Wildland fire entrainment: The missing link between wildland fire and its environment.

Wildfires are growing in destructive power, and accurately predicting the spread and intensity of wildland fire is essential for managing ecological and societal impacts. No current operational models used for fire behavior prediction resolve critical fire-atmospheric coupling or nonlocal influences of the fire environment, rendering them inadequate in accounting for the range of wildland fire behavior scenarios under increasingly novel fuel and climate conditions. Here, we present a new perspective on a dominant fire-atmospheric feedback mechanism, which we term wildland fire entrainment (WFE…

Spatiotemporal Associations Between Deforestation and Acute Myocardial Infarction Mortality in the Brazilian Amazon.

Deforestation promotes environmental changes capable of altering regional microclimatic dynamics, intensifying wildfires, and increasing population exposure to cardiovascular risk factors. This study investigated the spatiotemporal association between deforestation and acute myocardial infarction mortality across health regions of the Brazilian Amazon between 2000 and 2023. An ecological study design was adopted using data aggregated by health region and year. Generalized additive models with a negative binomial distribution were fitted to evaluate nonlinear associations between deforestation …

Building Resilient Radiotherapy Systems: Lessons and Recommendations for Natural Disaster Risk Mitigation.

Natural disasters, including earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and severe winter storms, along with related technological failures such as prolonged power outages or even nuclear incidents, pose significant risks to radiotherapy continuity, where treatment interruptions are associated with compromised tumor control and survival outcomes. Since natural disasters are inevitable, building resilient radiotherapy systems requires systematic learning from prior disasters and proactive risk management. In this narrative review, we synthesized published literature, incident reports, and oper…

Coinfection with Trypanosoma evansi and Hepatozoon felis in a free-ranging jaguar (Panthera onca) in the Pantanal biome, Brazil.

Coinfection with Trypanosoma evansi and Hepatozoon felis represents a rare occurrence in wild felids, with no previous reports in Panthera onca. A free-ranging adult male jaguar weighing approximately 70 kg was examined after being rescued from wildfires in the Brazilian Pantanal (Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul). The initial hematological evaluation (D0) revealed mild anemia (PCV: 27.7%; reference: 30-45%), with Trypanosoma spp. trypomastigotes forms detected by direct microscopy. Treatment with diminazene aceturate (3.5 mg/kg, IM) was instituted on D1. On D5, microscopy revealed Hepatozoon felis…

Interstitial lung diseases in a changing climate: emerging risks and opportunities to improve care.

Although climate change represents one of the greatest public health challenges of our time, its impacts on patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) remain unclear. This Personal View synthesises the evidence surrounding established, emerging, and postulated climate change health effects on patients with ILD, who are especially vulnerable to disease due to older age, reduced lung function, and sensitivity to inhaled exposures. Established risk factors for ILD such as air pollution might worsen with climate change, whereas other exposures such as extreme heat, viral illnesses, residential

Environmental Exposures and Stroke Risk: Converging Pathways, Unequal Burdens, and Prevention Opportunities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To synthesize recent evidence on how environmental exposures influence stroke risk, with emphasis on air pollution, thermal stress, circadian and occupational disruption, built and social environments, and selected toxicants. RECENT FINDINGS: Long-term and episodic air pollution, especially fine particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅) and wildfire smoke, remain most consistently associated with stroke risk. Extreme heat combined with heat-humidity metrics is emerging as an important acute stroke trigger. Noise, artificial light at night, shift work, an

[New frontiers in pacing: from myocardial pacing to conduction system pacing].

For many years, cardiac pacing has been based on the stimulation of right ventricular common myocardium to correct diseases of the conduction system. The birth and the development of cardiac resynchronization have led to growing interest in the correction and prevention of pacing-induced dyssynchrony. Many observational studies and some randomized clinical trials have shown that conduction system pacing (CSP) can not only prevent pacing-induced dyssynchrony but can also correct proximal conduction system blocks, with reduction of QRS duration and with equal or greater effectiveness than bivent

Adverse eye effects of smoke exposure at prescribed burns in wildland firefighters.

OBJECTIVE: Despite exposure to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) and gases on the fire ground, little is known about the impact of wildfire smoke on the eye surface of wildland firefighters. This field study investigated the impact of smoke exposure at prescribed burns on the eye surface of Australian wildland firefighters. METHODS: Twenty-three firefighters (19-60 years, 78% male) were evaluated before and after four prescribed burns for eye symptoms and clinical signs of eye surface damage. Types of protective eyewear used were recorded and a subset of firefighters wore PM2.5 p

Intraspecific leaf morphometric diversity in the endangered and narrow endemic Quercus trojana subsp. euboica (Fagaceae): a quantitative dataset from three natural populations in Euboea, Greece.

This study provides the first quantitative dataset on leaf morphometric diversity for Quercus trojana subsp. euboica (Papaioannou) K.I.Chr., a narrow endemic oak of Greece. This subspecies is of high conservation priority, listed in the Red Data Book of Rare and Threatened Plants of Greece and its restricted range in Northern Euboea was heavily impacted by a catastrophic wildfire in 2021. We sampled 301 leaves from three natural populations (Kerasia1, Kerasia2 and Prokopi) and processed them using a custom Python pipeline to extract 14 size and shape variables. The Effects of Climate Change on Obstetric and Gynecologic Health.

In the United States and globally, the negative effects of climate change, such as extremes of heat, wildfire smoke, and air pollution, are associated with early pregnancy loss, preterm birth, preeclampsia, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and stillbirth. Climate change amplifies existing gender-based disparities, which include elevated risks of infectious diseases, malnutrition, sexual violence, mental health disorders, lack of reproductive control, negative obstetric outcomes, and death, when compared with men. These adverse effects disproportionately affect marginalized groups. With the

The need for more qualified liaison officers in a topsy-turvy world.

The need for more qualified liaison officers serving in a variety of emergency response roles from various critical emergency management (EM), law enforcement, and first response organizations is at an all-time high due to the variety of significant national disasters and emergencies our country endures. Moreover, having more qualified and accessible liaison officers would act as a "force multiplier" when serving our communities devastated by a hurricane, wildfire, ice storm, or a man-made tragic event, such as an active shooting situation. To that end, more qualified personnel from all parts

Forest fire emission estimates over South Asia using Suomi-NPP VIIRS-based thermal anomalies and emission inventory.

Emission estimates of carbon-containing greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4) and aerosols (PM2.5) were made from forest fire across South Asia using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) based thermal anomalies and fire products. VIIRS 375 m I-band active fire product was selectively retrieved for the years 2012-2021 over forest cover across South Asia. Annual incidence of fire events across South Asia was 0.17 (±0.05) million (M) with robust spatio-temporal variation. Fire occurrences were mainly concentrated over the forest across Hindu Kush Himalayan region (HKH; 56%), Deccan Plateau (DP

Demonstration of near-infrared open-path absorption spectroscopy for water vapor and temperature monitoring during structure-to-structure fire spread experiments.

With increasing threats from wildfires in wildland urban interface (WUI) areas, novel approaches for the characterization of fire dynamics and their interactions with built structures have accelerated. Here, we demonstrate an open-path, near-infrared laser absorption system for stand-off measurement of water vapor mole fraction and gas-phase temperature. The system was deployed along two optical paths during structure-to-structure fire spread experiments at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Initial demonstration of the system was completed from March 2024 through May 2024 in …

Temporal Trends and Geographic Clustering of U.S. Weather-Related Disasters (1989-2019): A Foundational Baseline for Healthcare Preparedness.

Over the past three decades, the United States has experienced a notable increase in weather-related disasters, including hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, wildfires, and severe storms, posing growing challenges to healthcare preparedness and public health systems. This study analyzes Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster declarations from 1989 to 2019 to characterize temporal and geographic trends in weather-related events. Data after 2019 were excluded to avoid confounding effects associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted disaster declarations, resource allocation, an…

A Home Between Environmental Changes and Climatic Anxiety.

It is becoming harder to feel at home. As wildfires, floods, drought, and heat become recurrent rather than exceptional, and as everyday life fills with weather alerts, evacuation warnings, and preparedness drills, many people experience a particular kind of distress: the pain of remaining in a place that is still physically present but no longer feels safe, familiar, or trustworthy. This paper examines that experience through the concept of solastalgia-homesickness felt while still at home-and argues that it is not a private mood or a distortion of thinking, but a meaningful disturbance in th…

Method and process towards developing a Health Vulnerability Index (HVI) for Extreme Weather Events (EWEs) for local residents in South Africa.

An increase in incidence and amplitude of extreme weather events (EWEs) linked to climate change, has resulted in greater human exposure and vulnerability to weather-related health effects. Increases in the occurrence of EWEs, including storms, flooding, extreme heat and wildfires, will impact health globally, with poor and vulnerable populations disproportionately affected. Vulnerability to EWEs, and the ability to adapt to these weather shocks, are influenced by existing physical, social and political limitations of a given region. As such, developing context-specific health vulnerability in…
