The Behavior of Muscle Oxygen Saturation, Oxy and Deoxy Hemoglobin during a Fatigue Test in Fibromyalgia.

Previous studies have reported that people with fibromyalgia (FM) could suffer from mitochondrial dysfunction. However, the consumption of muscle oxygen during physical exercise has been poorly studied. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the response of muscle oxygen during a fatigue protocol in people with FM and healthy controls (HC). In addition, the peak torque and the total work were assessed. A total of 31 participants (eighteen were people with fibromyalgia and thirteen were healthy controls) were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. All the participants underwent a fatigue proto

Infradian Rhythms in Cerebrovascular Oxygenation and Blood Volume in Humans at Rest: A 5-Year Study.

BACKGROUND: All parameters of human physiology show chronobiological variability. While circadian (cycle length ~ 24 h) rhythms of the neuronal, hemodynamic and metabolic aspects of human brain activity are increasingly being explored, infradian (cycle length > 24 h) rhythms are largely unexplored. AIM: We investigated if cerebrovascular oxygen saturation (StO2) and blood volume ([tHb]) values measured over many years in many subjects during resting show infradian rhythmicity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Absolute StO2 and [tHb] values (median over a 5 min resting-phase while sitting) were measured

Exposure to DDT and DDE and functional neuroimaging in adolescents from the CHAMACOS cohort.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest that exposure to p,p'-dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (p,p'-DDT) is associated with poorer cognitive function in children and adolescents, but the neural mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: We investigated associations of prenatal and childhood exposure to p,p'-DDT and its metabolite p,p'-dichloro-diphenyl-dichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) with cortical activation in adolescents using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS: We administered fNIRS to 95 adolescents from the Center for the Health Assessment of

Modulation of Interhemispheric Synchronization and Cortical Activity in Healthy Subjects by High-Definition Theta-Burst Electrical Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Various forms of theta-burst stimulation (TBS) such as intermittent TBS (iTBS) and continuous TBS (cTBS) have been introduced as novel facilitation/suppression schemes during repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), demonstrating a better efficacy than conventional paradigms. Herein, we extended the rTMS-TBS schemes to electrical stimulation of high-definition montage (HD-TBS) and investigated its neural effects on the human brain. METHODS: In a within-subject design, fifteen right-handed healthy adults randomly participated in 10 min and 2 mA HD-TBS sessions: unilater

Increased multimorbidity is associated with impaired cerebral and peripheral hemodynamic stabilization during active standing.

BACKGROUND: Age-related morbidities and frailty are associated with impaired blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) recovery after standing. Here we investigate how multimorbidity affects cerebral and peripheral hemodynamics during standing in a large sample of older patients. METHODS: Patients were recruited from a national Falls and Syncope Unit. They underwent an active stand test (5-10 min lying +3 min standing) with monitoring of continuous BP, HR, total peripheral resistance (TPR), stroke volume (SV), and a near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) derived cerebral tissue saturation index (TSI

Brain activity response to cues during gait in Parkinson's disease: A study protocol.

Various cueing strategies (internal and external) have been used to alleviate gait deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, it remains unclear which type of cueing strategy is most effective at different disease stages or with more severe walking impairment, such as freezing of gait (FOG). The underlying neural mechanisms of response to cueing are also unknown. This trial aims to: (i) determine brain activity response to cue stimulus (internal, visual, auditory or tactile) when walking in PD and; (ii) examine changes in brain activity to cues at different stages of PD. This ongoing singl

Enhanced phosphorus mobility in a calcareous soil with organic amendments additions: Insights from a long term study with equal phosphorus input.

The agricultural practice of replacing chemical fertilizers with organic amendments (manure and/or straw) may have consequences for phosphorus (P) loss to the environment. Such a knowledge gap was examined using a ten-year field trial in calcareous soil containing four treatments with the equal annual P input but varied organic amendment combinations as follows: mineral fertilizer only as control (MF), mineral fertilizer coupled with manure (MM), mineral fertilizer coupled with manure and straw (MMS) and mineral fertilizer coupled with straw (MS). The soil P distribution, P fractions and speci

Pesticide exposure and cortical brain activation among farmworkers in Costa Rica.

BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiological studies have reported associations of pesticide exposure with poor cognitive function and behavioral problems. However, these findings have relied primarily on neuropsychological assessments. Questions remain about the neurobiological effects of pesticide exposure, specifically where in the brain pesticides exert their effects and whether compensatory mechanisms in the brain may have masked pesticide-related associations in studies that relied purely on neuropsychological measures. METHODS: We conducted a functional neuroimaging study in 48 farmworkers fro

Using Hebbian-Type Stimulation to Rescue Arm Function After Stroke: Study Protocol for a Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Upper-extremity hemiplegia after stroke remains a significant clinical problem. The supplementary motor area (SMA) is vital to the motor recovery outcomes of chronic stroke patients. Therefore, rebuilding the descending motor tract from the SMA to the paralyzed limb is a potential approach to restoring arm motor function after stroke. Paired associative stimulation (PAS), which is based on Hebbian theory, is a potential method for reconstructing the connections in the impaired motor neural circuits. The study described in this protocol aims to assess the effects of cortico-peripher

Objective Assessment of Physiologic Alterations Associated With Hemodynamically Significant Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Extremely Premature Neonates.

Delay in closure of ductus arteriosus in postnatal life may lead to serious consequences and complications in an extremely premature neonate secondary to hemodynamic alterations in regional blood flow pattern in various organs. Despite the widespread recognition amongst neonatologists to identify a hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA) early in the postnatal course, there is lack of consensus in its definition and thus the threshold to initiate treatment. Echocardiographic assessment of PDA shunt size and volume combined with neonatologists' impression of clinical signif

Oxidative stress response in children undergoing cardiac surgery: Utility of the clearance of isoprostanes.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac surgery (CS) in pediatric patients induces an overt oxidative stress (OS) response. Children are particularly vulnerable to OS related injury. The immaturity of their organs and antioxidant systems as well as the induction of OS in cardio-pulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery may have an important impact on outcomes. The purpose of this study was to describe the OS response, measured by urinary free 8-iso-PGF2α, in infants undergoing CS and to evaluate the relationship between OS response and post-operative clinical outcomes. METHODS: Infants with congenital heart disease under

Regional Oxygenation and Perfusion Monitoring to Optimize Neonatal Packed Red Blood Cell Transfusion Practices: A Systematic Review.

Contemporary packed red blood cell transfusion practices in anaemic preterm infants are primarily based on measurement of hemoglobin or haematocrit. In neonatal intensive care units, most preterm infants receive at least 1 packed red cell transfusion as standard treatment for anaemia of prematurity. Clinicians are faced with a common question "at what threshold should anaemic preterm infants receive packed red blood cell transfusion?". While evidence from interventional trials offers a range of haemoglobin levels to clinicians on thresholds to initiate red cell transfusion, it does not offer i

Effect of Intrauterine Growth Restriction on Cerebral Regional Oxygen Saturation in Preterm and Term Neonates during Immediate Postnatal Transition.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is associated with adverse perinatal outcome. Affected fetuses commonly display typical blood flow redistribution towards the brain ("brain sparing"). Accordingly, increased cerebral oxygen saturation has been observed in IUGR neonates within the first days of life. AIM: The aim of our study was to assess cerebral oxygenation behavior during immediate neonatal transition in IUGR infants. METHODS: This is a retrospective single-center observational cohort study. Cerebral regional oxygen saturation (crSO2) was measured with near-infrared spect

Does Movement Matter? Prefrontal Cortex Activity During 2D vs. 3D Performance of the Tower of Hanoi Puzzle.

In the current study, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to compare prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity in adults as they performed two conditions of the Tower of Hanoi (ToH) disk-transfer task that have equivalent executive function (EF) but different motor requirements. This study explored cognitive workload, here defined as the cognitive effort utilized while problem-solving by performance output. The first condition included a two-dimensional (2D) computerized ToH where participants completed trials using a computer mouse. In contrast, our second condition used a traditiona

Effects of Motor Imagery and Visual Neurofeedback on Activation in the Swallowing Network: A Real-Time fMRI Study.

Motor imagery of movements is used as mental strategy in neurofeedback applications to gain voluntary control over activity in motor areas of the brain. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study, we first addressed the question whether motor imagery and execution of swallowing activate comparable brain areas, which has been already proven for hand and foot movements. Prior near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) studies provide evidence that this is the case in the outer layer of the cortex. With the present fMRI study, we want to expand these prior NIRS findings to the whole

Acute reduction in cerebral blood velocity on supine-to-stand transition increases postural instability in young adults.

We tested the hypothesis that transient deficits in cerebral blood flow are associated with postural sway. In 19 young, healthy adults, we examined the association between the drop in cerebral blood flow during supine-to-stand transitions, indexed by transcranial Doppler ultrasound [middle cerebral artery blood velocity at diastole (MCAdv)] and near-infrared spectroscopy [tissue saturation index (TSI)] and the center of pressure displacement while standing. Participants performed transitions under three conditions aimed at progressively increasing the drop in MCAdv, in a randomized order: 1) a
