Orthodontic space closure is one solution for partial agenesis. Custom-fit acrylic face frames formed directly on patients' faces can provide anchorage for protraction of teeth in patients who might otherwise require prosthetic teeth to avoid esthetically detrimental retraction of anterior teeth.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if any significant differences existed with regard to dental arch and facial asymmetries between persons having malocclusions with well-defined asymmetric characteristics, specifically Angle's Class II subdivision malocclusions, and persons having normal occlusions. Secondarily, it was sought to determine the nature of the differences that contributed to the asymmetric occlusal relationship of buccal segments observed in Class II subdivision malocclusions. The sample consisted of 28 subjects in each of the two groups. All possessed a full comp

By means of corrected tomography, the positions of the condyles in patients who had undergone four-premolar extraction treatment (20 edgewise and 7 Begg) were compared with the condylar positions of patients who had not yet received orthodontic treatment. No significant between-group differences in condylar position were noted. In addition, the relationship between bite depth and condylar position was examined and no significant correlation was found. Thus, as performed in this study, condylar position was unrelated to extraction treatment and to bite depth.

The present study deals with the morphometric changes in the loaded rat incisor and its supporting structures 3 months after load removal. The material examined was limited to that part of the tooth that is located between 8 and 20 mm from the tooth apex. Of the ten albino rats in whom laterointrusive loads (19 +/- 0.6 g) were applied to the lower left incisor for a period of 2 weeks, the rate of tooth eruption returned to normal in four animals (group A); in six rats, eruption remained grossly impaired (group B). These two groups were compared with a control group of four rats in whom the inc

The patient's opinion of himself greatly improved following correction of a disfiguring malocclusion. He experienced a marked personality change and increased self-esteem following correction of his malocclusion. Oral hygiene was much improved when the teeth became a source of pride rather than embarrassment. The chief concern of this patient was the appearance and alignment of crooked teeth. Facial balance and esthetics were improved following placement of anterior teeth over supporting bone and reduction of the bimaxillary dental protrusion. The temporomandibular joint is asymptomatic. Malocclusions can be successfully treated in the mixed dentition (Phase I), which can usually significantly reduce the need for comprehensive orthodontic treatment in the permanent dentition. Phase I of orthodontic treatment is designed to correct the skeletal and dental malocclusions at an early age. Treatment usually lasts for 12 to 20 months. Following Phase I treatment, there is a supervision phase of 18 to 30 months in which to hold the correction achieved during early treatment while supervising the eruption of the remaining permanent teeth. If a second phase of orthodontic treatment is

This study analyzes the need for and possibility of obtaining further information from different radiographic procedures in 125 children with potential ectopic eruption of the maxillary canines. After clinical examination of 3,000 10 to 15-year-old children, it was found that 7% needed radiographic examinations for determination of the canine position. Eighty-four children (2.8%), with a total of 125 potential ectopically erupting maxillary canines diagnosed clinically and by means of periapical radiographs, were selected and a stepwise extended radiographic diagnostic procedure was used. The literature on ectopically erupting first permanent molars is reviewed. The progression of the ectopic condition is discussed along with factors that will affect the practitioner's decision on a mode of treatment. The optimal treatment approach depends on the clinical eruption status of /6/, the change in position of /6/, the amount of enamel ledge of /E/ entrapping /6/, the mobility of /E/, and the presence of pain or infection. A variety of treatment approaches together with diagnostic rationale and clinical guidelines are presented. Overall aspects of the malocclusion must be considered

Lateral skull radiographs for a set of 31 human subjects were examined using computer-aided methods in an attempt to quantify modal trends of maxillary remodeling during the mixed dentition and adolescent growth periods. Cumulative changes in position of anterior nasal spine (ANS), posterior nasal spine (PNS), and Point A are reported at annual intervals relative to superimposition on previously placed maxillary metallic implants. This in vivo longitudinal study confirms at a high level of confidence earlier findings by Enlow, Björk, Melsen, and others to the effect that the superior surface o

The effect of professional prophylaxis on the periodontium was studied in 14 adolescent orthodontic patients while under active treatment using a split-mouth experimental design. A full-banded appliance was used on all of the patients. The following variables were examined: plaque registration, gingival index, gingival migration, and width of the attached gingiva. Professional rubber-cup prophylaxis was performed on the test side of all patients together with reinforced oral hygiene instruction on a monthly basis. Measurements for the plaque registration, gingival index, gingival migration, an

Lateral and posteroanterior cephalometric radiographs are used routinely in the diagnosis and quantification of dentofacial anomalies that require orthodontic treatment. The anatomic information that these films contain is occasionally overlooked as the clinician prepares tracings and makes measurements. With the increase of the average age of the orthodontic patient population, there is greater likelihood of the presence of disease. This article describes some important features of normal radiologic anatomy of the head and neck so that a clinician can better recognize pathologic changes. Comm

This study analyzed the effect of perennial allergic rhinitis on dental and facial skeletal characteristics. Twenty-five allergic children who were apparent mouth breathers, their 25 siblings who did not have the disease and were apparent nose breathers, and 14 nasal breathing control subjects were examined medically, dentally, and cephalometrically. Compared with their siblings, the allergic subjects had more nasal mucosal edema, a higher proportion of eosinophils in their nasal secretions, and greater nasal power. The allergic subjects were characterized by deeper palatal height, retroclined

The relationships between malocclusion and atopic diseases (familial allergy) and other usual predisposing factors were studied clinically and biometrically in a nonselected cohort of 217 7-year-old children. Normal Class I occlusion was more common in children with atopic respiratory symptoms than in nonatopic children. Posterior crossbites were found in children with atopic dermatitis (P less than 0.05), those with frequent infections (P less than 0.05), and in those sucking their fingers or a dummy beyond the age of 4 years (P less than 0.05) more often than in other children. Despite the almost universal agreement on the desirability of bone grafting in the cleft alveolar process, there are little long-term data to support preference for grafting at one time versus another. Investigation was undertaken to compare the clinical success of grafts placed at three distinct developmental stages: the "primary" group consisting of 20 rib grafts placed at less than 1 year of age; the "secondary" group consisting of 19 iliac crest grafts placed when the permanent canine was one fourth to one half formed; and the "delayed" group consisting of 18 iliac crest grafts placed afte

The interaction between airway and tongue structures in a sample of 25 adult men with obstructive sleep apnea was quantified on the basis of a series of preoperative CT slices obtained for each subject. Tracings were completed for tongue, and right and left nasal, nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx structures; computer graphics were used to obtain superior and lateral three-dimensional reconstructions of all structures for each subject. In addition, cross-sectional areas of specific sites of airway constriction, surface area, volume, and ratio calculations were completed. The majority of

The purpose of the study was to investigate whether root resorption of the upper incisors occurs during intrusion of maxillary incisors. It examines the possibility of a relationship between the amount of root shortening and duration of the intrusive force. The ratio of root length before and after intrusion was compared in 20 patients. In 66 incisors with an intrusion period of 29 weeks, an intrusion of 3.6 mm was performed. The control group consisted of 15 patients who underwent no orthodontic treatment. Consequently, 58 incisors had no intrusion. The follow-up time between 2 measurements w

The net treatment effect of or orthodontic or orthopedic therapy may be considered as the algebraic sum of all dentoalveolar, skeletal, and neuromuscular changes over time. Cumulative effects resulting from growth and adaptation in response to therapeutic biomechanical interference may be manipulated to result in clinically significant morphologic alterations in the growing child's dentition and craniofacial skeleton. All of the currently used functional appliances can be regarded as assemblies of a small number of component parts. This article attempts to identify these salient components and

Two groups of patients were selected from the State University Dental School in Ghent--an experimental group with tooth agenesis and a control group with complete dentitions. Skeletal anomalies were diagnosed by means of lateral cephalograms according to the Sassouni analysis. The amount of crowding was measured on standardized photographs by Little's Irregularity Index. The prevalence of Class I skeletal relationship appeared to be significantly higher in the agenesis group than in the control group. Skeletal deep- and normal-bite cases occurred more often in patients with hypodontia than in

The present work was undertaken to provide craniofacial roentgenocephalometric growth data on a group of patients with cleft lip ranging in age from infancy to 6 years. Included are variables related to the neurocranium and orbit. Mensurational data were derived from cephalograms of 72 patients (44 male and 28 female subjects) with cleft lip only (n = 38) or cleft lip with varying degrees of alveolar cleft (n = 34). The data in this mixed longitudinal sample are reported for ten age groups. On the basis of comparison with reported noncleft roentgenocephalometric values, it is suggested that th
