[Clinical and anatomopathologic classification of fractures of the orbit].

One hundred forty-four orbital fractures treated between 1982 and 1987 were examined with special attention to the specific anatomic architecture and biomechanical aspects of the craniofacial skeleton. The following parameters were examined: lesion mechanism, the bony lesion observed at surgery, clinical signs of fracture and morphological, functional and esthetic sequellae. All operated patients had undergone an ophthalmological examination prior to surgery, with special attention on binocular vision and ocular motility. Fractures were classified into pathological groups according to the para

Morphological and Morphometric Analysis of the Pterion and Its Neurosurgical Implications.

Background The pterion is an important craniometrical landmark located on the lateral aspect of the skull, formed by the articulation of the frontal, parietal, squamous temporal, and greater wing of the sphenoid bones. Owing to its close relationship with vital neurovascular structures, such as the anterior division of the middle meningeal artery and the Sylvian fissure, precise knowledge of its morphology and location is essential for neurosurgical interventions, anthropological assessment, and forensic evaluation. This study aimed to investigate the morphological types of pterion and to dete

Extramedullary Intracranial Plasmacytomas: A Systematic Review of Literature.

Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an uncommon disorder characterized by the development of abnormal plasma cell tumors outside the bone marrow. These tumors are typically observed in various locations, including the upper respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract, and other soft tissues. Among the less explored manifestations of EMP is intracranial EMP, which remains poorly understood due to the limited literature available on the subject. The objective was to comprehend the population characteristics, localization, type, treatment, and outcomes of intracranial EMP. A systematic review of t

Ischemic stroke as an initial performance of polycythemia vera in young adults: A case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: As the second leading cause of death and disability worldwide, stroke is mainly caused by atherosclerosis and cardiac embolism, particularly in older individuals. Nevertheless, in young and otherwise healthy individuals, the causes of stroke can be more diverse and may include conditions such as patent foramen ovale, vasculitis, coagulopathies, genetic factors, or other undetermined causes. Although these other causes of stroke account for a relatively small proportion compared to ischemic stroke, they are becoming increasingly common in clinical practice and deserve attention. H

P14.05 How far can they grow... - Two clinical examples

Abstract Introduction: Cerebral metastases are the most common form of central nervous system (CNS) tumours in adults. However, malignant neoplasm may also involve structures external to the brain, such as tissue surrounding the base of the skull, and then metastasize to the brain either by direct invasion or by spreading by the cranial nerves. CASE1: A 74 year-old man, with a past history of chronic kidney disease due to renal artery thrombosis and hypertension, was admitted in the emergency room (ER) complaining of persisting pain in the superior half of the right hemiface and frontal region

Implementation, accuracy evaluation, and preliminary clinical trial of a CT-free navigation system for high tibial opening wedge osteotomy.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study are to design and evaluate a CT-free intra-operative planning and navigation system for high tibial opening wedge osteotomy. This is a widely accepted treatment for medial compartment osteoarthritis and other lower extremity deformities, particularly in young and active patients for whom total knee replacement is not advised. However, it is a technically demanding procedure. Conventional preoperative planning and surgical techniques have so far been inaccurate, and often resulting in postoperative malalignment representing either under- or over-correctio

Traumatic injuries: imaging of head injuries.

Due to the forces of acceleration, linear translation, as well as rotational and angular acceleration, the brain undergoes deformation and distortion depending on the site of impact of traumatizing force direction, severity of the traumatizing force, and tissue resistance of the brain. Linear translation of accereration in a closed-head injury can run along the shorter diameter of the skull in latero-lateral direction causing mostly extra-axial lesions (subdural hematoma, epidural hematoma, subarachnoidal hemorrhage) or quite pronounced coup and countercoup contusions. Contusions are considerab

Assessment of frontal lobe sagging after endoscopic endonasal transcribriform resection of anterior skull base tumors: is rigid structural reconstruction of the cranial base defect necessary?

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The endoscopic endonasal transcribriform approach (EETA) is a viable alternative option for resection of selected anterior skull base (ASB) tumors. However, this technique results in the creation of large cribriform defects. Some have reported the use of a rigid substitute for ASB reconstruction to prevent postoperative frontal lobe sagging. We evaluate the degree of frontal lobe sagging using our triple-layer technique [fascia lata, acellular dermal allograft, and pedicled nasoseptal flap (PNSF)] without the use of rigid structural reconstruction for large cribriform de

Same patient, same total knee arthroplasty, different outcomes? A pilot study comparing conventional vs. OMNIBotics Robotic-Assisted HLS KneetecTM (Corin®).

INTRODUCTION: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a well-established treatment for end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Robotic-assisted TKA (RA-TKA) has emerged over the past decade, enabling patient-specific implantation, precise bone cuts, and intraoperative control of gap balance and alignment. The HLS KneetecTM is a third condyle posterior stabilized TKA, initially designed for implantation using conventional manual instrumentation (C-TKA), and intended for use with an adjusted mechanical alignment. It can now also be implanted with robotic assistance. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the associ

Electrical Stimulation Enhances Migratory Ability of Transplanted Bone Marrow Stromal Cells in a Rodent Ischemic Stroke Model.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) transplantation is an important strategy for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Currently, there are no effective methods to guide BMSCs toward the targeted site. In this study, we investigated the effect of electrical stimulation on BMSCs migration in an ischemic model of rats. METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats weighing 200 to 250 g received right middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) for 90 minutes. BMSCs (2.5×105 cells/ 4 µl PBS) were stereotaxically injected into the left corpus callosum at 1 day after MCAO. After BMSCs injection, a plate

Elevated lactate as an early marker of brain injury in inflicted traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of disability and death in the pediatric population. The metabolic and neurochemical abnormalities that underlie traumatic brain injury remain poorly understood, but hypoxia-ischemic injury might play an important role. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated children with inflicted traumatic brain injury using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). We postulated that children with hypoxic-ischemic injury indicated by elevated lactate in the acute phase of injury will have worse early neurological status and short-term clinical outcomes than those w

Voxel-based spatial distribution of intracranial meningioma subtypes and their relationship to radiogenomic maps.

Meningiomas are histologically and genetically heterogeneous tumors with varying anatomical distributions. While distinct genetic mutations have been associated with specific tumor locations, the spatial distribution of histological subtypes and their relationship to radiogenomic profiles remains poorly defined. Moreover, the predictive value of spatial information for histopathological classification and tumor grading has not yet been systematically explored. This study aimed to systematically analyze the anatomical predilection of histological meningioma subtypes and their concordance with k

The influence of prosthetic suspension on gait and cortical modulations is persons with a transfemoral amputation: socket-suspended versus bone-anchored prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Persons with a transfemoral amputation (TFA) often experience difficulties in daily-life ambulation, including an asymmetrical and less stable gait pattern and a greater cognitive demand of walking. However, it remains unclear whether this is effected by the prosthetic suspension, as eliminating the non-rigid prosthetic connection may influence stability and cortical activity during walking. Spatiotemporal and stability-related gait parameters, as well as cortical activity during walking, were evaluated between highly active individuals (MFC-level K3-4) with a TFA and able-bodied (

Cranial nerve VII region of the traumatized facial skeleton: optimizing fracture repair with the endoscope.

OBJECTIVE: Cranial nerve VII (CN VII) is anatomically positioned adjacent to the condylar neck of the mandible and arch of the midface. Fracture treatment of this region of the facial skeleton remains controversial because of difficult surgical access. Conservative management rarely achieves anatomic fracture repair and can result in irreversible structural deformity and dysfunction. Traditional operative methods require access through very visible facial incisions and risk injury to the facial nerve. We report endoscopic methods of facial fracture repair in the region of CN VII that achieve e
