Reconstructive cranial surgery for invasive and non-responsive mucormycosis.

The incidence of mucormycosis showed a sharp rise during the COVID-19 pandemic in vulnerable populations like people with diabetes. Here, we report a case of mucormycosis of the frontal and ethmoid sinuses in a man in his mid-50s with a background of diabetes mellitus and COVID-19 infection requiring steroids and oxygen support. The infection had remained persistent despite initial debridement by functional endoscopic sinus surgery of the anterior frontal sinus wall and re-exploration, followed by debridement using the brow incision. The patient had received an entire course of systemic antifu

Artificial ovaries and the future of women's health: Shaping novel functions.

The advent of tissue engineering has revolutionized the development of organs and tissues, enabling the creation of three-dimensional structures that support cell proliferation and differentiation. This process, essential for organ transplantation, ensures biocompatibility, immunogenicity, and structural fidelity by preserving the extracellular matrix and its components, such as growth factors and signaling molecules. In the context of ovarian tissue engineering, the restoration of ovarian function presents a promising avenue for addressing conditions like ovarian insufficiency, which arises f

Sidewall Patterning in 3D Micro/Nanosystems: A Review.

Current micro/nanosystems mainly rely on a planar fabrication framework, where structures are built layer-by-layer on flat surfaces. This conventional approach leaves vertical sidewalls underutilized, posing geometric limits in packaging density, three-dimensional (3D) interconnects, and multi-surface functionalization. To overcome these constraints, sidewall patterning has emerged as a promising strategy, enabling 3D integrated circuits, templates for directed nanostructure synthesis, and microfluidic drag reduction. Nevertheless, traditional photolithography and non-photolithographic techniq

Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve Replacement in an Extra-Large RVOT Using a Custom-Made Pulmonary Valve.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement (TPVR) offers a less invasive alternative to surgical pulmonary valve replacement in patients with severe pulmonary regurgitation after tetralogy of Fallot repair. However, a complex right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) anatomy can prevent the use of conventional TPVR devices. CASE SUMMARY: We report a patient with tetralogy of Fallot and a hypoplastic left pulmonary artery who had undergone transannular patch repair and developed severe pulmonary regurgitation. Imaging revealed an excessively dilated, aneurysmal RVOT, precluding the use

[Congenital heart disease: Recent technical advances in three-dimensional echocardiography].

The recent technical advances allow the use in practice of three-dimensional echocardiography in children especially through the new high frequency matrix probe. It is difficult or even impossible to hold breathing during children' acquisition so to avoid motion full volume artifact, one beat and live 3D modes are suitable. 3D echocardiography is more accurate than 2D to assess the size, location, and relationship with surrounding structures of atrial and ventricular septal defects and thus helps in the therapeutic decision. 3D echocardiography enables to guide precisely percutaneous procedure

A spatiotemporally programmed bioactive scaffold for orbital reconstruction.

Orbital implants are widely used for post-enucleation reconstruction, but poor fibrovascularization and infection risk still limit their clinical performance. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D)-printed copper-doped hardystonite (HT, Ca2ZnSi2O7) scaffold with polar-graded porosity is developed for spatiotemporally programmed orbital reconstruction. By matching the intrinsic orbital regenerative trajectory, small pores promote early immunomodulation and reparative-cell recruitment, medium pores enhance angiogenic activation, and large pores facilitate vascular ingrowth and vascular-network assembl

Recurrence of a complex anterior skull base tumour managed with an uncommon surgical approach.

A well 74 -year-old woman presented to routine ophthalmology clinic instituted following treatment of a frontoethmoidal sarcoma initially excised in 1989 and diagnosed then as a sinus mucosal melanoma. At review in ophthalmology clinic, a reduction in right visual fields was noted. CT scan showed recurrence of a mass now involving the frontoethmoidal region, frontal sinus and abutting the cribiform plate. Endoscopic biopsy confirmed the recurrence as a low-grade biphenotypic sarcoma. This was discussed at the sarcoma multidisciplinary meeting. Using a three-dimensional printed model of the pat

Innovative 3D-Printed Devices with Modified Prednisolone Release for Colon-Targeted Drug Delivery Systems.

Background: Prednisolone conventional tablet is a drug commonly used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, the long-term use of high doses of prednisolone can lead to gastric irritation, risk of infection, and other systemic complications. These limitations of the drug can be overcome by using three-dimensional (3D) printing technology with pH-dependent approaches. Objectives: This study aimed to develop 3D-printed devices containing prednisolone tablets and gel with an enteric coating for colon-targeted modified release. Methods: 3D-printed drug-containing devices (CDDs) were de

Development of fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) phantom.

BACKGROUND: Anthropomorphic phantoms play an important role in routine clinical practice. They can be used to calibrate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, control the diagnostic equipment quality, and reduce the acquisition time. The latter is especially critical for diagnosing fetal anomalies, which requires optimal image quality within the shortest possible time. This paper aims to develop an MRI fetal phantom and determine the materials that best mimic the magnetic resonance (MR) characteristics of its internal organs. Future phantom features will include simulations of fetal limb m

Biofabrication of biomimetic undulating microtopography at the dermal-epidermal junction and its effects on the growth and differentiation of epidermal cells.

The undulating microtopography located at the junction of the dermis and epidermis of the native skin is called rete ridges (RRs), which plays an important role in enhancing keratinocyte function, improving skin structure and stability, and providing three-dimensional (3D) microenvironment for skin cells. Despite some progress in recent years, most currently designed and manufactured tissue-engineered skin models still cannot replicate the RRs, resulting in a lack of biological signals in the manufactured skin models. In this study, a composite manufacturing method including electrospinning, 3

Use of Customized 3D-Printed Titanium Augment With Tantalum Trabecular Cup for Large Acetabular Bone Defects in Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Midterm Follow-Up Study.

Aims: In revision total hip arthroplasty (THA), large acetabular bone defects pose challenges for surgeons. Recently, wide application of trabecular tantalum, which has outstanding biocompatibility and mechanical properties, and the development of three-dimensional (3D) printing have led to the introduction of new schemes for acetabular reconstruction. However, few studies have focused on the treatment of bone defects with customized 3D-printed titanium augments combined with tantalum trabecular cup. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the effect of this therapy in patients who underwent revision THAs.

Mechanical Properties and a Constitutive Model of 3D-Printed Copper Powder-Filled PLA Material.

Three-dimensional printing is becoming increasingly popular because of its extensive applicability. However, printing materials remain limited. To determine the mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) and copper powder-filled polylactic acid (PLA-Cu) materials subjected to static and dynamic loading, stress-strain curves were obtained under the conditions of different strain rates using a universal material testing machine and a separated Hopkinson pressure bar experimental device. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the micro-morphology of the quasi-static compressio

Chemical Polishing of Additively Manufactured, Porous, Nickel-Titanium Skeletal Fixation Plates.

Nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloys have shown promise for a variety of biomedical applications because of their unique properties of shape memory, superelasticity, and low modulus of elasticity (Young's modulus). Nevertheless, NiTi bulk components cannot be easily machined (e.g., CNC, rolling, grinding, casting, or press molding) due to their thermomechanical sensitivity as well as inherent superelasticity and shape memory. Thus, powder bed fusion (PBF) additive manufacturing has been used to successfully fabricate NiTi medical devices that match the geometric and mechanical needs of a particular p

A 3D printed C-shape external airway splint composite skin flap for tracheal reconstruction: State-of-the-art masterclass.

BACKGROUND: Repair of long-segment tracheal defects remains a challenge worldwide. In this study, we proposed a new strategy for tracheal reconstruction and verified the feasibility of this strategy in a canine model of tracheal defects. METHODS: An external airway splint was designed and fabricated using three-dimensional (3D) printing. The skin flap was rotated as a tube and suspended by an external airway splint to construct tracheal substitutes. In vitro, the tracheal substitutes were tested under a negative pressure gradient (-10 mmHg, -20 mmHg, and -30 mmHg). In vivo, nine canines condu

Smart hydrogel surface patterning: From static structures to programmable interfaces.

Hydrogels, as three-dimensional hydrophilic polymeric networks, present outstanding biocompatibility, tunable mechanics, and sensitive stimuli responsiveness, but conventional homogeneous hydrogels fail to meet the demand for multifunctional integration in advanced applications. Surface patterning provides a powerful approach to precisely engineer interfacial structures, chemical distributions, and dynamic responsive behaviors. This review systematically classifies hydrogel surface patterning into top-down techniques (photolithography, templating, printing, stimulus-response writing) and botto
