Sustainability trade-offs in sludge-to-energy systems: a process-resolved assessment of thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment.

Thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment (THP) is increasingly integrated into sludge-to-energy systems to enhance energy recovery, yet its environmental performance remains uncertain because most life cycle assessments (LCAs) treat these systems as aggregated units, limiting the representation of process-level interactions and environmental trade-offs. This study evaluates THP at 60, 80, and 120 °C in a sludge-to-energy system by propagating experimentally derived process changes through an integrated framework that combines process modelling, LCA, and techno-economic analysis. THP at 120 °C improved

Evaluation and modeling of environmental stressors affecting enteric microbial survival in soil: Implications for wastewater reuse and risk management.

The agricultural reuse of wastewater is a crucial solution to water scarcity, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. However, microbial contamination poses significant health risks, necessitating a better understanding of pathogen survival in natural environmental conditions. This study aimed to investigate the survival dynamics of key enteric bacteria, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Enterococcus faecium, alongside viral particles, including human adenovirus (HAdV) and a double-stranded DNA somatic coliphage, in soil under real-world semi-arid conditions across two distinct seasons.

Deforestation and retail prices of Brazilian beef: a preregistered product-level econometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cattle ranching is the leading proximate driver of deforestation in Brazil. Efforts to eradicate deforestation could incur a trade-off between forest conservation and agricultural production, as conservation constrains the supply of new agricultural land and requires investments in traceability and improved agricultural production, potentially negatively affecting consumer welfare through increased retail prices. We estimated the effect of deforestation on consumer prices using supply chain data for 2980 beef products in Brazil. METHODS: We investigated the effect of deforestation

Identifying causal pathways and risk-decision rules for nitrous oxide emission hot moments in wastewater treatment plants using probabilistic causal machine learning.

Nitrous oxide (N_2O) emissions from biological wastewater treatment represent a significant challenge for climate-responsible operation due to their intermittency and occurrence as short-lived emission hot moments. Effective mitigation therefore requires accurate prediction and systematic identification of causal pathways and operational risk conditions. This study develops a probabilistic causal machine learning framework based on long-term online monitoring data from a full-scale wastewater treatment plant for low-emission process control and operational management. An optimal predictive mod

A Qualitative Ecological Exploration of Black Perinatal Mental Health and Wellbeing.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than White women and experience disproportionately higher rates of maternal mental health issues across pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Structural racism, healthcare bias, and inequitable access to culturally responsive care position Black women among the most underserved and undertreated populations in the nation and contribute to intergenerational impacts on Black families and communities. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand how Black communit

Combined Effects of Long-Term Sulfur Dioxide Exposure and Environmental Heat Stress on the Risk of Kidney Stone Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Kidney stone disease is influenced by environmental, metabolic, and climatic factors. Although sulfur dioxide and environmental heat stress have each been associated with renal dysfunction, their combined long-term effects on kidney stone development remain unclear. This study examined whether chronic exposure to ambient sulfur dioxide and environmental heat stress was associated with incident kidney stone disease. METHODS: A total of 20 670 participants from the Taiwan Biobank who were free of kidney stones at baseline were analyzed and followed for a mean of 42.8 months. Long-te

How to achieve coordinated and sustainable development between urban flood resilience and ecosystem services at the urban agglomeration scale.

Urban flood resilience (UFR) and ecosystem services are crucial concepts and methods for mitigating flood risks and boosting the coordinated and sustainable development in urban agglomerations. While most studies assess UFR or ecosystem services from a single perspective, the interaction between the two remains insufficiently explored. Here, an integrated analytical framework was established to examine the relationship between the two. Taking the Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration as a sample region, the research first constructed an assessment index system for evaluating UFR levels. Then

The climate and health impact of U.S. radiation therapy: estimating greenhouse gas emissions, DALYs, and potential of hypofractionation.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Climate change is a global crisis, with the healthcare sector contributing 8.5-10 % of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States (U.S.). Radiation oncology, particularly through patient transportation for external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), is known to contribute to these emissions. In this study, we aim to quantify the annual GHG emissions in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) from EBRT in the U.S., estimate their down-stream impact on human health in terms of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) lost, and evaluate the potential reduction in emissions throug

An integrated framework for flood risk forecasting utilizing global weather predictions and hydrodynamic Modelling: An appraisal of the Krishna River Basin case study, India.

Flood risk forecasting is a critical non-structural component of disaster management and mitigation; however, limited studies in India have addressed it at the river basin scale with an emphasis on response-driven planning. This study proposes a novel and scalable framework for flood risk forecasting that integrates global rainfall forecasts, hydrodynamic modelling, and socioeconomic vulnerability (SEV) assessment to support response prioritization. The methodology is demonstrated over the Krishna River Basin (KRB), a large, geomorphologically diverse, and flood-prone basin spanning four India

Cyanobacteria newly isolated from marine volcanic seeps display rapid sinking and robust, high-density growth.

UNLABELLED: Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic organisms that play important roles in carbon cycling and are promising bioproduction chassis. Here, we isolate two novel cyanobacteria with 4.6Mbp genomes, UTEX 3221 and UTEX 3222, from a unique marine environment with naturally elevated CO₂. We describe complete genome sequences for both isolates and, focusing on UTEX 3222 due to its planktonic growth in liquid, characterize biotechnologically relevant growth and biomass characteristics. UTEX 3222 outpaces other fast-growing model strains on a solid medium. It can double every 2.35 hours in a liqu

Dust storms increase the tolerance of phytoplankton to thermal and pH changes.

Aquatic communities are increasingly subjected to multiple stressors through global change, including warming, pH shifts, and elevated nutrient concentrations. These stressors often surpass species tolerance range, leading to unpredictable consequences for aquatic communities and ecosystem functioning. Phytoplankton, as the foundation of the aquatic food web, play a crucial role in controlling water quality and the transfer of nutrients and energy to higher trophic levels. Despite the significance in understanding the effect of multiple stressors, further research is required to explore the co

The effect of temperature on the boundary conditions of West Nile virus circulation in Europe.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a vector-borne flavivirus that causes an increasing number of human and equine West Nile fever cases in Europe. While the virus has been present in the Mediterranean basin and the Balkans since the 1960s, recent years have witnessed its northward expansion, with the first human cases reported in Germany in 2018 and the Netherlands in 2020. WNV transmission and amplification within mosquitoes are temperature-dependent. This study applies a mathematical modelling approach to assess the conditions under which WNV circulation occurs based on the proportion of mosquito bite

Quantifying the contributions of natural and anthropogenic dust sources in Shanxi Province, northern China.

Dust storms have direct or indirect impacts on climate change and human health. Identifying and quantifying natural/anthropogenic dust sources can facilitate effective prevention and control of dust events. Based on surface real-time PM10 monitoring data, satellite remote sensing and the HYSPLIT model, this study determined the specific timing, coverage and sources of dust events in Shanxi Province, Northern China. Thus, a composite fingerprinting technique was established to quantify potential dust sources and dust contributions of single dust events. The dust oxidation model was validated, i

A generalized framework for estimating snakebite underreporting using statistical models: A study in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenoming is a neglected tropical disease affecting deprived populations, and its burden is underestimated in some regions where patients prefer using traditional medicine, case reporting systems are deficient, or health systems are inaccessible to at-risk populations. Thus, the development of strategies to optimize disease management is a major challenge. We propose a framework that can be used to estimate total snakebite incidence at a fine political scale. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: First, we generated fine-scale snakebite risk maps based on the distribution of

Associations of meteorological factors and dynamics of scrub typhus incidence in South Korea: A nationwide time-series study.

Scrub typhus, also known as Tsutsugamushi disease, is a climate-sensitive vector-borne disease that poses a growing public health threat. However, studies on the association between scrub typhus epidemics and meteorological factors in South Korea need to be complemented. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the association among ambient temperature, precipitation, and the incidence of scrub typhus in South Korea. First, we obtained data on the weekly number of scrub typhus cases and concurrent meteorological variables at the city-county level (Si-Gun) in South Korea between 2001 and 2019. Subsequent

Fracture-controlled surfaces as extremely durable ice-shedding materials.

Icing imposes a significant burden on those living in cold climates, with negative impacts on infrastructure, transportation, and energy systems. Over the past few decades, a wide range of materials with ice-shedding characteristics have been developed, including surfaces that are non-wetting/hydrophobic, liquid-infused, stress-localized, and those with low interfacial toughness. Although many of these materials have demonstrated low ice adhesion in a laboratory setting, none have achieved widespread practical adoption. This is primarily a result of the fact that they tend to have very low dur

Explainable Gated Recurrent Unit to explore the effect of co-exposure to multiple air pollutants and meteorological conditions on mental health outcomes.

Mental health conditions have the potential to be worsened by air pollution or other climate-sensitive factors. Few studies have empirically examined those associations when we faced to co-exposures, as well as interaction effects. There would be an urgent need to use deep learning to handle complex co-exposures that might interact in multiple ways, and the model performance reinforced by SHapely Additive exPlanations (SHAP) enabled our predictions interpretable and hence actionable. Here, to evaluate the mixed effect of short-term co-exposure, we conducted a time-series analysis using approxi

Risk factors for Lyme disease: A scale-dependent effect of host species diversity and a consistent negative effect of host phylogenetic diversity.

Biodiversity can influence disease risk. One example of a diversity-disease relationship is the dilution effect, which suggests higher host species diversity (often indexed by species richness) reduces disease risk. While numerous studies support the dilution effect, its generality remains controversial. Most studies of diversity-disease relationships have overlooked the potential importance of phylogenetic diversity. Furthermore, most studies have tested diversity-disease relationships at one spatial scale, even though such relationships are likely scale dependent. Using Lyme disease as a mod
