Effects of temperature and PM2.5 on the incidence of hand, foot, and mouth in a heavily polluted area, Shijiazhuang, China.

The influence of weather and air pollution factors on hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has received widespread attention. However, most of the existing studies came from lightly polluted areas and the results were inconsistent. There was a lack of relevant evidence of heavily polluted areas. This study aims to quantify the relationship between weather factors and air pollution with HFMD in heavily polluted areas. We collected the daily number of hand, foot, and mouth disease in Shijiazhuang, China from 2014 to 2018, as well as meteorological and air pollutant data over the same period. The

Prevalence of cranial trauma in Eurasian Upper Paleolithic humans.

OBJECTIVES: This study characterizes patterns of cranial trauma prevalence in a large sample of Upper Paleolithic (UP) fossil specimens (40,000-10,000 BP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our sample comprised 234 individual crania (specimens), representing 1,285 cranial bones (skeletal elements), from 101 Eurasian UP sites. We used generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) to assess trauma prevalence in relation to age-at-death, sex, anatomical distribution, and between pre- and post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) samples, while accounting for skeletal preservation. RESULTS: Models predicted a mean cranial

Effect of El Niño Southern Oscillation cycle on the potential distribution of cutaneous leishmaniasis vector species in Colombia.

Local anomalies in rainfall and temperature induced by El Niño and La Niña episodes could change the structure of the vector community. We aimed to estimate the effect of the El Niño-La Niña cycle in the potential distribution of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) vector species in Colombia and to compare the richness of the vectors with the occurrence of CL in the state of Norte de Santander. The potential distributions of four species were modeled using a MaxEnt algorithm for the following episodes: La Niña 2010-2011, Neutral 2012-2015 and El Niño 2015-2016. The relationship between the potential

Association between ambient temperature and injury by intentions and mechanisms: A case-crossover design with a distributed lag nonlinear model.

Although injury is a leading cause of death worldwide, the association between ambient temperature and injury has received little research attention compared to the association of temperature with mortality and morbidity from non-external causes. With current climate change and increases in weather extremes, assessing the association between temperature and injury is important for determining public health priorities. Therefore, the present study examined the association between ambient temperature and injury risk with a focus on the intentions and mechanisms of injury. Using the national emer

The portfolio effect cushions mosquito populations and malaria transmission against vector control interventions.

BACKGROUND: Portfolio effects were first described as a basis for mitigating against financial risk by diversifying investments. Distributing investment across several different assets can stabilize returns and reduce risks by statistical averaging of individual asset dynamics that often correlate weakly or negatively with each other. The same simple probability theory is equally applicable to complex ecosystems, in which biological and environmental diversity stabilizes ecosystems against natural and human-mediated perturbations. Given the fundamental limitations to how well the full complexi

Mapping the distribution of tick-borne encephalitis in mainland China.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) has become an increasing public health threat in recent years, ranging from Europe, through far-eastern Russia to Japan and northern China. However, the neglect of its expansion and scarce analyses of the dynamics have made the overall disease burden and the risk distribution of the disease being unclear in mainland China. In this study, we described epidemiological characteristics of 2117 reported human TBE cases from 2006 to 2013 in mainland China. About 99% of the cases were reported in forest areas of northeastern China, and 93% of reported infections occurred

Mapping the Distribution of Anthrax in Mainland China, 2005-2013.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax, a global re-emerging zoonotic disease in recent years is enzootic in mainland China. Despite its significance to the public health, spatiotemporal distributions of the disease in human and livestock and its potential driving factors remain poorly understood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using the national surveillance data of human and livestock anthrax from 2005 to 2013, we conducted a retrospective epidemiological study and risk assessment of anthrax in mainland China. The potential determinants for the temporal and spatial distributions of human anthrax were also ex

Cost-utility analysis of dengue vaccination in a country with heterogeneous risk of dengue transmission.

BACKGROUND: Dengue is one of the most important vector-borne diseases worldwide, and annually, nearly 390 million people are infected and 500,000 patients are hospitalized for severe dengue. Argentina has great variability in the risk of dengue transmission due to eco-climatic reasons. Currently no vaccines are available for dengue even though several vaccines are under development. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to estimate the cost-effectiveness of a dengue vaccine in a country with heterogeneous risk of dengue transmission like Argentina. METHODS: The analysis was carried out from a

Epidemiology of visceral leishmaniasis.

Leishmania species are the causative agents of leishmaniasis, a neglected tropical disease. These parasitic protozoans are usually transmitted between vertebrate hosts by the bite of blood sucking female phlebotomine sand flies. This review focuses on the two parasites causing most human visceral leishmaniasis (VL), which leads to substantial health problems or death for up to 400,000 people per year. Except for travel cases, Leishmania donovani infections are restricted to the (sub-)tropics of Asia and Africa, where transmission is mostly anthroponotic, while Leishmania infantum occurs in the

Factors associated with the development of panic attack and panic disorder: survey in the Japanese population.

Environmental factors, in addition to genetic factors, may be related to the development of panic attack (PA) and panic disorder (PD). Previous studies suggested that there may be seasonal variation in the onset of PA/PD and possibly a higher prevalence of PA/PD in colder areas. Also observed were lactate-induced PA and elevated serum cholesterol in PD patients. These suggest that living environment and lifestyle, such as weather conditions, preference of food and physical exercise, might play a role in the occurrence of PA and PD. The present study explored the association of such candidate f

Towards a thermodynamic mechanistic model for the effect of temperature on arthropod vector competence for transmission of arboviruses.

Arboviruses such as West Nile virus (WNV), bluetongue virus (BTV), dengue virus (DENV) and chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infect their arthropod vectors over a range of average temperatures depending on the ambient temperature. How the transmission efficiency of an arbovirus (i.e. vector competence) varies with temperature influences not only the short term risk of arbovirus outbreaks in humans and livestock but also the long term impact of climate change on the geographical range of the virus. The strength of the interaction between viral surface (glyco)protein (GP) and the host cell receptor (Cr)

Thermographic assessment of surface temperature distribution and agreement between a thermographic camera, infrared thermometer, and rectal temperature in exercising horses under tropical climate conditions.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Infrared thermography has become an increasingly valuable non-invasive imaging technique for monitoring physiological status and detecting abnormalities in horses. However, its application under tropical environmental conditions remains insufficiently investigated, particularly regarding the influence of ambient conditions on measurement accuracy and agreement with conventional temperature assessment methods. This study aimed to evaluate the agreement among a thermographic camera (TC), infrared thermometer (IR), and rectal temperature (RT), characterize body surface tempera

Comparative analysis reveals distinct microbial community profiles and assembly mechanisms in sediments of coastal wetland ecosystems.

UNLABELLED: Coastal wetland ecosystems (CWEs), including mangroves, saltmarshes, and seagrasses, support vital biogeochemical cycles mediated by microbes, yet their global microbial diversity, distribution, and potential functions remain elusive. Thus, we analyzed 1,381 16S rRNA gene amplicon data sets targeting the V3-V4 and V4 regions to examine microbial diversity and assembly processes across these habitats. Results revealed significant differences in microbial diversity and composition among these ecosystems, with mangroves exhibiting the highest richness and diversity. The habitat-specif

How do we sleep while our beds are burning? High ambient temperatures are associated with substantial sleep loss.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: High ambient temperatures are associated with negative health outcomes, including heat stress, injuries and accidents, and poor mental health. Sleep loss may contribute to these adverse impacts. However, robust supporting evidence is lacking. METHODS: Data from a global sample of sleep tracker users (N = 317 758; Withings Sleep Analyzer [WSA]: n = 116 879; Withings ScanWatch: n = 200 879) between January 2020 and September 2023 (~165 million nights) were analyzed. Ambient temperatures (24 hour average) were extracted from a climate model for each nightly observation based on

Disentangling the environmental processes responsible for the world's largest farmed fish-killing harmful algal bloom: Chile, 2016.

The dictyochophyte microalga Pseudochattonella verruculosa was responsible for the largest farmed fish mortality ever recorded in the world, with losses for the Chilean salmon industry amounting to US$ 800 M in austral summer 2016. Super-scale climatic anomalies resulted in strong vertical water column stratification that stimulated development of a dynamic P. verruculosa thin layer (up to 38 μg chl a L-1) for several weeks in Reloncaví Sound. Hydrodynamic modeling (MIKE 3D) indicated that the Sound had extremely low flushing rates (between 121 and 200 days) in summer 2016. Reported algal cell

Translating biotechnology to knowledge-based innovation, peace, and development? Deploy a Science Peace Corps--an open letter to world leaders.

Scholarship knows no geographical boundaries. This science diplomacy and biotechnology journalism article introduces an original concept and policy petition to innovate the global translational science, a Science Peace Corps. Service at the new Corps could entail volunteer work for a minimum of 6 weeks, and up to a maximum of 2 years, for translational research in any region of the world to build capacity manifestly for development and peace, instead of the narrow bench-to-bedside model of life science translation. Topics for translational research are envisioned to include all fields of life

Towards a low carbon ASEAN: an environmentally extended MRIO optimization model.

BACKGROUND: Economic growth is dependent on economic activity, which often translates to higher levels of carbon emissions. With the emergence of technologies that promote sustainable production, governments are working towards achieving their target economic growth while minimizing environmental emissions to meet their commitments to the international community. The IPCC reports that economic activities associated with electricity and heat production contributed most to GHG emissions and it led to the steady increase in global average temperatures. Currently, more than 90% of the total GHG em

Heterogeneous impacts for malaria control from larviciding across villages and considerations for monitoring and evaluation.

Malaria vector control tools currently focus on insecticide treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying in malaria-endemic locations, but additional preventative strategies are needed to address protection gaps. Larval source management (LSM) includes larvicide application to aquatic habitat and an array of alternative forms of environmental efforts. An individual-based transmission model for falciparum malaria is used to demonstrate the theoretical benefit of suppressing malaria adult mosquito vector densities through LSM. The model simulates results of epidemiological trials from Wester

Institutional quality, aid flows, and malaria burden: a geospatial analysis of sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for approximately 95 percent of global malaria deaths despite extensive interventions. Significant disparities persist in disease burden across countries, with some achieving remarkable progress while others experiencing persistently high transmission rates, suggesting factors beyond resource availability influence disease control effectiveness. This study examines the relationship between institutional quality, development aid flows, and malaria burden across 38 sub-Saharan African countries during 2
