3D printed temporal bone as a tool for otologic surgery simulation.

PURPOSE: In this face validity study, we discuss the fabrication and utility of an affordable, computed tomography (CT)-based, anatomy-accurate, 3-dimensional (3D) printed temporal bone models for junior otolaryngology resident training. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After IRB exemption, patient CT scans were anonymized and downloaded as Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) files to prepare for conversion. These files were converted to stereolithography format for 3D printing. Important soft tissue structures were identified and labeled to be printed in a separate color than bone.

A novel 3D-printed solid phase microextraction device equipped with silver-polyaniline coated pencil lead for the extraction of phthalate esters in cosmeceutical products.

A screw-based portable and simple solid phase microextraction device was fabricated by a 3D printer and used in combination with the developed silver-incorporated porous polyaniline film pencil lead solid-phase microextraction fiber (Ag/PANI SPME). Scanning electron microscopy revealed a porous structure of the electrodeposited Ag/PANI film. The spectrum from energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and the elemental map confirmed the presence of silver in the porous polymer film. It was used under stirring for the extraction of five phthalate esters: dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthal

Novel mandibular advancement bite block with supplemental oxygen to both nasal and oral cavity improves oxygenation during esophagogastroduodenoscopy: a bench comparison.

Drug-induced respiratory depression is a major cause of serious adverse events. Adequate oxygenation is very important during sedated esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Nasal breathing often shifts to oral breathing during open mouth EGD. A mandibular advancement bite block was developed for EGD using computer-assisted design and three-dimensional printing techniques. The mandible is advanced when using this bite block to facilitate airway opening. The device is composed of an oxygen inlet with one opening directed towards the nostril and another opening directed towards the oral cavity. The ai

A 3D-printed functioning anatomical human middle ear model.

The middle ear is a sophisticated and complex structure with a variety of functions, yet a delicate organ prone to injuries due to various reasons. Both, understanding and reconstructing its functions has always been an important topic for researchers from medical and technical background. Currently, human temporal bones are generally used as model for tests, experiments and validation of the numerical results. However, fresh human preparations are not always easily accessible and their mechanical properties vary with time and between individuals. Therefore we have built an anatomically based

Thermo-Responsive Methylcellulose Hydrogels: From Design to Applications as Smart Biomaterials.

Methylcellulose (MC) is an attractive material used to produce thermo-responsive hydrogels. They undergo sol-gel transition when a critical temperature is reached, thus modifying their properties (e.g., physicochemical and mechanical) in response to temperature changes. This behavior is particularly attractive when the body temperature acts as a trigger to modulate the thermo-responsive behavior of MC hydrogels. In this regard, exciting advances have been achieved in the field of cell and drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine, making MC a very attractive and versatile bi

Autologous protein solution and 3D-Printed technologies as potential adjuncts to arthroscopic elbow release: a narrative review and conceptual framework.

Post-traumatic and degenerative elbow stiffness is a major cause of upper-limb disability, as relatively small losses of elbow and forearm motion can significantly impair activities of daily living and work capacity. Arthroscopic elbow release has evolved as a joint-preserving alternative to open arthrolysis in selected cases. Multiple series have demonstrated meaningful gains in flexion including extension arc and forearm rotation, high patient satisfaction, and low complication rates. However, residual pain, recurrent stiffness, and progressive osteoarthritic change remain problematic in a s

Modular Revision of a Failed Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Scapulo-Humeral Endoprosthesis in a Dog with Proximal Humeral Osteosarcoma: First Clinical Communication.

Canine appendicular osteosarcoma (OSA) is typically managed by limb amputation. However, this approach may be suboptimal in dogs with concurrent osteoarthrosis (OA). Limb-sparing surgery using three-dimensional (3D)-printed patient-specific implants (PSIs) may be an alternative, although evidence on implant durability and revision strategies remains limited, in particular for proximal humeral reconstructions. This report describes a 9-year-old, overweight dog referred for a 4-week history of persistent left forelimb lameness. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed a lesion affecting the proximal h

Limb-Sparing Surgery and Stifle Arthrodesis Using Patient-Specific 3D-Printed Guides and Endoprosthesis for Distal Femoral Chondrosarcoma in a Dog: A Case Report.

Limb-sparing techniques for appendicular primary bone tumors are still associated with a high rate of complications. Three-dimensional (3D)-printed patient-specific instruments could reduce these complications. The aim of this study is to describe a limb-sparing surgery using 3D-printed patient-specific guides (PSGs) and an endoprosthesis (PSE) to treat femoral chondrosarcoma in a dog. An eight-year-old female Golden Retriever presented with persistent lameness of the right hind limb, reluctance to move and difficulty in maintaining a standing position. Palpation of the right femur revealed an
