Evaluating chikungunya outbreak size and emergency vaccination strategies in Miami: an exploratory modeling study.

BACKGROUND: The risk of vector-borne diseases such as chikungunya - caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes - is increasing as globalization and climate change continue to expand the habitat of its primary vectors. In 2024 alone, nearly 500,000 chikungunya cases were reported worldwide. Miami-Dade County, Florida, is particularly vulnerable due to the endemic presence of Aedes aegypti and its role as a major entry point for international travel and trade. This study explores the possible impact of a CHIKV outbreak in urban Miami and the effectiveness of an e

Joint spatiotemporal modelling reveals seasonally dynamic patterns of Japanese encephalitis vector abundance across India.

Predicting vector abundance and seasonality, key components of mosquito-borne disease (MBD) hazard, is essential to determine hotspots of MBD risk and target interventions effectively. Japanese encephalitis (JE), an important MBD, is a leading cause of viral encephalopathy in Asia with 100,000 cases estimated annually, but data on the principal vector Culex tritaeniorhynchus is lacking. We developed a Bayesian joint-likelihood model that combined information from available vector occurrence and abundance data to predict seasonal vector abundance for C. tritaeniorhynchus (a constituent of JE ha

Eco-epidemiological scaling of Leptospirosis: Vulnerability mapping and early warning forecasts.

Infectious disease epidemics are plaguing the world and a lot of research is focused on the development of models to reproduce disease dynamics for eco-environmental and biological investigation, and disease management. Leptospirosis is an example of a neglected zoonosis strongly mediated by ecohydrological dynamics with emerging endemic and epidemic patterns worldwide in both animal and human populations. By accounting for large heterogeneities of affected areas we show how exponential endemics and scale-free epidemics are largely predictable and linked to common socio-environmental features

The association between temperature variability and cause-specific mortality: Evidence from 47 Japanese prefectures during 1972-2015.

BACKGROUND: In the context of climate change, extreme temperature events are known to be associated with increased mortality risk. However, data about the mortality risk related to temperature variability (TV) accounting for both intra- and inter-day variations in temperature are limited. OBJECTIVES: The present study aims to quantify the associations between TV and cause-specific mortality in Japan, evaluate whether the effects of TV are modified by prefecture-level characteristics and examine the temporal trend in mortality risk of TV. METHODS: Data on daily all-cause and 11 cause-specific

Transmission of Calicophoron daubneyi and Fasciola hepatica in Galicia (Spain): Temporal follow-up in the intermediate and definitive hosts.

BACKGROUND: Paramphistomosis caused by Calicophoron daubneyi and fasciolosis caused by Fasciola hepatica are common parasitic diseases of livestock animals. Transmission of the diseases depends on the presence of intermediate hosts, i.e. freshwater gastropods such as lymnaeids. We carried out a 2-year-long study of the dynamics of the snail population acting as the intermediate host for these parasites, considering the population structure in terms of size/age and infection status. In addition, we determined the kinetics of trematode egg excretion in grazing cows. Generalized Additive Models (

Community-based implementation and effectiveness in a randomized trial of a risk reduction intervention for HIV-serodiscordant couples: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to disproportionately affect African American communities in the US, particularly those located in urban areas. Despite the fact that HIV is often transmitted from one sexual partner to another, most HIV prevention interventions have focused only on individuals, rather than couples. This five-year study investigates community-based implementation, effectiveness, and sustainability of 'Eban II,' an evidence-based risk reduction intervention for African-American heterosexual, serodiscordant couples. METHODS/DESIGN: This hybrid implementation/effective

Constructing pathways for glycine betaine in cross-domain ecological restoration: a bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: Grassland ecosystems play a critical role in global ecological security and sustainable development. However, they are experiencing continuous functional decline due to multiple stresses under climate change. Glycine betaine (GB) has been systematically studied for enhancing stress tolerance in agricultural crops. Nevertheless, a knowledge gap exists regarding its application in the restoration of degraded grasslands. What social-ecological values might emerge from addressing this gap? METHODS: To address these questions, this study conducted a systematic bibliometric analysis of

Distribution and Risk Factors of Scrub Typhus in South Korea, From 2013 to 2019: Bayesian Spatiotemporal Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Scrub typhus (ST), also known as tsutsugamushi disease, is a common febrile vector-borne illness in South Korea, transmitted by trombiculid mites infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi, with rodents serving as the main hosts. Although vector-borne diseases like ST require both a One Health approach and a spatiotemporal perspective to fully understand their complex dynamics, previous studies have often lacked integrated analyses that simultaneously address disease dynamics, vectors, and environmental shifts. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore spatiotemporal trends, high-risk areas, and r

Sinking rates of phytoplankton in the Bohai and Yellow Seas: Insights into the regulatory role of the Yellow Sea cold water mass on carbon export.

Phytoplankton sinking is a key process in the biological carbon pump, driving vertical transport of organic carbon in the ocean. The Yellow Sea Cold Water Mass (YSCWM) is a prominent hydrological feature in the Yellow Sea in warm seasons, yet its association with phytoplankton sinking rates and subsequent carbon export remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated phytoplankton sinking and carbon export in the Bohai Sea and in waters inside and outside the YSCWM through field and statistical analyses. Phytoplankton sinking rates, determined using the settling column (SETCOL) method based on

Local and non-local energy transfers in eddy-mean flow interactions along the Indonesian throughflow.

How local energy conversion and non-local redistribution jointly shape eddy activity along the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) remains unclear. Using long-term, eddy-resolving ocean model output, we diagnose exchanges among mean and eddy kinetic and available potential energy along the ITF and its adjacent basins. The results reveal a marked change in the dominant energy pathway. At the Pacific entrance and along the western ITF, eddies gain energy primarily through barotropic conversion associated with the sheared mean current. Farther downstream, baroclinic conversion becomes more prominent nea

When is travel-health AI inference transportable? Mobility-conditioned admissibility for cross-border disease risk and decision support.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence is increasingly used for infectious disease surveillance, traveller risk assessment, outbreak forecasting and decision support. Travel creates a distinctive transportability problem because people move between epidemiological, geographic, climatic and healthcare contexts in which the conditions supporting an inference may change rapidly. METHODS: This conceptual/theoretical methodological-development study was informed by a targeted narrative review of travel medicine, infectious disease surveillance, human mobility, border health, mass gatherings, antimicr

Public Health Pharmacology: a framework for population-level immunologic monitoring (PLIM) to optimize vaccine performance in Africa.

Despite high administrative immunization coverage across Sub-Saharan Africa, unexpected infectious disease outbreaks pose significant public health challenges. Traditional tracking relies heavily on logistical inputs and reactive surveillance, leaving an unmonitored biological gap in real-world host immunity. This paper presents a novel systems-design conceptual framework for Population-Level Immunologic Monitoring (PLIM) as a core operational tool of Public Health Pharmacology (PHP) to systematically bridge this gap. PLIM operates across three interconnected pillars: (1) biological sentinel s

Zoonotic Viral Spillover: From Reservoir Ecology and Viral Evolution to Pandemic Prevention.

Zoonotic viral spillover represents a major global health challenge arising from complex interactions among viral evolution, reservoir ecology, host biology, environmental disruption, and human activities. Successful emergence requires viruses to overcome successive ecological, cellular, and immunological barriers, including receptor compatibility, cellular tropism, replication efficiency, and innate immune restriction. Reservoir hosts such as bats, rodents, birds, and livestock contribute to viral maintenance and diversification through distinct ecological and physiological characteristics, w

[Soil preferential flow in wetland ecosystems:Formation, characterization, and effects on soil carbon transformation.].

Wetlands are highly sensitive to hydrological disturbances. The carbon source-sink dynamics of wetlands are jointly regulated by hydrological regimes and soil structural heterogeneity. Under frequent water-level fluctuations and wetting-drying cycles, complex pore architectures and heterogeneous flow pathways are gradually deve-loped in wetland soils, generating preferential flow processes that substantially deviate from the assumption of homogeneous continuum media. As rapid conduits for water and solute transport, preferential flows can modify soil carbon transformation by regulating the red

From Reactive Remediation to Predictive Prevention: A Systems Synthesis of Global Soil Salinization and Sodicity.

Soil salinization and sodicity are accelerating worldwide, reducing crop productivity across more than 160 million hectares of farmland and causing production losses approaching USD 27 billion annually. Despite decades of research documenting these impacts, the extent of salt-affected soils continues to expand. Salt-affected soil degradation emerges from feedbacks among physical, biological, and socioeconomic processes that operate across scales and resist intervention when addressed in isolation. This review synthesizes current understanding of these coupled feedbacks. We trace how ion accumu

Global Health Hazards From Human-Derived Volatile Organic Compounds Amid Emission Variability.

Health risks from high air pollution exposure remain challenging despite pollution control strategies. Health hazards caused by particulate matter and ozone have been reported for the past three decades. Here, we report the hazard quotient for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) causing non-carcinogenic risk globally using chemistry-climate model simulations. We report hazard quotient (HQ) for three scenarios: (a) baseline scenario, (b) continued increasing emissions leading to doubling of anthropogenic VOCs (DVOCS), and (c) mitigation scenarios where emissions are reduced to half (HalfVOCS). A Global Methane Observation System to Reduce Uncertainty for Anthropogenic and Natural Sources and Sinks for Detecting and Attributing Climate Feedbacks.

Atmospheric methane (CH4) concentrations are accelerating global warming as net emissions increase. Observing systems that quantify sources remain too sparse and fragmented to detect trends-especially in remote regions where climate-driven natural emissions may be rising. We provide a framework for quantifying uncertainty reductions through the implementation of a global ecosystem-methane observing system designed to: (i) substantially lower uncertainty in sectoral and regional emissions, (ii) separate co-occurring anthropogenic and natural fluxes, and (iii) trend detection at regional scales

An intersectional approach for the effects of school bullying & cyberbullying on beliefs about the future among Latine LGBTQ+ youth in the United States.

Latine lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) youth in the United States (U.S.) experience compounded forms of oppression that increase vulnerability to both school-based and cyberbullying. Guided by the Minority Stress Theory (MST) and the Temporal Intersectional Minority Stress Model (TIMSM), this study examined how intersectional bullying relates to future outlook among Latine LGBTQ+ youth, and whether internalized stigma, depression, and caregiver acceptance mediate or moderate these associations. Data were drawn from a national U.S. sample of 1772 Latine LGBTQ+ adolescent

Measuring the impact of climate and air quality on COVID-19 transmission dynamics: a tale of two cities in pandemic preparedness.

This comparative study investigates the non-linear influence of nine meteorological and air quality factors on COVID-19 transmission in Daegu and Seoul, South Korea, from January to July 2020. Employing Generalized Additive Models (GAMs), percentile-based risk zone identification, and K-means clustering, our analysis demonstrated that environmental factors are highly region-specific, challenging universal public health approaches. In Daegu, the risk profile was strongly shaped by climatic factors (GAM Explained Deviance: 63.0%), exhibiting a U-shaped temperature effect with elevated risk at bo
