[A case of cerebral vascular disease associated with prosopagnosia and minor hemisphere syndrome (author's transl)].

A case of "apractognosia", a syndrome of minor hemisphere, and prosopagnosia was described. A 68 years old, right handed, hypertensive man who had experienced an episode of left hemiparesis of several weeks' duration developed a syndrome of minor hemisphere, metamorphopsia, visuoconstructive disability, spatial dysgraphia, topographical and geographical disorientation and dressing apraxia, with associated left homonymous hemianopsia. A right occipital lesion was disclosed by an isotopic brain scan and a CT scan. The CT scan also disclosed a generalized cerebral atrophy. Memory disturbance, bot

Cognitive load during speech perception in noise: the influence of age, hearing loss, and cognition on the pupil response.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of age, hearing loss, and cognitive ability on the cognitive processing load during listening to speech presented in noise. Cognitive load was assessed by means of pupillometry (i.e., examination of pupil dilation), supplemented with subjective ratings. DESIGN: Two groups of subjects participated: 38 middle-aged participants (mean age = 55 yrs) with normal hearing and 36 middle-aged participants (mean age = 61 yrs) with hearing loss. Using three Speech Reception Threshold (SRT) in stationary noise tests, we estimated the s

Postural instability and cognitive dysfunction in early Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability is one of the most disabling features of Parkinson's disease, usually occurring in late and advanced stages. The aim of this study was to investigate the postural performance of early-stage de novo Parkinson's disease patients with no clinical postural instability using computerized dynamic posturography. We sought to understand the relationship between postural sway and disease severity and the relationship between postural instability quantitatively measured by computerized dynamic posturography and cognitive impairment in early-stage Parkinson's disease pati

Specific reading and phonological processing deficits are associated with damage to the left frontal operculum.

Functional neuroimaging studies in normal subjects indicate that a region in the left frontal operculum (FO) is more active when subjects read pronounceable nonwords as compared to most word types. Here, we report convergent evidence on this finding using the lesion method. We tested the prediction that subjects with left FO damage would have impaired reading of pronounceable nonwords, but relatively intact reading of most word types. Eleven target subjects with circumscribed left FO lesions, and two comparison groups of either brain-damaged or normal subjects matched to the target subjects fo

From Feedback-Learning to Semantic Memory: Can Feedback-Related Brain Activity Predict Object-Word Associations?

This study investigated the neural mechanisms underlying feedback-based learning of novel-object-novel-word associations, focusing on how feedback-locked event-related potentials acquired during learning relate to subsequent memory performance and acquired association strength. Specifically, we examined whether amplitudes of the feedback-related negativity (FRN) and N170 components after immediate or delayed feedback predicted not only free recall and recognition performance, but also N400 priming effects exerted by the novel objects on the novel words as a neural correlate of the strength of

Methyl mercury exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes in the Seychelles Child Development Study Main cohort at age 22 and 24years.

BACKGROUND: All fish contain methyl mercury (MeHg), a known neurotoxicant at adequate dosage. There is still substantial scientific uncertainty about the consequences, if any, of mothers consuming fish with naturally-acquired levels of MeHg contamination. In 1989-1990, we recruited the Main Cohort of the Seychelles Child Development Study to assess the potential developmental effects of prenatal MeHg exposure. We report here on associations with neurodevelopmental outcomes obtained at 22 and 24years of age. METHODS: Neurodevelopmental tests at 22years included the Boston Naming Test, Cambridg

Cerebrospinal fluid interferon alpha levels correlate with neurocognitive impairment in ambulatory HIV-Infected individuals.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HANDs) continue to be common and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. However, the underlying mechanisms in the combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) era are not fully understood. Interferon alpha (IFNα) is an antiviral cytokine found to be elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of individuals with advanced HIV-associated dementia in the pre-cART era. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the association between IFNα and neurocognitive performance in ambulatory HIV-infected individuals with milder impairment. An eight-t

Frontal and anterior cingulate activation during overt verbal fluency in patients with first episode psychosis.

OBJECTIVE: Functional neuroimaging studies using phonological verbal fluency tasks allow the assessment of neural circuits relevant to the neuropsychology of psychosis. There is evidence that the prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate gyrus present different activation patterns in subjects with chronic schizophrenia relative to healthy controls. We assessed the functioning in these brain regions during phonological verbal fluency in subjects with recent-onset functional psychoses, using functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI). METHODS: Seven patients with functional psychoses (3 schizo

Do combined oral contraceptives have long-term effects? Little evidence of an enduring effect on cognitive function in former users.

The use of combined oral contraceptives (COCs) is associated with subtle differences in brain activity and in certain cognitive, perceptual, or affective processes among current COC users compared with non-users. Whether any differences persist after the COCs are discontinued is essentially unknown. In a retrospective analysis of a cognitive dataset from healthy adults (N = 221, Mage = 23.78 yrs), we asked whether any residual effects of COC use could be identified in former users (who had discontinued their COCs ∼30 mo prior) on standardized tests of verbal fluency and visuospatial function.

Relationship between residual cholesterol and cognitive performance: a study based on NHANES.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Age-related cognitive impairment impacts a significant portion of the elderly population. Remnant cholesterol (RC) has attracted increased attention in relation to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, and fatty liver disease. Nevertheless, its role in cognitive function is still enigmatic, prompting our exploration into the potential associations between them. METHODS: A total of 1,331 participants from the NHANES (2011-2014) database, all aged over 60, were included in this investigation. Cognitive function was assessed using four widely applied tests, includi

Association between Vitamin B12 levels and cognitive function in the elderly Korean population.

Vitamin B12 (B12), also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin. It is a cofactor in DNA synthesis and is involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, including the central nervous system. Those with a deficiency of B12 can present with peripheral neuropathy, pernicious anemia, or a cognitive disorder. Previous studies have revealed that a deficiency of B12 is associated with cognitive decline or Alzheimer disease. The data of 2991 people were evaluated from 2 years of the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study, a nationwide multicenter survey. To assess cognitive function,

Sleep promotes illusory word compositions, a distinct form of false memory.

Extensive evidence supports the beneficial effects of sleep on memory and learning, including the consolidation and reorganization of memories and the extraction of regularities from encoded experiences. Nevertheless, some studies suggest that sleep may also increase false memories, potentially as a byproduct of regularities extraction. Physiologically, time-compressed memory replay in the hippocampus during non-rapid-eye-movement (nREM) sleep is believed to contribute to the consolidation process, although the functional significance of time compression remains elusive. Recently, we proposed
