Effectiveness of Chinese Herbal Medicine Combined with Antibiotics for Extensively Drug-Resistant Enterobacteria and Nonfermentative Bacteria Infection: Real-Life Experience in a Retrospective Cohort.

Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) have been successfully used in the treatment of infectious diseases, yet the effectiveness of CHMs for extensively drug-resistant enterobacteria (XDRE) infection remains unclear. Herein we developed a retrospective multicenter study including 766 patients with XDRE and nonfermentative bacteria (NFB) infection to investigate the effectiveness of CHMs combined with antibiotics in the treatment of XDRE infections in clinical daily practice in a cohort of patients and compared the regular antibiotics monotherapy. After 14-day treatment, the 547 patients accepted CHM

Epidemiology of transmissible diseases: Array hybridization and next generation sequencing as universal nucleic acid-mediated typing tools.

The magnitude of interest in the epidemiology of transmissible human diseases is reflected in the vast number of tools and methods developed recently with the expressed purpose to characterize and track evolutionary changes that occur in agents of these diseases over time. Within the past decade a new suite of such tools has become available with the emergence of the so-called "omics" technologies. Among these, two are exponents of the ongoing genomic revolution. Firstly, high-density nucleic acid probe arrays have been proposed and developed using various chemical and physical approaches. Via

Causes of infection after earthquake, China, 2008.

To determine which organisms most commonly cause infection after natural disasters, we cultured specimens from injured earthquake survivors in Wenchuan, China, 2008. Of 123 cultures, 46 (59%) grew only 1 type of pathogenic bacteria. Smear was more effective than culture for early diagnosis of gas gangrene. Early diagnosis and treatment of wounds are crucial.

Value of the Pitt bacteremia score in predicting the outcome of nonbacteremic patients with infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.

OBJECTIVES: Infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are increasingly associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Early identification of high-risk patients is essential. The Pitt Bacteremia Score (PBS) is validated in bloodstream infections, but its role in nonbacteremic infections remains unclear. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the PBS in predicting mortality among patients with nonbacteremic MDRO infections and compare it with the quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) score and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). METHODS: We

Antimicrobial resistance and genomic characterization of Salmonella Minnesota, ESBL-producing Escherichia coli, and ESKAPE pathogens isolated from Brazilian broiler chicken carcasses.

INTRODUCTION: Brazil is the world's largest exporter of chicken meat, and poultry products are recognized as important reservoirs of foodborne pathogens. Salmonella enterica serovar Minnesota has emerged as the predominant serovar in the poultry industry and is frequently associated with multidrug-resistant strains carrying multiple antimicrobial resistance genes. In addition, Escherichia coli and ESKAPE pathogens have been increasingly isolated from poultry products worldwide, representing a growing public health concern due to their antimicrobial resistance and dissemination potential. D/PVA/I-1 as an Antibiotic Adjuvant: In Vitro Synergy and Membrane Permeabilization in MDR Bacteria.

Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is among the most pressing challenges in modern infectious medicine, driving progressive failure of standard antibacterial therapy and rising mortality from infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens. Antibiotic potentiation through adjuvant compounds capable of restoring the activity of existing drugs represents a promising strategy to overcome resistance without developing fundamentally new antibacterial molecules. This study aimed to evaluate the antibiotic-potentiating activity of a dextrin/polyvinyl alcohol/iodine complex (D/PVA/I-1

Global integrative analysis of whole-genome-based predictions of antimicrobial resistance trends in five major nosocomial pathogens.

Global increases in antimicrobial resistance in key nosocomial pathogens, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterococcus faecium, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus, have severely compromised clinical efficacy and increased health-care expenditures. Although species-specific surveillance is common, large-scale analyses covering diverse geographic domains remain limited. To address this gap, we systematically analyzed more than 100,000 bacterial isolates from global databases. We leveraged whole-genome sequencing-based antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) iden

Spatiotemporal dynamics and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens recovered from various fomites at a paediatric care facility in Ghana.

Hospital fomites are major reservoirs of nosocomial pathogens, facilitating healthcare-associated infections, particularly in critical units. However, longitudinal studies investigating the persistence of pathogens on hospital surfaces and their antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns remain limited. This study examined the spatiotemporal distribution and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens isolated from fomite surfaces at Princess Marie Louise Children's Hospital (PML), Accra, Ghana. A 12-week longitudinal study (September 4-November 26, 2023) was conducted across four departments

Dinuclear Zinc(II) Complexes as Metallo-β-Lactamase Inhibitors with Antibiofilm Activity against MDR Gram-Negative Bacteria.

The alarming upsurge of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infection poses a serious burden to global health. The gradual restriction of advanced β-lactam-based antibiotic usage is mechanistically driven by bacterial metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) secretion, causing significant therapeutic failure and infection persistence. Furthermore, biofilm development has led to the disease scenario becoming more severe by restricting antibiotic penetration and immune responses. The present article describes a strategic design and development of dinuclear zinc(II) complex-based MBL inhibitors, coupled with an

Lactic acid bacteria-derived biosurfactants: emerging strategies for biofilm control, virulence attenuation, and food safety.

Biofilm-associated infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria and fungi impose a substantial global health burden, and conventional antibiotics are increasingly ineffective at eradicating them due to poor penetration of the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix and escalating resistance. Biosurfactants produced by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) have attracted research interest as alternatives, owing to the GRAS status of their producing organisms and their broad mechanistic repertoire. This review critically evaluates the structural diversity of LAB-derived biosurfactants, covering

Cholesterol-terminated cationic lipidated oligomers (CLOs) as a new class of antifungals.

Infections caused by fungal pathogens are a global health problem, and have created an urgent need for new antimicrobial strategies. This report details the synthesis of lipidated 2-vinyl-4,4-dimethyl-5-oxazolone (VDM) oligomers via an optimized Cu(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) approach. Cholesterol-Br was used as an initiator to synthesize a library of oligo-VDM (degree of polymerisation = 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25), with an α-terminal cholesterol group. Subsequent ring-opening of the pendant oxazolone group with various functional amines [i.e., 2-(2-aminoethyl
