Prevalence of Contact Allergy to Nickel: A Retrospective Chart Review.

BACKGROUND: No recent studies reporting nickel sensitivity prevalence in Canadians exist. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to quantify nickel sensitivity prevalence in patients at a patch test clinic in Vancouver. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 3263 patients patch tested for nickel sensitivity at our clinic in Vancouver between 2008 and 2020. RESULTS: In total, 24.3% (n = 792 of 3263) of patients were sensitive to nickel. Nickel sensitivity significantly increased over time from 24.3% to 27.9% from 2008 to 2020. Nickel-sensitive patients were significantly more likely to be wom

Contact Dermatitis From Gum Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus) and Gum Storax (Liquidambar styraciflua) in Mastisol-Allergic Patients.

BACKGROUND: Mastisol Liquid Adhesive is widely used on the skin, especially after surgical procedures. It contains gum mastic, gum storax, methyl salicylate, and ethanol. OBJECTIVE: The aims of the study were to review our experience patch testing patients allergic to Mastisol and to assess coreacting substances. METHODS: We identified 18 patients who were allergic to Mastisol. Most of these had a history of postoperative or cardiac electrode dermatitis and underwent patch testing with multiple surgically related substances, including ingredients of Mastisol, compound tincture of benzoin, an

The Penetration of Chromium: An Up-To-Date 0.5% Potassium Dichromate Vehicle Comparison.

BACKGROUND: Chromium (Cr) contact allergy is frequent in many industrialized countries. The knowledge of the factors that can influence percutaneous penetration is very important assessing the risk of human exposure. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to compare the concentration of Cr in various skin layers using 2 different vehicles. METHODS: Full-thickness (approximately 1 mm) porcine ear skin was mounted in Franz-type diffusion cells. Duplicate potassium dichromate preparations in 0.5% petrolatum (pet) and 0.5% in aqua (aq) were applied to the donor compartment facing the epidermis for

Impact of Atopic Dermatitis and Chronic Hand Eczema on Quality of Life Compared With Other Chronic Diseases.

: The aim of this study was to conduct 3 literature reviews to examine the impact of atopic dermatitis (AD) and chronic hand eczema (CHE) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared with other chronic conditions by comparing reported utility scores of 4 commonly used generic HRQoL instruments. A systematic search was performed using PubMed, ScienceDirect, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Health Technology Assessment database, and ScHARRHUD. Inclusion criteria included, but were not limited to, patients of any age, studies from any location, publications reporting utility data based on EuroQoL 5 dimensi

Patch Test Practice Patterns of Members of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.

BACKGROUND: Patch testing is the criterion standard for diagnosis and management of allergic contact dermatitis. Limitations on the number of allergens tested can negatively impact patient care. OBJECTIVE: This study reports clinical practice patterns of American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) members. METHODS: In October and November 2018, the US-based members of the ACDS received an electronic survey regarding their procedures and experiences with patch testing. We evaluated the type of practice, number of patients tested, type of screening and supplemental series, number of allergens t

Isobornyl Acrylate.

Multidisciplinary collaboration between several European dermatology departments has identified isobornyl acrylate (IBOA; CAS 5888-33-5), once deemed a low-risk sensitizer, as a major culprit contact allergen in glucose sensors and insulin pumps, medical devices used by diabetes patients worldwide. Although the patch test modalities of IBOA have been fairly well characterized, intriguing questions remain. For example, its cross-reactive profile to other acrylates remains to be determined, and the striking occurrence of concomitant positive patch test reactions to sesquiterpene lactones needs t

Validating Responsiveness of a Quality-of-Life Instrument for Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Although many generic dermatological quality-of-life (QoL) instruments exist, none have been specifically designed for patients with allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). In the preceding publication-Validating a Quality-of-Life Instrument for Allergic Contact Dermatitis-we developed and validated a QoL instrument specific to the ACD population. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess whether this ACD-specific QoL instrument appropriately captures change in QoL after patch testing in ACD patients. METHODS: One hundred individuals completed the previously validated 17-item QoL

Urushiol Compounds Detected in Toxicodendron-Labeled Consumer Products Using Mass Spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Urushiol, the culprit allergen in Toxicodendron plants such as poison ivy, is an oily mixture of 15 and 17 carbon side chain alk-(en)-yl catechols. Recently, consumer products have been identified that contain Toxicodendron as an ingredient on their label; however, no studies have assessed whether urushiol is indeed present within these products. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine whether urushiol compounds are present in consumer products labeled as containing Toxicodendron species. METHODS: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-tandem mass

American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Allergen Series: 2020 Update.

The American Contact Dermatitis Society Core Allergen series was introduced in 2013 and updated in 2017. Changes in our recommended allergens are again necessary, taking into account data from the American Contact Dermatitis Society's Contact Allergen Management Program top 100 allergens from 2018. For the updated series, we removed methyldibromoglutaronitrile and added new haptens: Lyral, Limonene, Linalool, carmine, benzyl salicylate, disperse yellow 3, jasmine, peppermint, pramoxine, shellac, and lauryl polyglucose (glucosides). These additional allergens should increase the yield of releva

Maternal Depression and Atopic Dermatitis in American Children and Adolescents.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease associated with considerable burden and mental health symptoms. We sought to determine the association of maternal depression in the postpartum period and maternal and paternal depression in later childhood with AD prevalence and persistence in US children. Data were analyzed from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a prospective cohort study of 4898 children born in 20 metropolitan US cities. History of postpartum depression was associated with childhood AD overall (multivariable logistic regression; adjusted odds rati
