A self-training deep neural network for early prediction of cognitive deficits in very preterm infants using brain functional connectome data.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning has been employed using brain functional connectome data for evaluating the risk of cognitive deficits in very preterm infants. Although promising, training these deep learning models typically requires a large amount of labeled data, and labeled medical data are often very difficult and expensive to obtain. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a self-training deep neural network (DNN) model for early prediction of cognitive deficits at 2 years of corrected age in very preterm infants (gestational age ≤32 weeks) using both labeled and unlabeled brain functional con

Prediction of 6 months endoscopic third ventriculostomy success rate in patients with hydrocephalus using a multi-layer perceptron network.

OBJECTIVE: Discrimination between patients most likely to benefit from endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and those at higher risk of failure is challenging. Compared to other standard models, we have tried to develop a prognostic multi-layer perceptron model based on potentially high-impact new variables for predicting the ETV success score (ETVSS). METHODS: Clinical and radiological data of 128 patients have been collected, and ETV outcomes were evaluated. The success of ETV was defined as remission of symptoms and not requiring VPS for six months after surgery. Several clinical and rad

How multisensory neurons solve causal inference.

Sitting in a static railway carriage can produce illusory self-motion if the train on an adjoining track moves off. While our visual system registers motion, vestibular signals indicate that we are stationary. The brain is faced with a difficult challenge: is there a single cause of sensations (I am moving) or two causes (I am static, another train is moving)? If a single cause, integrating signals produces a more precise estimate of self-motion, but if not, one cue should be ignored. In many cases, this process of causal inference works without error, but how does the brain achieve it? Electr

Coherent false seizure prediction in epilepsy, coincidence or providence?

OBJECTIVE: Seizure forecasting using machine learning is possible, but the performance is far from ideal, as indicated by many false predictions and low specificity. Here, we examine false and missing alarms of two algorithms on long-term datasets to show that the limitations are less related to classifiers or features, but rather to intrinsic changes in the data. METHODS: We evaluated two algorithms on three datasets by computing the correlation of false predictions and estimating the information transfer between both classification methods. RESULTS: For 9 out of 12 individuals both methods

Eye tracking based dyslexia detection using a holistic approach.

A new detection method for cognitive impairments is presented utilizing an eye tracking signals in a text reading test. This research enhances published articles that extract combination of various features. It does so by processing entire eye-tracking records either in time or frequency whereas applying only basic signal pre-processing. Such signals were classified as a whole by Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) that hierarchically extract substantial features scatter either in time or frequency and nonlinearly binds them using machine learning to minimize a detection error. In the experime

Early diagnosis of multiple sclerosis by OCT analysis using Cohen's d method and a neural network as classifier.

BACKGROUND: The consequences of inflammation, demyelination, axonal degeneration and neuronal loss in the central nervous system, typical of the development of multiple sclerosis (MS), are manifested in thinning of the retina and optic nerve. The purpose of this work is to diagnose early-stage MS patients based on analysis of retinal layer thickness obtained by swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). METHOD: OCT (Triton® SS-OCT device -Topcon, Tokyo, Japan-) recordings were obtained from 48 control subjects and 48 recently diagnosed MS patients. The following thicknesses were meas

Deep Physiological Model for Blood Glucose Prediction in T1DM Patients.

Accurate estimations for the near future levels of blood glucose are crucial for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) patients in order to be able to react on time and avoid hypo and hyper-glycemic episodes. Accurate predictions for blood glucose are the base for control algorithms in glucose regulating systems such as the artificial pancreas. Numerous research studies have already been conducted in order to provide predictions for blood glucose levels with particularities in the input signals and underlying models used. These models can be categorized into two major families: those based on tuning

Predicting Early Warning Signs of Psychotic Relapse From Passive Sensing Data: An Approach Using Encoder-Decoder Neural Networks.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) are chronic conditions, but the severity of symptomatic experiences and functional impairments vacillate over the course of illness. Developing unobtrusive remote monitoring systems to detect early warning signs of impending symptomatic relapses would allow clinicians to intervene before the patient's condition worsens. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aim to create the first models, exclusively using passive sensing data from a smartphone, to predict behavioral anomalies that could indicate early warning signs of a psychotic relapse. METHODS:

Using autoencoders as a weight initialization method on deep neural networks for disease detection.

BACKGROUND: As of today, cancer is still one of the most prevalent and high-mortality diseases, summing more than 9 million deaths in 2018. This has motivated researchers to study the application of machine learning-based solutions for cancer detection to accelerate its diagnosis and help its prevention. Among several approaches, one is to automatically classify tumor samples through their gene expression analysis. METHODS: In this work, we aim to distinguish five different types of cancer through RNA-Seq datasets: thyroid, skin, stomach, breast, and lung. To do so, we have adopted a previous

Intelligent system based on data mining techniques for prediction of preterm birth for women with cervical cerclage.

Preterm birth, defined as a delivery before 37 weeks' gestation, continues to affect 8-15% of all pregnancies and is associated with significant neonatal morbidity and mortality. Effective prediction of timing of delivery among women identified to be at significant risk for preterm birth would allow proper implementation of prophylactic therapeutic interventions. This paper aims first to develop a model that acts as a decision support system for pregnant women at high risk of delivering prematurely before having cervical cerclage. The model will predict whether the pregnancy will continue beyo

Deep convolutional neural networks for tongue squamous cell carcinoma classification using Raman spectroscopy.

With deep convolutional neural networks and fiber optic Raman spectroscopy, this study presents a novel classification method that discriminates tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) from non-tumorous tissue. To achieve this purpose, 24 tissues spectral data were first collected from 12 patients who had undergone a surgical resection due to the tongue squamous cell carcinomas. Then 6 blocks with each block including 1 convolutional layer and 1 max-pooling layer are used to extract the nonlinear feature representations from Raman spectra. The derived features form a representative vector, which

Novel stochastic framework for automatic segmentation of human thigh MRI volumes and its applications in spinal cord injured individuals.

Severe spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to skeletal muscle atrophy and adipose tissue infiltration in the skeletal muscle, which can result in compromised muscle mechanical output and lead to health-related complications. In this study, we developed a novel automatic 3-D approach for volumetric segmentation and quantitative assessment of thigh Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) volumes in individuals with chronic SCI as well as non-disabled individuals. In this framework, subcutaneous adipose tissue, inter-muscular adipose tissue and total muscle tissue are segmented using linear combination of di

Visual Explanations From Deep 3D Convolutional Neural Networks for Alzheimer's Disease Classification.

We develop three efficient approaches for generating visual explanations from 3D convolutional neural networks (3D-CNNs) for Alzheimer's disease classification. One approach conducts sensitivity analysis on hierarchical 3D image segmentation, and the other two visualize network activations on a spatial map. Visual checks and a quantitative localization benchmark indicate that all approaches identify important brain parts for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis. Comparative analysis show that the sensitivity analysis based approach has difficulty handling loosely distributed cerebral cortex, and appr

Paraconsistents artificial neural networks applied to the study of mutational patterns of the F subtype of the viral strains of HIV-1 to antiretroviral therapy.

The high variability of HIV-1 as well as the lack of efficient repair mechanisms during the stages of viral replication, contribute to the rapid emergence of HIV-1 strains resistant to antiretroviral drugs. The selective pressure exerted by the drug leads to fixation of mutations capable of imparting varying degrees of resistance. The presence of these mutations is one of the most important factors in the failure of therapeutic response to medications. Thus, it is of critical to understand the resistance patterns and mechanisms associated with them, allowing the choice of an appropriate therap

Arrhythmia identification with two-lead electrocardiograms using artificial neural networks and support vector machines for a portable ECG monitor system.

An automatic configuration that can detect the position of R-waves, classify the normal sinus rhythm (NSR) and other four arrhythmic types from the continuous ECG signals obtained from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database is proposed. In this configuration, a support vector machine (SVM) was used to detect and mark the ECG heartbeats with raw signals and differential signals of a lead ECG. An algorithm based on the extracted markers segments waveforms of Lead II and V1 of the ECG as the pattern classification features. A self-constructing neural fuzzy inference network (SoNFIN) was used to classify
