Behavioral, Cognitive and Neural Markers of Asperger Syndrome.

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a subtype of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) characterized by major problems in social and nonverbal communication, together with limited and repetitive forms of behavior and interests. The linguistic and cognitive development in AS is preserved which help us to differentiate it from other subtypes of ASD. However, significant effects of AS on cognitive abilities and brain functions still need to be researched. Although a clear cut pathology for Asperger has not been identified yet, recent studies have largely focused on brain imaging techniques to investigate AS. In t

Can we talk? Fostering interchange between scientists and practitioners.

In response to three surveys of (mostly) cognitive-behavioral practitioners about barriers to treatment success with cognitive-behavioral therapy for patients with generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social phobia (McAleavey, Castonguay, & Goldfried, 2014-this issue; Szkodny, Newman, & Goldfried, 2014-this issue; Wolf & Goldfried, 2014-this issue), the author proposes several methods for tapping clinical expertise in the development and dissemination of psychological interventions. These include: following surveys with interviews of a subset of clinicians to obtain richer informa

Are antiepileptic drugs used in the treatment of migraine associated with an increased risk of suicidality?

Three antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), valproic acid, gabapentin, and topiramate (TPM), are used frequently in the prophylactic treatment of migraines. In December 2008, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning suggesting that the use of all AEDs is associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation and behavior. This warning has been received by the medical community with great skepticism, and the validity of the findings of the meta-analysis that led to its publication has been questioned because of various methodological problems. Yet, migraine by itself is associated with an inc

Behavioral and social sciences at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Critical disciplines for public health.

The mission of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is to promote health and quality of life by preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Fifty years ago, CDC's efforts were focused on epidemiologic and laboratory studies of malaria, typhus, and plague. Today, CDC's activities cover a broad range of diseases and conditions, and a broader range of disciplines are required to address these diverse public health problems. The behavioral and social sciences have a critical role to play in helping the public understand risk group characteristics and the frequency,

[Psychological factors in hypertension].

We briefly overview behavioral factors of possible relevance to essential hypertension. We examine, in particular, dimensions of individual differences relating to: (a) problems of anger and assertion; and (b) cardiovascular responsivity to behavioral stressors. Hypertensive patients do show larger cardiovascular reactions to common laboratory stressors than normotensive, controls, and similar differences emerge in comparisons of normotensive individuals with and without a family history of hypertension. Concerning the purported dispositional attributes of hypertensives, we also propose re-exa

Sleep in Individuals with ADHD: Prevalence, Impacts, Causes, and Treatments.

Sleep problems are common in children and adolescents with ADHD. This chapter covers the basics of sleep and the prevalence and types of sleep problems experienced by children and adolescents with ADHD. The impacts of sleep problems on the day-to-day lives of children with ADHD and their families are covered including impacts on child daily functioning and cognition, as well as family well-being. There is no one cause of sleep problems in children with ADHD with both biological and environmental factors implicated. There are a small number of randomized controlled trials that support the effic

Governing the global commons with local institutions.

Most problems faced by modern human society have two characteristics in common--they are tragedy-of-the-commons type of problems, and they are global problems. Tragedy-of-the-commons type of problems are those where a commonly shared resource is overexploited by free riders at the expense of everyone sharing the resource. The exploitation of global resources such as clean air and water, political stability and peace, etc. underlies many of the most pressing human problems. Punishment of free riding behavior is one of the most frequently used strategies to combat the problem, but the spatial re

[Diagnosis and care of senile sexual problems].

By aging process, sexual behaviors of elderly people may change. Some changes are normal ones, but may be misunderstood as abnormal by prejudice and ignorance of the senile sexuality. As the sexual function of elderly people is influenced by many factors, evaluation of it should include physical, pharmacological, psychological, and partner relational aspects. By using drug, some sexual dysfunctions may be improved. But treatment should not be focused only on penile-vaginal intercourse. Kissing, touching and other alternative sexual behaviors may be useful for the improvement of the senile sexu

Getting off the fence: procedures to engage treatment-resistant drinkers.

Historically there have been few options for individuals seeking help for treatment-resistant loved ones with substance abuse problems. This article describes a program with empirical backing called Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT). This cognitive-behavioral treatment teaches the concerned significant other how to use behavioral principles to reduce the loved one's drinking and to encourage the drinker to seek treatment. Additionally it assists the concerned significant other in alleviating other types of stress and in introducing meaningful reinforcers into his or her own l

Maternal Tobacco Smoking During Pregnancy and Children's Emotional and Behavioral Trajectories: The EDEN Mother-Child Birth Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: The nature of the relationship between maternal tobacco smoking during pregnancy and the occurrence of children's behavioral problems is still a matter of controversy. We tested this association using data collected among a sample of pregnant women and their offspring followed up from birth to early adolescence (age 12 years), accounting for multiple parent, child, and family characteristics. AIMS AND METHODS: Data come from 1424 mother-child pairs participating in the Étude des Déterminants pré et post-natals précoces du développement psychomoteur et de la santé de l'ENfant mot

Predictors of Problem Gambling for Sports and Non-sports Gamblers: A Stochastic Search Variable Selection Analysis.

Differences in the psychological characteristics and gambling behaviors of sports bettors and non-sports bettors were examined with a view to identifying predictors of problem gambling severity. A survey was completed by 1,280 participants, 596 of whom had placed bets on a sporting event in the last year. We found that sports bettors are at greater risk of problem gambling due to differences in attitudes towards gambling, personality traits, thinking styles, erroneous cognitions, and gambling motivations. Moreover, our findings suggest that the difference between individuals who bet on sports

Gambling behaviors and perceived health among incarcerated older adults.

The proliferation of lotteries and casinos has led to increased participation in gambling. Older adults who have opportunities to gamble may be vulnerable to gambling problems, and incarcerated older adults may be the most vulnerable. Furthermore, research has linked decreased health to gambling problems. This study compared perceived health and gambling problems among 43 incarcerated older adults from two county jails in the midwestern United States. Results from the South Oaks Gambling Screen indicated 48.83% of the sample scored in the problem or pathological range. Short Form-36 results we

Social anxiety and alcohol problems: the roles of perceived descriptive and injunctive peer norms.

Although people with higher social anxiety (HSA) appear particularly vulnerable to alcohol-related problems it remains unclear why people with HSA experience such problems. One possibility is that HSA people's drinking behavior is influenced by their beliefs about others' drinking (i.e., descriptive norms) and/or others' approval of drinking (i.e., injunctive norms). The current study investigated the relationship between social anxiety, alcohol-related problems, drinking frequency and quantity, and descriptive and injunctive norms. The sample consisted of current drinkers with clinically elev

Tourette syndrome in the classroom: special problems, special needs.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is an uncommon developmental disability characterized by repetitive and involuntary verbal and motor tics. A survey of all known affiliates of the Tourette Syndrome Association of Ohio was conducted to document the special problems and needs of the TS student. A total of 431 questionnaires was returned, and the types and frequency of interpersonal and academic school problems were found to be pervasive. Problems did not differ by grade level, but students medicating their TS symptoms experienced more problems. In most cases, current students described similar problems to

Correlates of Sexual Victimization Among Community College Women.

The current study documents the correlates associated with the severity of sexual victimization among women enrolled in a 2-year community college. Comparisons between women with a history of severe sexual victimization (i.e., rape and attempted rape), moderate sexual victimization (i.e., unwanted contact and sexual coercion), and no history of sexual victimization revealed that women with a history of severe sexual victimization endorsed more drinks per week, increased problem drinking behavior, and more use of drug before sex and higher levels of self-protective dating behaviors compared wit

Chin prompt plus re-presentation as treatment for expulsion in children with feeding disorders.

Expulsion (spitting out food) is a problem behavior observed in many children with feeding disorders. In the current investigation, we identified 4 children diagnosed with a feeding disorder who exhibited high rates of expulsion. Treatment with re-presentation (placing expelled liquids or solids back into the child's mouth) was not effective in reducing expulsion. Therefore, we added a chin-prompt procedure (the feeder applied gentle upward pressure to the child's chin and lower lip) for the initial presentation and the re-presentation. Chin prompt plus re-presentation resulted in low rates of…

Scoliosis in cerebral palsy.

Spinal deformity is a common musculoskeletal problem for individuals with cerebral palsy. Severe scoliosis may impair physical function and may be a source of pain. Spine braces and carefully constructed seating arrangements may moderate the behavior of these deformities but do not seem capable of stopping progression, which often continues in adulthood. Spine fusion surgery can produce a stable, durable trunk shape that improves sitting and positioning but the process of surgery is arduous and outcomes can be compromised by numerous serious complications. Despite complications, many families
