Thresholds for the detection of temporal gaps were measured using two types of signals to mark the gaps: bandpass-filtered noises and sinusoids. The first experiment used seven subjects with relatively flat unilateral moderate cochlear hearing loss. The normal ear of each subject was tested both at the same sound-pressure level (SPL) as the impaired ear, and at the same sensation level (SL). Background noise was used to mask spectral "splatter" associated with the gap. For the noise markers, gap thresholds tended to be larger for the impaired ears than for the normal ears when the comparison w

BACKGROUND: Intratympanic injections of glucocorticoids have become increasingly common in the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural … ction to the implant. In patients where the basal part of scala tympani was assessable during later cochlear implantation, no pathological findings were found. In the patients with extracochlear application, average preoperative PTA was 84.7 dB HL (SD: 20.0) and 76.7 dB HL (SD: 16.7) at follow-up (p = 0.08). The preoperative average maximum WRS was 14.6% (SD: 17.9) and …

Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi A, remains endemic in Nepal. Typhoid fever can affect nearly all systems of the body, leading to various complications; however, sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) remains an exceptionally rare occurrence. This case report describes a 24-year-old female school teacher who presented with an 8-day history of fever, followed by a 6-day history of bilateral hearing loss and tinnitus. She was diagnosed with typhoid fever based on a positive Widal test and was treated with intravenous antibiotics, antipyretics, and oral steroids, but

In the last 15 years, optogenetics has revolutionized the life sciences and enabled studies of complex biological systems such as the brain. Applying optogenetics also has great potential for restorative medicine, such as hearing restoration, by stimulating genetically modified spiral ganglion neurons of the cochlea with light. To this end, opsins with short closing kinetics are required, given the high firing rates and utmost temporal precision of spiking in these neurons. Chronos is the fastest native blue channelrhodopsin (ChR) reported so far with a closing kinetics bellow 1 ms at body tem

Waardenburg syndrome (WS), also known as auditory-pigmentary syndrome, is the most common cause of syndromic hearing loss (HL), which accounts for approximately 2-5% of all patients with congenital hearing loss. WS is classified into four subtypes depending on the clinical phenotypes. Currently, pathogenic mutations of PAX3, MITF, SOX10, EDN3, EDNRB or SNAI2 are associated with different subtypes of WS. Although supportive techniques like hearing aids, cochlear implants, or other assistive listening devices can alleviate the HL symptom, there is no cure for WS to date. Recently major progress

Usher syndrome has three subtypes, each being clinically and genetically heterogeneous characterised by sensorineural hearing loss and retinitis pigmentosa (RP), with or without vestibular dysfunction. It is the most common cause of deaf-blindness worldwide with a prevalence of between 4 and 17 in 100 000. To date, 10 causative genes have been identified for Usher syndrome, with MYO7A accounting for >50% of type 1 and USH2A contributing to approximately 80% of type 2 Usher syndrome. Variants in these genes can also cause non-syndromic RP and deafness. Genotype-phenotype correlations have been

The lack of an appropriately trained global hearing-care workforce is recognized as a barrier to developing and implementing services to treat ear and hearing disorders. In this article we examine some of the published literature on the current global workforce for ear and hearing care. We outline the status of both the primary-care workforce, including community health workers, and specialist services, including audiologists, ear, nose and throat specialists, speech and language therapists, and teachers of the deaf. We discuss models of training health workers in ear and hearing care, includi

BACKGROUND: Current imaging modalities enable early diagnosis of a large number of small acoustic neuromas in patients with well-preserved hearing, whose best management is still a debatable matter.
METHODS: Comparing the hearing outcome of the various therapeutical approaches, including observation, radiosurgery, or resective surgery, is not easy because of the numerous classifications measuring hearing in different ways. In this review, a literature review was performed and papers selected dealing with small tumors, short- and long-term hearing, tumor control or radical resection, and effec

Auditory brainstem implant (ABI) technology attempts to restore hearing in deaf patients caused by bilateral cochlear nerve injury through the direct stimulation of the brainstem, but many aspects of the related mechanisms remain unknown. The unresolved issues can be grouped into three topics: which patients are the best candidates; which type of electrode should be used; and how to improve restored hearing. We evaluated our experience with 11 cases of ABI placement. We found that if at least seven of eleven electrodes of the MED-EL ABI are effectively placed in a patient with no deformation o

Presentations in this symposium are considered in the context of mechanisms of sensory plasticity, particularly in the auditory system. The auditory nervous system has two discrete end organs that are separately vulnerable to clinical and experimental injury, and brainstem processing mechanisms that are highly specialized for temporal, spectral, and spatial coding. These include giant axo-somatic synapses and neurons with spatially segregated bipolar dendrites, each innervated exclusively from one ear. This architecture allows exquisite control of afferent-target interactions, including known

The etiology of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) in children may be viral. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the role of viral infectious agents in children with idiopathic SNHL. Of 119 children with SNHL aged 3-168 months undergoing cochlear implant surgery at a hospital in Tehran, no cause could be established in 18 cases (15.1%). Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) active infections (detected by DNA-PCR, confirmed by serology) were found in the perilymphatic fluid of 16.7% (3/18) cases of idiopathic SNHL. Serology was performed on blood samples from 11 of these

Two profoundly hard-of-hearing and deaf patients were examined by non-invasive extracranial magnetic stimulation (EMS) in an effort to determine whether EMS could evoke auditory sensations. The patients were fitted with standard earplugs and were stimulated at the auricle, the mastoid and the temporal lobe area. The threshold of auditory sensation (TAS) was determined at each stimulus position and found to be approximately 20-40% of the maximum EMS level (2.0 Tesla). The TAS was generally lowest in mastoid stimulation, but was variable, and dependent on the angle and position of the stimulatin

The repair of 1 mm drill hole lesions in rabbit long bones and otic capsules was studied in undecalcified sections. Following surgery, bone formation was monitored during 12 weeks by intravital sequential time labeling with bone-seeking fluorochromes. In diaphyseal bone, initial repair by trabecular woven bone was accompanied by a transient remodeling response in primary repair bone and the surrounding compacta. In comparison, capsular defects showed a slightly deficient initial repair by woven bone which, once formed, persisted unchanged with no subsequent osteonal remodeling. In the surround

A well known fact and an established experience in all audiological units, handling large groups of hearing loss patients is, that in many of them (15% or more?) - mostly having severe, but occasionally moderate hearing loss - the conventional audiological rehabilitation programme (hearing aids, special devices, functional training etc.) cannot adequately compensate for their communication handicap, i.e. they constitute problem cases, and consequently also a challenge to research. This experience gained through many years, but certainly also, in addition, the cochlear implant discussion during

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate potential effects of age on the ability of normal-hearing (NH) adult listeners to utilize spectral and temporal cues when performing a voice gender identification task.
DESIGN: Ten younger and 10 older NH adult listeners were measured on their ability to correctly identify the speaker gender of six different vowel tokens (H-/vowel/-D) when spoken by eight speakers (four male and four female). Spectral (number of channels) and temporal cues (low-pass cut-off frequency for temporal envelope extraction) were systematically manipulated using noi

Treating individuals with single-sided deafness (SSD) with a cochlear implant (CI) offers significant benefits for speech perception in complex spatial listening environments. After implantation, training without involvement of the normal-hearing ear is essential. Therefore, the AudioLink streaming device (MED-EL GmbH, Austria) can be used to connect the externally worn audio processor to media devices; thus, the auditory stimuli are directly streamed to the implanted ear. The aim was to test whether children with SSD, aged 5-12 years, accept this training method and whether auditory training,
