Genome-wide transcriptome study using deep RNA sequencing for myocardial infarction and coronary artery calcification.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery calcification (CAC) is a noninvasive measure of coronary atherosclerosis, the proximal pathophysiology underlying most cases of myocardial infarction (MI). We sought to identify expression signatures of early MI and subclinical atherosclerosis in the Framingham Heart Study (FHS). In this study, we conducted paired-end RNA sequencing on whole blood collected from 198 FHS participants (55 with a history of early MI, 72 with high CAC without prior MI, and 71 controls free of elevated CAC levels or history of MI). We applied DESeq2 to identify coding-genes and long inte

The risk factors for calcification vary among the different sections of the lower extremity artery in patients with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is associated with considerable mortality and morbidity worldwide. The present study explored the risk factors for arterial calcification among the different sections of the lower extremity in patients with PAD and analyzed their correlations with the extent of arterial stenosis at the corresponding section. METHODS: This study enrolled symptomatic PAD patients from our hospital from March 2017 to March 2018. The lower extremity arterial calcification score (LEACS) and lower extremity arterial stenosis index (LEASI), representing the extent of art

Associations of Unhealthy Food Environment With the Development of Coronary Artery Calcification: The CARDIA Study.

Background While prior studies have linked the neighborhood environment and development of subclinical atherosclerosis, it is unknown whether living in neighborhoods with greater availability of "Требует внимания" food outlets (fast-food chain restaurants and convenience stores) is associated with risk of developing coronary artery calcification ( CAC ). Methods and Results We included 2706 CARDIA study (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) participants who underwent CAC measurement during follow-up years 15 (2000-2001), 20 (2005-2006), and 25 (2010-2011). Intravascular iliac artery lithotripsy to enable transfemoral thoracic endovascular aortic repair.

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is performed with large-bore delivery systems. Small-size access vessels may be a contraindication for TEVAR, particularly in case of severe calcifications. In this case report, we describe the first-in-man use of intravascular lithotripsy to enable transfemoral delivery of TEVAR stent grafts in a patient with severely calcified iliac arteries. A 69-year-old female with multiple sclerosis and thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) was referred for percutaneous TEVAR. Both common iliac arteries were severely calcified with circumferential calcifications and a

Coronary Plaque Characteristics in Hemodialysis-Dependent Patients as Assessed by Optical Coherence Tomography.

Coronary arteries in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have been shown to exhibit more extensive atherosclerosis and calcium. We aimed to assess characteristics of coronary plaque in hemodialysis (HD)-dependent patients using optical coherence tomography (OCT). This was a multicenter, retrospective study of 124 patients with stable angina who underwent OCT imaging. Sixty-two HD-dependent patients who underwent pre-intervention OCT for coronary artery disease were compared 1:1 with a cohort of patients without CKD, matched for age, diabetes mellitus, gender, and culprit vessel. Inverse relationship between the body mass index and severity of carotid siphon calcifications (another obesity paradox): Results from the Atahualpa Project.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The importance of the obesity paradox in the intracranial vasculature has not been explored. We assessed whether the body mass index (BMI) correlates with severity of carotid siphon calcifications (CSC) in community-dwelling adults. METHODS: Using a population-based study design, Atahualpa residents aged ≥40 years underwent head computed tomography (CT) for assessment of CSC. We evaluated the association between BMI and severity of CSC (dependent variable) using regression models adjusted for demographics and cardiovascular risk factors. RESULTS: Of 830 people enrolled i

Relationship between Calcification and Vulnerability of the Carotid Plaques.

BACKGROUND: Carotid plaques with a high degree of calcification are usually considered at low embolic risk. However, since a precise evaluation of the extent of calcification is not possible preoperatively through duplex ultrasound and postoperatively by conventional histological examination due to the decalcification process, the relationship between the amount of calcium involvement and plaque vulnerability has not been evaluated yet. This study aims to correlate the extent of carotid plaque calcification with clinical, radiological, and histological complications. METHODS: Symptomatic and

Loss of nighttime blood pressure dipping as a risk factor for coronary artery calcification in nondialysis chronic kidney disease.

Diurnal variations in blood pressure (BP) loss are closely associated with target organ damage and cardiovascular events. The quantity of coronary artery calcification (CAC) correlates with the atherosclerotic plaque burden, and an increased quantity indicates a substantially increased risk of cardiovascular events. This study investigated the nighttime diurnal variation in BP loss associated with CAC in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).Of the 1958 participants, we enrolled 722 participants with CKD without a history of acute coronary syndrome or symptomatic coronary artery disease.

Epicardial and paracardial adipose tissue volume and attenuation - Association with high-risk coronary plaque on computed tomographic angiography in the ROMICAT II trial.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To determine whether epicardial (EAT) and paracardial adipose tissue (PAT) volume and attenuation are associated with high-risk coronary plaque features. METHODS: In subjects with suspected acute coronary syndrome (ACS) enrolled in the ROMICAT II trial, EAT and PAT volumes indexed to body surface area (BSA) and attenuation were measured on non-contrast coronary artery calcium score (CACS) CT. High-risk plaque features (napkin-ring sign, positive remodeling, low density plaque, spotty calcium) and stenosis were assessed on coronary CT angiography (CTA). The association of

Beyond Coronary Calcification, Family History, and C-Reactive Protein: Cholesterol Efflux Capacity and Cardiovascular Risk Prediction.

BACKGROUND: Cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC), which is a key step in the reverse cholesterol transport pathway, is independently associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, whether it predicts ASCVD beyond validated novel risk markers is unknown. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed if CEC improved ACSVD risk prediction beyond using coronary artery calcium (CAC), family history (FH), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). METHODS: CEC, CAC, self-reported FH, and hs-CRP were assessed among participants without baseline ASCVD who were enrolled in the Dallas

Determinants of coronary artery calcification in maintenance hemodialysis patients.

In addition to the well-known traditional risk factors, uremia-related so-called novel risk factors and medications appear to affect coronary artery calcification in hemodialysis patients. This study was performed to evaluate coronary artery calcification score (CACS) in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients, and to identify significantly related factors. We assessed CACS using Agatston Score by MDCT, sex, age, dialysis vintage, presence of diabetes mellitus, smoking history, presence of ≥100 ml urine volume/day, normalized protein catabolic rate, geriatric nutritional risk index, administra

Assessment of atherosclerosis in chronic granulomatous disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) experience immunodeficiency because of defects in the phagocyte NADPH oxidase and the concomitant reduction in reactive oxygen intermediates. This may result in a reduction in atherosclerotic injury. METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively assessed the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, biomarkers of inflammation and neutrophil activation, and the presence of magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography quantified subclinical atherosclerosis in the carotid and coronary arteries of 41 patients with CGD and 25 healthy con

Positive association of coronary calcium detected by computed tomography coronary angiography with periprocedural myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Periprocedural myocardial infarction (PMI) may occur in approximately 5% to 30% of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. Whether the morphology of coronary plaque calcium affects the occurrence of PMI is unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 616 subjects with stable angina and normal baseline cardiac troponin I levels who had undergone computed tomography angiography (CTA) were referred to elective percutaneous coronary intervention. The morphology of coronary calcium was determined by CTA analysis. PMI was defined as an elevation in 24-h post-procedural car

The prevalence of aortic calcification on vertebral fracture assessment imaging among patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are at increased risk of osteoporosis (OP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans have been validated for identifying patients with RA at risk for fracture. Reliable CVD risk stratification remains an unmet need in this population. Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA)-detected abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) has been validated as a marker of CVD in other populations, but the prevalence among patients with RA is unknown. In this study, we determined the prevalence and severity of AAC on VFA scans in a cohort of patien
