Kinase fusion positive intra-osseous spindle cell tumors: A series of eight cases with review of the literature.

Mesenchymal spindle cell tumors with kinase fusions, often presenting in superficial or deep soft tissue locations, may rarely occur in bone. Herein, we describe the clinicopathologic and molecular data of eight bone tumors characterized by various kinase fusions from our files and incorporate the findings with the previously reported seven cases, mainly as single case reports. In the current series all but one of the patients were young children or teenagers, with an age range from newborn to 59 years (mean 19 years). Most tumors (n = 5) presented in the head and neck area (skull base, mastoi

Changes in skin blood flow, respiration and blood pressure in participants reporting motion sickness during sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of the study? We have previously shown that sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation induces greater modulation of skin sympathetic nerve activity, but not muscle sympathetic nerve activity, in participants who report nausea during simulated motion, but the effects on skin blood flow and blood pressure are unknown. What is the main finding and its importance? During vestibular stimulation, nausea was associated with a greater increase in skin blood flow and a progressive reduction in skin sympathetic nerve activity, but no changes in muscle sympathe

A Novel 12q13.2-q13.3 Microdeletion Syndrome With Combined Features of Diamond Blackfan Anemia, Pierre Robin Sequence and Klippel Feil Deformity.

Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare congenital erythroid aplasia with a highly heterogeneous genetic background; it usually occurs in infancy. Approximately 30-40% of patients have other associated congenital anomalies; in particular, facial anomalies, such as cleft palate, are part of about 10% of the DBA clinical presentations. Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is a heterogeneous condition, defined by the presence of the triad of glossoptosis, micrognathia and cleft palate; it occurs in 1/8500 to 1/14,000 births. Klippel Feil (KF) syndrome is a complex of both osseous and visceral anomalies, c

[Effect of acupotomy intervention on cervicomuscular apoptosis in cervical spondylosis rabbits].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of acupotomy therapy on cervicomuscular apoptosis and apoptosis regulator Bax protein expression in cervical spondylosis (CS) rabbits so as to investigate its mechanisms underlying improvement of CS. METHODS: Twenty-four New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into normal control, model, acupotomy and electroacupuncture (EA) groups, with 6 rabbits in each group. The CS model was made by forced head-bowing for 5 hours in a restrained chamber, once daily for 12 weeks. Acupotomy was performed at the starting point of trapezius, the mastoid process attaching poi

Synovial sarcoma involving the head: analysis of 36 cases with predilection to the parotid and temporal regions.

Synovial sarcoma involving the head is rare, and data on the clinicopathologic characteristics of such tumors are scant. In this study, we examined 36 synovial sarcomas of the head excluding tumors in the oral cavity, sinonasal tract, submandibular area, neck, and intracranial space. There were 19 men and 17 women with a mean age of 35 years (range: 4 to 85 y). There was a marked predilection for the parotid (n=14) and temporal regions (n=9), and cheek (n=4). Other locations included mastoid area (n=2), infratemporal fossa (n=2), and one each from the supra-auricular scalp, maxillary, submaxil

Gamma knife surgery for facial nerve schwannomas.

OBJECTIVE: Radical resection of facial nerve schwannomas classically implies a high risk of severe facial palsy. Owing to the rarity of facial palsy after gamma knife surgery (GKS) of vestibular schwannomas, functional evaluation after GKS seems rational in this specific group of patients. To our knowledge, no previous similar evaluation exists in the literature. METHODS: Of 1783 schwannomas of the cerebellopontine angles treated by GKS at Timone University Hospital between July 1992 and May 2003, 11 were diagnosed as originating from the facial nerve. Criteria for this diagnosis were the inv

Otologic effects of topical mitomycin C: phase I-evaluation of ototoxicity.

HYPOTHESIS: To determine ototoxicity of topical mitomycin C when placed in the middle ear at varying concentrations. BACKGROUND: Despite meticulous surgical technique and diligent postoperative care, some patients develop excessive scar and granulation tissue in the middle ear or mastoid cavity. Poor wound healing may result in infection, tympanic membrane perforation, or conductive hearing loss, which may necessitate further surgery. Use of topical mitomycin C in the ear may be beneficial in reducing scar and granulation tissue formation. This phase of the study was developed to determine th

Foreign body neonatal otitis media in infants.

HYPOTHESIS: An influx of amniotic fluid cellular content (AFCC) into the middle ears during birth may lead to the development of a chronic inflammatory process in the form of varying amounts of granulation tissue even if signs of otitis media are absent. This foreign body neonatal otitis media may predispose the child to recurrent otitis media. BACKGROUND: Foreign body neonatal otitis media caused by AFCC was described by Aschoff and elaborated by Wittmaack 100 years ago. Recent studies have shown how AFCC spreads to various middle ear compartments and causes histologic changes, the severity

Multicentre study of detection and false-negative rates in sentinel node biopsy for breast cancer.

To document the clinical presentation, complications, management strategy and post-operative outcomes of extensive cholesteatomas. Cholesteatoma is a well demarcated cystic lesion derived from an abnormal growth of keratinizing squamous epithelium in the temporal bone. Cholesteatomas commonly involve the middle ear, epitympanum, mastoid antrum and air cells and can remain within these confines for a considerable period. Bony erosion is present confined to ossicular chain and scutum initially, but as the cholesteatoma expands, erosion of the otic capsule, fallopian canal and tegmen can occur. E

Pathogenesis of Meniere's disease and Meniere's syndrome.

Meniere's disease can only be studied in patients, since it does not occur spontaneously in animals nor can it be induced in them. However, aspects of the disease such as endolymphatic hydrops can be usefully studied in animals. A study of the natural history (epidemiology) of Meniere's disease demonstrated the three major symptoms (triad) to be vestibular symptoms, auditory symptoms, and aural pressure. Bilaterality occurs in at least one out of 3 patients, and may approach 50% over full lifespans. Aural pressure (74.1%) was common, as was positional vertigo (85.9%) during and/or between atta

Motor Responses of Lumbar Erector Spinae Induced by Electrical Vestibular Stimulation in Seated Participants.

Introduction: The study of motor responses induced by electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS) may help clarify the role of the vestibular system in postural control. Although back muscles have an important role in postural control, their EVS-induced motor responses were rarely studied. Moreover, the effects of EVS parameters, head position, and vision on EVS-induced back muscles responses remain little explored. Objectives: To explore the effects of EVS parameters, head position, and vision on lumbar erector spinae muscles EVS-induced responses. Design: Exploratory, cross-sectional study. Mate

Robot-Assisted Middle Ear Endoscopic Surgery: Preliminary Results on 37 Patients.

Background: Endoscopy during middle ear surgery is advantageous for better exploration of middle ear structures. However, using an endoscope has some weaknesses as surgical gestures are performed with one hand. This may trouble surgeons accustomed to using two-handed surgery, and may affect accuracy. A robot-based holder may combine the benefits from endoscopic exposure with a two-handed technique. The purpose of this study was to assess the safety and value of an endoscope held by a teleoperated system. Patients and Methods: A case series of 37 consecutive patients operated using endoscopic e
