Artificial neural networks for the definition of kinetic subpopulations in electroejaculated and epididymal spermatozoa in the domestic cat.

This study was designed for the identification of different sperm kinetic subpopulations in feline semen using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and for the evaluation of the effect of ejaculation on motility patterns of these subpopulations. Seven tomcats presented for routine orchiectomy were electroejaculated, and after 5 days, orchiectomized and epididymal tail sperms were collected. Sperm motility characteristics were evaluated using a computer-assisted sperm analyzer that provided individual kinetic characteristics of each spermatozoon. A total of 23 400 spermatozoa for electroejaculated

Evaluation of a neural network-based control strategy for a cost-effective externally-powered prosthesis.

This paper presents a control strategy that compensates for the nonlinearity in the inexpensive sensors and hardware of a cost effective prosthetic hand. The control strategy uses neural network-based force control and sensory feedback to detect disturbance induced by slippage. The neural network approach is chosen over other nonlinear models because it is easy to implement and it offered the additional advantage of having its parameters easily adjusted over the life span of the device. The proposed strategy was evaluated on a functional multi-digit underactuated prosthetic hand. The initial a

Questionnaire tools for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome from the patient history.

INTRODUCTION: There remains no "gold standard" for the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Clinical diagnosis is often held to be paramount but depends on the skills of the individual practitioner. We describe two mathematical approaches to the analysis of a history obtained by questionnaire. METHODS: We used two earlier instruments, a conventional logistic regression analysis, and an artificial neural network to analyze data from 5860 patients referred for diagnosis of hand symptoms. We evaluated their ability to predict whether nerve conduction studies would show evidence of CTS usin

Trypano-PPI: a web server for prediction of unique targets in trypanosome proteome by using electrostatic parameters of protein-protein interactions.

Trypanosoma brucei causes African trypanosomiasis in humans (HAT or African sleeping sickness) and Nagana in cattle. The disease threatens over 60 million people and uncounted numbers of cattle in 36 countries of sub-Saharan Africa and has a devastating impact on human health and the economy. On the other hand, Trypanosoma cruzi is responsible in South America for Chagas disease, which can cause acute illness and death, especially in young children. In this context, the discovery of novel drug targets in Trypanosome proteome is a major focus for the scientific community. Recently, many researc

Developmental word grounding through a growing neural network with a humanoid robot.

This paper presents an unsupervised approach of integrating speech and visual information without using any prepared data. The approach enables a humanoid robot, Incremental Knowledge Robot 1 (IKR1), to learn word meanings. The approach is different from most existing approaches in that the robot learns online from audio-visual input, rather than from stationary data provided in advance. In addition, the robot is capable of learning incrementally, which is considered to be indispensable to lifelong learning. A noise-robust self-organized growing neural network is developed to represent the top

Retrograde facilitation under midazolam: the role of general and specific interference.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled experiment that used midazolam, a benzodiazepine that creates temporary amnesia, we compared acquisition and retention of paired associates of different types. Some word pairs were studied before the injection of saline or midazolam, and two lists of word pairs were studied after the injection. Critical comparisons involved retention of pairs that were practiced on all three lists, pairs studied on only one list, and pairs that involved recombining cue and response terms from one list to the next, as a function of drug condition. Previous research with ben

Measuring information integration.

BACKGROUND: To understand the functioning of distributed networks such as the brain, it is important to characterize their ability to integrate information. The paper considers a measure based on effective information, a quantity capturing all causal interactions that can occur between two parts of a system. RESULTS: The capacity to integrate information, or Phi, is given by the minimum amount of effective information that can be exchanged between two complementary parts of a subset. It is shown that this measure can be used to identify the subsets of a system that can integrate information,

Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation for articular angle control with an Inverse Dynamics Model tuned by a neural network.

A Functional Neuromuscular Stimulation (FNS) system was developed to restore the motor function of people with central nervous system disorders. An FNS articular angle control system with an Inverse Dynamics Model (IDM) tuned by a neural network was proposed. The system was designed to control the elbow joint angles by learning the characteristics of the neuromuscular system of controlled limbs. Three kinds of control schemes using the IDM were proposed. In a simulation experiment, the system was able to learn the abnormal characteristics of a limb and any changes in these characteristics, and

Superadditive effects of multiple lesions in a connectionist architecture: implications for the neuropsychology of optic aphasia.

Neuropsychological disorders have traditionally been understood in terms of a focal lesion to a single component of a cognitive architecture. Optic aphasia (OA) defies explanation in this way. In OA, naming of visual stimuli is impaired in the absence of general visual agnosia or anomia. OA has been explained by positing multiple semantic systems or multiple functional pathways to visual naming. M. J. Farah (1990) instead sketched a parsimonious account based on multiple lesions--to pathways mapping visual input to semantic and semantics to naming responses--and the assumption that the effects

Use of a neural network and a multiple regression model to predict histologic grade of astrocytoma from MRI appearances.

Several MRI features of supratentorial astrocytomas are associated with high histologic grade by statistically significant p values. We sought to apply this information prospectively to a group of astrocytomas in the prediction of tumor grade. We used 10 MRI features of fibrillary astrocytomas from 52 patient studies to develop neural network and multiple linear regression models for practical use in predicting tumor grade. The models were tested prospectively on MR images from 29 patients studies. The performance of the models was compared against that of a radiologist. Neural network accurac

A convolutional neural network for estimating synaptic connectivity from spike trains.

The recent increase in reliable, simultaneous high channel count extracellular recordings is exciting for physiologists and theoreticians because it offers the possibility of reconstructing the underlying neuronal circuits. We recently presented a method of inferring this circuit connectivity from neuronal spike trains by applying the generalized linear model to cross-correlograms. Although the algorithm can do a good job of circuit reconstruction, the parameters need to be carefully tuned for each individual dataset. Here we present another method using a Convolutional Neural Network for Esti

A neural geometry for forelimb proprioception in the cervical spinal cord.

Precise, real-time somatosensory feedback is essential for coordinated movement. While the anatomy and physiology of these sensory pathways is well described, their neural code and its construction remains unclear. Here we show that neurons in the cervical spinal cord generate a precise neural representation of the forelimb's kinematic state using muscle and tendon sensory afferent inputs. We identify two classes of movement responsive neurons - the first encodes speed, position and direction of the limb, while the second exhibits precise firing at specific limb positions or grid-like firing p

Predicting dice similarity coefficient of deformably registered contours using Siamese neural network.

Objective. Automatic deformable image registration (DIR) is a critical step in adaptive radiotherapy. Manually delineated organs-at-risk (OARs) contours on planning CT (pCT) scans are deformably registered onto daily cone-beam CT (CBCT) scans for delivered dose accumulation. However, evaluation of registered contours requires human assessment, which is time-consuming and subjects to high inter-observer variability. This work proposes a deep learning model that allows accurate prediction of Dice similarity coefficients (DSC) of registered contours in prostate radiotherapy.Approach. Our dataset

Computational and drug target analysis of functional single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with Haemoglobin Subunit Beta (HBB) gene.

There is overwhelming evidence implicating Haemoglobin Subunit Beta (HBB) protein in the onset of beta thalassaemia. In this study for the first time, we used a combined SNP informatics and computer algorithms such as Neural network, Bayesian network, and Support Vector Machine to identify deleterious non-synonymous Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (nsSNPs) present in the HBB gene. Our findings highlight three major mutation points (R31G, W38S, and Q128P) within the HBB gene sequence that have significant statistical and computational associations with the onset of beta thalassaemia. Fault-Tolerant Scheduling Mechanism for Dynamic Edge Computing Scenarios Based on Graph Reinforcement Learning.

With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and edge nodes, edge computing has taken on much of the real-time data processing and low-latency response tasks which were previously managed by cloud computing. However, edge computing often encounters challenges such as network instability and dynamic resource variations, which can lead to task interruptions or failures. To address these issues, developing a fault-tolerant scheduling mechanism is crucial to ensure that a system continues to operate efficiently even when some nodes experience failures. In this paper, we propose an in

GraftGIL-Net: A grafting framework on graph inductive learning networks for multi-label bird audio classification.

The automatic analysis of bird vocalizations holds significant promise for conservation monitoring, ecology, and vocal behavioural studies. Existing bird call classification methods face difficulties in detecting multiple overlapping bird vocalizations. To address this challenge, we propose GraftGIL-Net, a grafting framework based on graph inductive learning networks for bird call classification. Initially, a graph named Mel-Graph is created from the Mel-spectrogram of the audio file using a trained DeepConvNet model. This graph is then fed to the proposed GraftGIL-Net for classification. Denoising of Medical Ultrasound Images Using Variational Autoencoders Guided by Attention Mechanisms.

Ultrasound imaging, while widely used and clinically valuable, continues to face a major limitation, speckle noise. This type of noise interferes with the visibility of fine anatomical structures and can lower the clinician's diagnostic confidence. Traditional denoising methods often struggle to strike the right balance between effectively reducing noise and preserving essential image details. As a result, their usefulness in real-world, high-demand clinical settings remains limited. To address this ongoing challenge, we introduce a new denoising framework that combines large kernel attention

Accurate proteome-wide prediction of enzymes and catalytic sites using graph deep learning and protein language model.

Identifying the enzyme functions of proteins and their catalytic residues is vital to our understanding of diverse cellular processes. However, existing frameworks that can concurrently determine the enzymatic functions and active sites of proteins are scarce, and still have much room for improvement in prediction performance. In this study, we present EC-LMGraph, a protein language model- and graph convolutional network-based framework to predict enzyme commission (EC) numbers from protein sequence features and structures, and saliency mapping to score representative residues attribute to the
