We describe the surgical technique of temporary removal of the posterior auditory canal wall with reconstruction and report the outcome of using this technique as a treatment method for cholesteatoma in a case series. In 32 cases of cholesteatoma surgery a technique of temporary removal of the posterior bony wall was applied. During primary surgery the posterior auditory canal wall was removed using an oscillating saw. For the purpose of reconstruction, the canal wall was repositioned and fixed using two titanium microplates (n = 26). In case the canal wall could not be reconstructed with oste

Chondrosarcoma of the temporal bone is a rare disease, with only 36 cases of this tumor having been reported in the English language literature. We report the case of a 52-year-old woman with myxoid chondrosarcoma of the temporal bone whose only symptom was progressive hearing loss. The tumor was removed using aspiration, mastoidectomy and tympanotomy, with retention of the jugular bulb. No recurrence has been noted 45 months after the operation. Diagnosis was established from histological examination of the surgical specimens. The clinical characteristics and management of this rare lesion ar…

Laser-Doppler-vibrometry is a useful method to measure vibrations of the tympanic membrane. It is suitable to objectively diagnose the middle ear. In comparison to tympanometry, laser-Doppler-vibrometry has greater sensitivity. Temporal bone specimens were specially prepared to simulate middle ear disorders like middle ear effusion, fixation of the malleus head, fixation of the stapes footplate and removal of the incus. A correlation between the displacement function of the umbo and the experimentally produced middle ear disorders could be demonstrated. For the first time it was possible to me
