In order to reveal colonization with multidrug-resistant bacteria early, routine screening is done on samples of all patients of the neonatal intensive care units at Semmelweis University, Hungary. Melioidosis is a tropical disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, which is common in southeast Asia and Australia, but which is rarely diagnosed in Scandinavia. An increasing number of cases are being reported among tourists to infected areas.
