Zinc metabolism was studied in 34 patients with sickle cell anemia in a steady state and in six patients during sickle cell crisis. The patients in steady state were found to have significantly lower plasma levels and higher urinary levels of zinc than the 50 healthy adults in the control group. During sickle cell crisis the plasma zinc levels dropped to a mean value of 0.54 microgram/microL. These results support the concept that zinc deficiency occurs in sickle cell anemia and that further drops occur in the serum zinc levels during sickle cell crisis.

A six month old baby with acrodermatitis enteropathica was treated successfully up to the age of 2 1/2 years with oral zinc sulphate, 100 mg daily. No complications were seen but there were two relapses. The first was at the age of 15 months when the dose of zinc sulphate was reduced to 50 mg daily and the second at 20 months when the zinc was stopped by mistake.

The present review is concerned by the main features of zinc metabolism (requirements, intestinal absorption, tissue distribution, excretion). The relationships between zinc variations and gut pathology are discussed with respect to the following points: criteria for the diagnostic of zinc deficiency, pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical consequences, therapeutic implications. Evidence for zinc malabsorption is present in Acrodermatitis enteropathica and in chronic zinc deficiency observed in Middle-East. During last decade zinc deficiency has been frequently reported in total parenteral fe…

A patient with multiple enterocutaneous fistulae who developed the skin manifestations of acrodermatitis enteropathica while on total parenteral nutrition is described. The value of monitoring the serum alkaline phosphatase to demonstrate zinc deficiency is shown. The skin manifestations responded rapidly to the re-introduction of zinc to the diet.

An elevated zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) level in blood is indicative of lead poisoning (as well as iron-deficiency anemia) and is the basis for certain fluorometric screening tests. The calibration of such test protocols and instruments requires ways to reliably determine absolute ZPP concentrations in blood. Two such methods are described: one is an ethanol extraction method and the other a fluorometric addition method using detergent hemolyzed blood. A careful determination of the molar extinction coefficient of ZPP gives EmM=161 in pyridine. Corrections are offered for a previously published …

Two patients, who were on long term parenteral hyperalimentation, developed skin lesions similar to those seen in acrodermatitis enteropathica. Both patients were treated with oral zinc sulphate and their skin lesions cleared completely. These patients are presented as an acquired zinc deficiency syndrome.

The administration of zink-bacitracin, mainly bacipharmin, at rates of 300 mg per kg with the feed did not produce toxic effects in birds: there were no changes in the general condition and the blood picture, the activity of SGPT and SGOT, the blood level of sugar, and the microstructure of the viscera over a period of 90 days. However, doses of 1000 mg/kg of the preparation given with the feed to chickens led to sporadic cases of slightly expressed karyopycnosis in the renal tubules. Established was a growth-stimulating effect. By the end of the experimental period the relaive weight of the a

Nephrosis was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats in two separate studies by injections of aminonucleoside with sacrifice of animals on days 20 and 54, respectively. Experimental animals in both studies showed the typical findings of nephrosis, i.e., hypoalbuminemia, hypercholesterolemia, and proteinuria. Biochemical findings included hypozincemia and hyperzincuria. A significant correlation between hypozincemia and hypoalbuminemia was noted in the short-term study. Proteinuria occurred on the 10th day in the short-term study and the 15th day in the long-term study and increased quantitatively over…

The aim of this study was to investigate the toxicity of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) compared to different zinc salts (ZnSO4, Zn(NO3)2, and ZnCl2) in male mice. For this purpose, 45 male mice were divided into five groups of nine (one control group). Mice were exposed to ZnO NPs and various zinc salts for 28 days, while the control group remained unexposed. After the exposure period, the mice were euthanized, and hematological, biochemical, enzymatic, and histopathological changes were recorded. Most hematological (RBC, WBC, Hb, Ht counts), biochemical (cholesterol, triglyceride, glucos…

Zinc is an essential trace element crucial for growth and development and plays a significant role in male reproductive function. The aim of this study was explore the mechanism of male reproductive damage caused by different degrees of zinc deficiency. Thirty male ICR mice were randomly assigned to three groups: zinc-normal diet group (ZN, n = 10, Zn content = 30 mg/kg), low zinc-deficiency diet group (LZD, n = 10, Zn content = 15 mg/kg), and high zinc-deficiency diet group (HZD, n = 10, Zn content = 7.5 mg/kg). The mice were maintained for 8 weeks. At the end of the experiment, they were sac…
