whole-body irradiation from 0.5 to 5 Gy. Radiolabelled tablets of slow-release iron and ferrous sulphate containing 50 mg of elemental iron were given to 28 patients, and iron absorption was studied using a whole body counter.There was no significant difference between the absorption of ferrous sulphate and that of slow-release iron in normal subjects, anaemic patients, anaemic and non-anaemic post-gastrectomy patients, or those with coeliac disease. Ascorbic acid potentiated iron absorption, especially in anaemic post-gastrectomy patients.The indications and hazards of slow release iron preparations are discussed.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of effective therapies for patients with Sézary syndrome and advanced mycosis fungoides with peripheral blood involvement. Total skin electron beam (TSEB) radiation therapy is an extremely effective skin-directed therapy for these patients, but, until recently, it was thought not to signifcantly affect the peripheral blood malignant T-cell population.

Total-body counters designed for clinical use have considerable advantage and application over other methods for the measurement of iron metabolism. An investigation may be performed on an out-patient basis and the need for faecal collections avoided. Although the initial cost of their installation is high, this can be off-set by the saving of in-patient costs in 2 or 3 years of operation.
