Spin-Dependent Terms of the Breit-Pauli Hamiltonian Evaluated with an Explicitly Correlated Gaussian Basis Set for Molecular Computations.

This work collects the spin-dependent leading-order relativistic and quantum-electrodynamical corrections for the electronic structure of atoms and molecules within the nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics framework. We report the computation of perturbative corrections using an explicitly correlated Gaussian basis set, which allows high-precision computations for few-electron systems. In addition to numerical tests for triplet Be, triplet H2, and triplet H3 + states and comparison with no-pair Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian energies, numerical results are reported for electronically excit

Simulation to minimise patient self-inflicted lung injury: are we almost there?

Computational modelling has been used to enlighten pathophysiological issues in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) using a sophisticated, integrated cardiopulmonary model. COVID-19 ARDS is a pathophysiologically distinct entity characterised by dissociation between impairment in gas exchange and respiratory system mechanics, especially in the early stages of ARDS. Weaver and colleagues used computational modelling to elucidate factors contributing to generation of patient self-inflicted lung injury, and evaluated the effects of various spontaneous respiratory efforts with

Training facial expression production in children on the autism spectrum.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show deficits in their ability to produce facial expressions. In this study, a group of children with ASD and IQ-matched, typically developing (TD) children were trained to produce "happy" and "angry" expressions with the FaceMaze computer game. FaceMaze uses an automated computer recognition system that analyzes the child's facial expression in real time. Before and after playing the Angry and Happy versions of FaceMaze, children posed "happy" and "angry" expressions. Naïve raters judged the post-FaceMaze "happy" and "angry" expressions of the ASD

From reinforcement learning models to psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Over the last decade and a half, reinforcement learning models have fostered an increasingly sophisticated understanding of the functions of dopamine and cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical (CBGTC) circuits. More recently, these models, and the insights that they afford, have started to be used to understand important aspects of several psychiatric and neurological disorders that involve disturbances of the dopaminergic system and CBGTC circuits. We review this approach and its existing and potential applications to Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome, attention-deficit/hyperactivity d

A computational model of neglect dyslexia.

This paper presents a straightforward theory of neglect (a pre-attentive salience system selects objects' centers for the focus of an attentional "spotlight") as a computational model. This construction permits simulations of model "lesions" and allows checking unequivocally the model's implications. The current model can account for some of the common patterns of observations of neglect dyslexia: that errors increase with word length and that short words may be read as "too long". Most importantly, it also accounts for a dissociation between neglect dyslexia and neglect on line bisection task

Three-dimensional computer-assisted simulation combining facial skeleton with facial morphology for orthognathic surgery.

The purpose of this study was to use a 3-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design (CAD) simulation system to plan surgical procedures and predict postoperative changes in orthognathic surgery patients. A computer-generated imaging model was developed by combining a 3D reconstructed cephalometric skeletal image and a laser-scanned facial surface image. Moreover, postoperative data were studied and linked to the simulator model for programming and executing simulated surgical procedures. Interactive editing capabilities allow surgeons to operate CAD surgical simulation, and predicted results can b

Neuroimaging findings of four patients with Sandhoff disease.

Sandhoff disease is a severe form of GM2 gangliosidosis that is caused by the deficiency of both hexosaminidase A and B. Startle reaction, hypotonia, psychomotor retardation, and blindness are the main clinical features. Presented are computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging findings of four patients with Sandhoff disease diagnosed by enzymatic analyses. Bilateral homogeneous thalamic hyperdensity was evident on computed tomography. Magnetic resonance imaging scans revealed mild cortical atrophy, a thin corpus callosum, and abnormal signal intensities in the caudate nucleus, globus p

A case report of disseminated tuberculosis: an unsuspected uterine cervical mass in a young native american woman with new-onset seizure disorder.

Disseminated tuberculosis involving the uterine cervix and central nervous system is described in a 26-year-old Native American female with new-onset seizures. Her presenting complaint was generalized seizures with associated weight loss, chronic cough, global headache, and malaise. Pelvic examination revealed an exophytic cervical mass consistent with carcinoma. Laboratory results showed anemia, hypoalbuminemia, and radiodensities on chest radiography. Cultures of sputum and cervix were positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Cervical biopsies revealed multiple acid-fast bacilli. Computed to

Multifocal fibrosclerosis. Report of a case of bilateral idiopathic sclerosing pseudotumor and retroperitoneal fibrosis.

We describe a 56-year-old white man who presented with gradual and progressive visual loss and subsequent hypertension and pedal edema. A computed tomographic scan of the orbits showed bilateral diffuse retrobulbar masses, and an abdominal computed tomographic scan showed a diffuse retroperitoneal mass invading the aorta, ureters, and inferior vena cava. Biopsies of the orbit and abdomen confirmed a heterogeneous cell population and marked fibrosis consistent with a sclerosing inflammatory process. Bilateral sclerosing orbital inflammatory disease should cue the physician to suspect coexisting

Biliary complications of pancreatitis.

The biliary complications of pancreatitis include cholestasis, secondary biliary cirrhosis, cholangitis, and pseudocyst or fistula affecting the hepatobiliary system. Of these, the most relevant for radiologists is cholestasis caused by biliary duct stenosis in an inflamed pancreatic head. Radiologic assessment of these complications is based on judicious use of ultrasound, computed tomography, and direct cholangiography. The typical imaging finding of common bile duct stenosis due to chronic pancreatitis is gradual tapered narrowing of the intrapancreatic common bile duct, which can be portra

Computed tomography in neurocysticercosis.

Neurocysticercosis is a major public health problem in developing countries. Before computed tomography became available its diagnosis was very restricted and the conventional diagnostic methods were unreliable. It also was frequently necessary to submit patients to costly and dangerous surgical procedures to confirm the precise nature of the disease. One hundred and seventy-one patients with neurocysticercosis were evaluated by computed tomography. The diagnostic findings of the different types of lesions produced by the larva of the parasite (Taenia solium) in the central nervous system, and

[Artificial endocrine pancreas (author's transl)].

16 years ago Kadish (1963) Trans. Amer. Soc. Artif. Org. 9, 363--367) published his first pioneering experiments with an extracorporal blood glucose regulating machine. These experiments were fundamental to the development of an artificial endocrine pancreas that replaces the natural regulator of the blood glucose. Enormous improvements have been done as far as analytical and computer technology and algorithms are concerned. Satisfactory but time-limited insulin therapy of problematic diabetics is feasable and benefical. However, in spite of a very great miniaturization of the analytical devic

Ordinal-pattern transition networks as a symbolic substrate for reservoir computing.

Reservoir computing has established itself as a computationally efficient alternative to fully trained recurrent neural networks using a fixed high-dimensional nonlinear substrate to map temporal input into a feature space for a simple readout. Here, we argue that reservoir computing can be realized entirely within a coarse-grained, symbolic state space, and that constrained random walks on ordinal-pattern transition networks provide a natural instance of this realization, replacing the reservoir's continuous state space with a discrete and directly data-derived one. We develop a formal corres

Event-Driven Sentinel-Expert Neuromorphic Vision Enabled by Polarization-Reconfigurable Organic Ferroelectric Phototransistors.

In the era of the Internet of Things and edge intelligence, conventional always-on machine vision systems suffer from severe energy bottlenecks because they continuously process massively redundant spatiotemporal data. Inspired by the dual-pathway strategy of the human retina, we propose a bioinspired "Sentinel-Expert" synergetic vision system enabled by polarization-reconfigurable organic ferroelectric phototransistors based on P(VDF-TrFE). By manipulating the ferroelectric polarization states, a single device is reconfigured into three functional modes: (i) a magnocellular pathway-inspired S

Resistive switching memristors: structures, materials, fabrication techniques, and process challenges for VLSI integration.

Memristors have gained popularity in being used as nanodevices to be used as nonvolatile memory devices, neuromorphic computing systems, and even compute-in-memory systems due to their property of nonvolatile resistive switching, power savings, scalability, and simple metal-insulator-metal structures. These memristive switching operations can occur due to different phenomena like oxygen vacancy movement, electrochemical metallization, valence change operations, phase change, and ferroelectric polarization operations. Performance of such devices greatly depends on materials and processing, henc

Technology roadmap from fiber materials to fiber electronics.

Fiber electronics, one-dimensional structures with active electronic functions while maintaining the flexibility of traditional fibers or textiles, represent a paradigm shift in electronic technologies, transforming passive fiber or textile substrates into active, intelligent systems that integrate powering, sensing, computation, and communication capabilities. This field has rapidly evolved from the development of simple conductive threads to the creation of sophisticated, multifunctional fiber devices. Significant progress is underpinned by the design of functional fiber materials with excep

Accelerating computational fluid dynamics simulation of post-combustion carbon capture modeling with MeshGraphNets.

Packed columns are commonly used in post-combustion processes to capture CO2 emissions by providing enhanced contact area between a CO2-laden gas and CO2-absorbing solvent. To study and optimize solvent-based post-combustion carbon capture systems (CCSs), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be used to model the liquid-gas countercurrent flow hydrodynamics in these columns and derive key determinants of CO2-capture efficiency. However, the large design space of these systems hinders the application of CFD for design optimization due to its high computational cost. In contrast, data-driven mo

Recent Advancement of Indocyanine Green Based Nanotheranostics for Imaging and Therapy of Coronary Atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a vascular intima condition in which any part of the circulatory system is affected, including the aorta and coronary arteries. Indocyanine green (ICG), a theranostic compound approved by the FDA, has shown promise in the treatment of coronary atherosclerosis after incorporation into nanoplatforms. By integration of ICG with targeting agents such as peptides or antibodies, it is feasible to increase its concentration in damaged arteries, hence increasing atherosclerosis detection. Nanotheranostics offers cutting-edge techniques for the clinical diagnosis and therapy of ather
