Hybrid deep ensemble architecture for robust diabetic retinopathy classification: leveraging transfer learning and CNN-transformer synergy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is still one of the main reasons for vision loss worldwide, especially in places where people do not have easy access to regular eye checkups. Early and accurate disease detection is important to avoid permanent damage, but traditional methods are slow and sometimes inconsistent. This study proposes a deep learning framework that combines convolutional neural networks (CNNs), vision transformers, transfer learning, and ensemble techniques to improve DR detection. We used the APTOS 2019 dataset and tested the capabilities of 23 different pre-trained models. Then, we fi

Physics-informed neural ordinary differential equations for PBPK-based internal dose prediction in environmental health risk assessment.

Reliable prediction of internal doses, especially systemic blood concentrations, is crucial for exposure science and environmental health risk assessment. While traditional physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models provide mechanistic insights, their fixed parameters often fail to capture nonlinear dynamics at high concentrations, as encountered in acute contamination scenarios. This study introduces a hybrid PBPK-constrained neural ODE framework that combines neural ordinary differential equations with PBPK modeling. By integrating a minimal two-neuron network correction at the live

Insights into motor control: predict muscle activity from upper limb kinematics with LSTM networks.

This study explores the relationship between upper limb kinematics and corresponding muscle activity, aiming to understand how predictive models can approximate motor control. We employ a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network trained on kinematic end effector data to estimate muscle activity for eight muscles. The model exhibits strong predictive accuracy for new repetitions of known movements and generalizes to unseen movements, suggesting it captures underlying biomechanical principles rather than merely memorizing patterns. This generalization is particularly valuable for applications in re

Predicting the tabletability of binary mixtures from individual powder compaction behavior.

Successful development of direct-compression formulations can be hindered by poor compactibility of active pharmaceutical ingredients active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), necessitating rational formulation strategies. This work presents a neural network model trained on a large tableting dataset comprising over 200 formulations prepared from 33 powders, including 17 APIs, to predict tablet tensile strength across the full compaction pressure range directly from material properties and formulation composition for binary mixtures. The predictive accuracy of the neural network model was comp

Normalizing flow based neural processes for Alzheimer's disease progression prediction.

As one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's accounts for serious health problems worldwide. Accurate detection and prediction of this disease contribute to the health system for better prevention and interventions in the treatment plans. However, traditional models designed for prediction and classification face several challenges, including handling complex data, which neglects many data points for the diagnosis. To overcome this challenge, we propose a novel model based on the integration of Neural Processes (NPs) and Normalizing Flows (NFs). The dataset used for this s

EIGNN: An Explainable Imaging-Genetic Neural Network for Robust Alzheimer's Disease Risk Prediction.

Accurate risk prediction and early diagnosis are crucial for the early intervention of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Current prediction models usually have limited power in capturing the complex interplays between the heterogeneous inputs or lack biological explainability required for clinical adoption and new diagnosis biomarkers discovery. Inspired by pioneering works on biologically informed network and multi-modal learning, we presented an Explainable Imaging-Genetic Neural Network (EIGNN), integrating genetic and neuroimaging data to generate accurate, robust, and explainable AD risk predicti

Robust adaptive fault-tolerant learning control for human height-weight prediction based on DNN.

In this paper, a distributed robust adaptive confined fault-tolerant optimal control method based on deep neural networks is proposed, aiming to solve the complexity and uncertainty problems in human height and weight prediction. Note that the term 'control' in this work refers to feedback regulation of the iterative learning/optimization dynamics of the predictor (iteration domain), rather than controlling the physical time evolution of human height/weight. In the field of public security technology, accurate prediction of individual physiological characteristics has important application val

Object Detection, Recognition, Deep Learning, and the Universal Law of Generalization.

Object detection and recognition are fundamental functions that play a significant role in the success of species. Because the appearance of an object exhibits large variability, the brain has to group these different stimuli under the same object identity, a process of generalization. Does the process of generalization follow some general principles, or is it an ad hoc bag of tricks? The universal law of generalization (ULoG) provides evidence that generalization follows similar properties across a variety of species and tasks. Here, we tested the hypothesis derived from ULoG that the interna

A Deep Learning Framework for Automated Triage of Breast Cancer Biopsies in Malaysia: A Simulation Study to Reduce Resource Consumption and Diagnostic Turnaround Time.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is a major health burden in Malaysia, where a shortage of pathologists causes long diagnostic delays, patient anxiety, and late treatment. Conventional histopathology workflows use a first-in-first-out (FIFO) system, which is inefficient since most biopsies are benign. This simulation-based study developed and validated a deep learning triage system to prioritize suspicious breast biopsy cases for pathologist review. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A convolutional neural network was trained on a large, ethically sourced synthetic dataset of whole-slide images, labelled as ben

BC-SwinNet: Swin transformer and CNN with multi-objective optimization for multi-class breast cancer detection using Histopathological images.

Breast cancer remains a major global health concern and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. It is estimated that by 2030, its incidence and mortality rates will rise due to population growth, aging, and lifestyle changes. Although histopathological examination is considered the gold standard for diagnosis, manual assessment is often time-consuming, subjective, and-particularly in the case of complex, multidimensional cancer classifications-prone to inter-observer variability. These limitations underscore the need for accurate, automated, and computationally eff

Enhancing Machine-Learned Electrostatic Models with Linear Response Theory for Multiscale Simulations in Enzymes.

To accelerate computationally expensive quantum mechanical (QM) calculations, integrating machine learning potentials (MLPs) with molecular mechanics (MM) has become a promising approach, which can be employed to perform multiscale ML/MM-MD simulations and estimate reaction free energy for enzymatic catalysis. However, the ML/MM frameworks face the challenge of intuitive chemical interpretability in QM/MM electrostatic coupling, which limits their transferability in unlearned MM environments. Therefore, their practical application in enzyme engineering is hindered by the bottleneck of MLP retr

A clinically interpretable deep learning pipeline for diabetic retinopathy classification using EfficientNet, advanced data augmentation and GradCAM.

BACKGROUND: Early and reliable grading of diabetic retinopathy is important for preventing avoidable vision loss. Although deep learning methods have shown strong performance on retinal fundus images, grading remains difficult because of class imbalance, variable image quality, subtle differences between adjacent disease stages, and the need for interpretable predictions. This study developed a clinically interpretable deep learning pipeline for five-class diabetic retinopathy grading. METHODS: A classification framework based on EfficientNet-B1 was developed using contrast-limited adaptive h

A multi-stage deep learning network for prenatal diagnosis of coarctation of the aorta.

BACKGROUND: Coarctation of the aorta (CoA) is a common congenital cardiovascular disorder. Severe cases may cause neonatal shock or heart failure. Accurate prenatal diagnosis is critical to reducing mortality and enabling timely medical intervention. Fetal echocardiography is widely used for prenatal CoA detection, but its diagnostic performance is limited by relatively high false-positive and false-negative rates. Recent advances have proposed deep learning to assist diagnosis. However, current approaches struggle to extract meaningful features from the complex distributions of fetal echocard

Exploring NPM1P51 as a key biomarker for glaucoma by integrating differential gene expression analysis and artificial neural network models.

Glaucoma is a group of optic neuropathic conditions in which the progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGC) occurs, ultimately leading to irreversible vision loss. Despite our understanding of pathophysiology, potential biomarkers and early detection are still very limited. Hence, there is an urgent need to find the potent molecular biomarker of Glaucoma so that early diagnosis and personalised glaucoma treatment can be possible. In this study, we performed comparative transcriptomic analyses to discern differentially expressed genes (DEGs) linked with Glaucoma. The aim is to fin

ScaHybNet: a scalogram-based hybrid ensemble network for ECG arrhythmia classification.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the world, requiring the accurate and timely detection of arrhythmias to prevent sudden cardiac death. In this work, ScaHybNet, a deep learning ensemble model is proposed for multi-class arrhythmia classification using the widely adopted ECG Heartbeat Categorization Dataset. The dataset comprises 109,446 samples across five heartbeat classes (N, S, V, F, Q), enabling comprehensive arrhythmia analysis. The proposed method first transforms the ECG signals to 224 × 224 RGB-scalogram images using CWT with the Morlet wavelet. Then, a hybrid

rbpCNN: a biophysics-informed deep learning model for predicting piRNA and mRNA interactions.

Predicting the interactions between piRNA sequences and mRNA sequences is central to understanding post-transcriptional regulation in the germline and to the design of perturbations that modulate PIWI (P-element-induced wimpy testis) guided silencing. Any improvement in the accuracy of predictions about RNA sequence interactions is vital to the enhancements that can be made in many critical medical fields. This paper proposes rbpCNN, a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) that augments nucleotide-pair encoding with biophysically motivated interaction channels prior to learning. By ad
