Antimicrobial susceptibilities of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 isolated in Zimbabwe--implications for the management of dysentery.

Shigella dysenteriae type 1 was cultured from 56/170 (33 pc) rectal swab specimens collected from patients presenting to hospitals in Harare, Zimbabwe with dysentery. All of the isolates were resistant in vitro to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, with MICs > 32 mg/l, and all except one were resistant to ampicillin, most with an MIC > 256 mg/l. One isolate was resistant to nalidixic acid (MIC > 256 mg/l), but all of the others were sensitive, most with an MIC of 2 mg/l or less. Using antibiotic disks, 96 pc isolates were resistant to chloromphenicol and 94 pc to tetracycline. All isolates were se…

Epidemiology of Hymenolepis nana infections in primary school children in urban and rural communities in Zimbabwe.

Fecal specimens were obtained on 3 occasions at 10-12 wk intervals from 315 children in 3 rural villages in Zimbabwe and from 351 children in the high-density suburbs of an adjacent small town. Specimens were examined qualitatively and quantitatively for eggs of Hymenolepis nana, and these were found in 142 (21%) children. Infections occurred more frequently in younger children in the urban area but in older children in rural areas. The prevalence in urban areas (24%) was higher than in rural areas (18%), and in urban areas infection correlated with low "hygiene scores" (determined by observat…

Q fever in Zimbabwe. A review of the disease and the results of a serosurvey of humans, cattle, goats and dogs.

Sera from 494 humans, 180 cattle, 180 goats and 27 dogs, collected from different regions of Zimbabwe, were examined by indirect fluorescence for antibodies reactive with phase II Coxiella burnetii antigen. Overall, 37% of humans were reactive at a titre of 1/40 or greater, and there was no evidence of age- or sex-related differences in seroprevalence. A review of clinical and epidemiological features of Q fever is presented in order to alert health workers to this infection, which apparently occurs frequently in Zimbabwe even though clinical cases have not been reported. In animals, serologic…

Hookworm and roundworm infections in farm-worker communities in the large-scale agricultural sector in Zimbabwe.

Surveys were carried out to assess the prevalences and intensities of hookworm and roundworm infections in 15 farm-worker communities in Zimbabwe with poor living conditions. Examination of 1635 faecal samples showed that hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale) were the commonest helminths (61.7% of infections). They were followed by Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura at less than 3%. There were striking differences in prevalences and intensities of infection of the different helminthic parasites among the 15 communities surveyed. In general, differences between male…

Risk of hepatitis B infection among medical and paramedical workers in a general hospital in Zimbabwe.

To evaluate the addition of hepatitis vaccine to health schemes for hospital workers in Zimbabwe we undertook a cross sectional study of viral markers in 226 hospital workers and compared the results with 97 volunteer blood donor controls. One hundred and thirty one (58%) hospital workers had hepatitis markers compared with 45 (46%) of the donor group. Racial group was the strongest risk factor. Blacks were 70% more likely to have markers than whites. This racial difference was not explained by job status or patient contact. Our data suggest that work in a district general hospital does not co…

Control of schistosomiasis in large irrigation schemes by use of niclosamide. A ten-year study in Zimbabwe.

The development of chemical control strategies, and regular assessments of snail populations over a 10-year period, has resulted in reduced incidence of disease and the efficient use of niclosamide by competent administrators. Full knowledge of all water-bodies, strict surveillance programs, and timing of dam treatments have minimized the chances of snails becoming infected within a 380-km2 area. The scheme is now entirely estate-run and administered. In spite of soaring prices, particularly those of chemicals, control costs have changed minimally and are less than, or comparable with, those o

A First Quantification of Plant Endemism in the Manica Highlands (Zimbabwe-Mozambique) and the Significance of Open Habitats.

The Manica Highlands is a tropical transboundary mountain system shared by Zimbabwe and Mozambique, covering 7400 km2. Although extensively botanized for over 100 years, with many known endemic plant species, these have never been comprehensively enumerated or their patterns of distribution determined. Based primarily on herbarium specimens, we present here the first quantitative assessment of plant endemics, totaling 216 taxa (including subspecies and described varieties) and representing over 9% of the estimated total flora. The endemics are not evenly distributed across the Manica Highlands…

The gendered health impacts of climate change on smallholder women farmers in Mhondoro Ngezi, Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses significant threats to the livelihoods, health, and overall well-being of smallholder women farmers globally. In Mhondoro Ngezi, where agricultural production is predominantly rain-fed, high temperatures, recurrent droughts, and erratic rainfall patterns have intensified women's vulnerability to climate-induced health risks. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the gendered health impacts of climate change on women farmers and explored how these challenges intersect with broader socio-economic inequalities. METHODOLOGY: The research employed the Q methodology to id

A qualitative exploration of sonographers' views toward transvaginal ultrasound in Zimbabwe: A barriers and solutions approach.

INTRODUCTION: Given the increasing reliance on pelvic imaging and the superior diagnostic quality of transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS), the British Medical Ultrasound Society emphasizes that all eligible patients should be offered this procedure to ensure the highest standard of care. However, in Zimbabwe, anecdotal evidence indicates a reluctance among sonographers to offer it to patients. This study aimed to understand sonographers' views on the barriers to adopting TVUS and to identify potential solutions. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative exploratory design using semi-structured int…

Cholera Outbreaks in Zimbabwe: An In-Depth Analysis of Drivers, Constraints and Reimagining the Use of Medicinal Plants.

Cholera, an intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae, poses a severe threat to public health, particularly in developing countries. This narrative review discusses drivers for cholera outbreaks, challenges and viable alternatives, in Zimbabwe. A literature search was conducted using electronic databases notably ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and PubMed, as well as thesis and conference papers. Evidence indicates that the epidemiology, as well as risk factors, includes (1) extreme droughts; (2) political meddling in health issues and water supply; (3) natural disasters; (4) migration; (5) …

Changing the mindsets? Education and the intergenerational spread of tolerance for physical violence against women in Zimbabwe.

We investigate the relationship between childhood exposure to interparental violence and adult tolerance for violent beliefs against women. For individuals who have witnessed parental violence in childhood, our analysis suggests a 14.3-15.2 percentage point (pp) increase in tolerance, highlighting the transmission of violent beliefs across generations. Leveraging Zimbabwe's 1980 education reform as a natural experiment through a regression discontinuity design, we explore the potential of increased education to disrupt this intergenerational transmission. The reform led to an approximately two…

Prevalence and causes of paediatric hearing loss in a rural province of Zimbabwe: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss (HL) in childhood is a significant disability with severe consequences for educational, cognitive, and social-emotional success. Nevertheless, prevalence estimates for HL in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are based on scarce data. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of HL in a sample of primary school children from a rural province of Zimbabwe. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed on primary school children aged 4-13 years from a rural Zimbabwean province. In the quietest room available, participants underwent audiometry, video otoscopy, and tympanometr…
