BACKGROUND: Dermatofibromas, also known as benign fibrous histiocytomas, are among the most common cutaneous soft-tissue lesions. Association of multiple dermatofibromas with some diseases was described and it has not been reported with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome before. We present a case with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and multiple dermatofibromas.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old Iranian woman presented with multiple purple nodules ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 cm in diameter, which were mobile and located on the proximal part of the lower limb. The dimple sign of these lesions was positive. During the

Occupational acro-osteolysis pertains to bone resorption of the distal phalanges of the hands and feet among workers with vinyl chloride exposure. We report the case of a Filipino man with osteolysis of the distal phalanges of the hands initially considered to have systemic sclerosis. The patient had gradual shortening of the fingers, thickening of the skin over the extremities, and hypopigmented patches over a span of more than 20 years. His lower extremities presented with non-pitting edema, skin thickening, and neuropathy, without shortening of the digits. Difficulty of ambulation was appar

Ideally, robots may be designed to adapt to different tasks such as heavy lifting and handling delicate objects, in which the requirements in force compliance and position accuracy vary dramatically. While conventional rigid actuators are usually characterized by high precision and large force output, soft actuators are designed to be more compliant and flexible. In this paper, a lobster-inspired bending module with compliant actuation, enhanced torque output, and reconfigurability in assembling is presented. It is also capable of accurate control of its angular position with variable stiffnes

A 73-year-old male patient suffered multiple dog bites to the left hand and lower arm. The initial treatment in hospital consisted of conservative treatment with wound closure strips and bandages. For further treatment the patient was referred to the general practitioner who found a discharge of pus below the wound closure strips 2 days later. On the 3rd day the patient was admitted to a different hospital where surgical treatment with débridement, placement of vacuum bandages and subsequent flap plasty was conducted on admission. An examination 1 year later revealed stabbing pain over the car

BACKGROUND: Congenital contractural arachnodactyly (CCA) is an autosomal dominant rare genetic disease, estimated to be less than 1 in 10,000 worldwide. People with this condition often have permanently bent joints (contractures), like bent fingers and toes (camptodactyly).
CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, we investigated the genetic aetiology of CCA in a four-generation Chinese family. The blood samples were collected from 22 living members of the family in the Yangquan County, Shanxi Province, China. Of those, eight individuals across 3 generations have CCA. IMPORTANCE: Excessive use of smartphones has been associated with injuries.
OBSERVATIONS: A 29-year-old, right hand-dominant man presented with chronic left thumb pain and loss of active motion from playing a Match-3 puzzle video game on his smartphone all day for 6 to 8 weeks. On physical examination, the left extensor pollicis longus tendon was not palpable, and no tendon motion was noted with wrist tenodesis. The thumb metacarpophalangeal range of motion was 10° to 80°, and thumb interphalangeal range of motion was 30° to 70°. The clinical diagnosis was rupture of the left extensor pollici

Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the US with 700,000 annual cases. Although most cases of gonorrhea are localized, approximately 0.5-3% become disseminated. Here we discuss a rare case of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed septic shock from disseminated gonorrhea infection (DGI). Our patient is a 24-year-old woman with SLE, mixed connective tissue disease with cutaneous vasculitis, and lupus nephritis who presented with several weeks of malaise and generalized body aches associated with a diffuse rash along her fingers, palms, an

PROBLEMATIC: Thumb hypoplasia is a rare congenital hand disorder. Despite the recent clarifications concerning many surgical indications, dealing with Blauth IIIb type remains a polemic subject. We hereby suggest "The relative lengthening - thumb stabilization", an original and simple conservative surgery technique for the Blauth IIIb type, in order to satisfy parents and big kids requests of a "five fingered hand". The whole hypoplastic thumb is lowered in a way that lengthens it relatively. An intentional pseudarthrosis is performed between the first metacarpal base and the second metacarpal

A 77-year-old man with Hansen's disease was referred to our hospital because of a small nodular lesion detected adjacent to the pleura in the right lower lobe (S10) on chest CT. He had lost all ten fingers due to Hansen's disease and was using a prosthetic limb after amputation of the right lower leg. Although the patient had an 11-year history of shoulder and back pain and was suspected of having interstitial pneumonia 6 years previously, no detailed examination had been conducted. Bronchoscopy did not yield a definitive diagnosis, and a lung biopsy was performed under thoracoscopic guidance.

An increasing number of rheumatologists have access to ultrasound equipment that provide both color and power Doppler modes, which can be used to investigate musculoskeletal and vascular pathologies. Musculoskeletal Doppler ultrasonography can be used to estimate levels of inflammation, to document the anti-inflammatory effect of agents such as corticosteroids and tumor necrosis factor inhibitors, to differentiate between inflammatory and degenerative disease, and to distinguish between normal and inflamed joints in cases of minor synovial swelling. Vascular Doppler ultrasonography can be used

Grebe syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive acromesomelic dysplasia. The syndrome was studied clinically, radiographically, and genetically in an Omani family with four affected children. The affected persons had normal axial skeletons, severely shortened, and deformed limbs with severity increasing in a proximo-distal gradient, and subluxated joints. The humeri and femora were hypoplastic with distal malformations. The radii/ulnae were shortened and deformed whereas carpal bones were invariably rudimentary or absent. The tibiae appeared rudimentary; fibulae were absent in two children, and s

Hereditary sensory neuropathy Type II (HSN II) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by the loss of peripheral sensory modalities in individuals with otherwise normal development. Patients with HSN II often have chronic ulceration of the fingers and toes, autoamputation of the distal phalanges, and neuropathic joint degeneration associated with loss of pain sensation. Recent descriptions of a similar phenotype in mice carrying a targeted mutation in the low affinity nerve growth factor receptor, p75NGFR, suggested the possibility that mutations in this gene or other members of the n
