Changes in long-term employment and income following COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) infection among Jewish and Arab populations in Israel.

BACKGROUND: The impact of Coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) extends beyond health, potentially affecting long-term income and employment dynamics. In Israel, disparities exist between Jewish and Arab populations across many dimensions, including socioeconomic. The study's primary aim was to compare changes in employment and income among COVID-19-infected and non-infected participants among Jews and Arabs, the two main population groups comprising the population of Israel. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study between March 2021 and June 2022 among adults employed prior to the pandem

"It seems enormously valuable to me." Perspectives of Dutch (potential) carriers of genetic FTD on onset-predictive biomarker testing.

BACKGROUND: Onset-predictive biomarker tests (OPBT) in genetic frontotemporal dementia (FTD) may be used to recruit mutation carriers into preventive clinical trials before symptoms manifest. This would require disclosure of OPBT results to potential participants. This study investigates the perspectives of Dutch presymptomatic mutation carriers and individuals at 50% risk of genetic FTD on disclosure of OPBT results. It focuses on their willingness to receive OPBT results, what impacts they foresee from disclosure, and their preferences for the process of disclosure. METHODS: Semi-structured

Recruitment, Retention, and Training of Citizen Scientists in Translational Medicine Research: A Citizen Science Initiative on Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Citizen science is a participatory science approach in which members of the public (citizens) collaborate with scientists and professional researchers and become involved in research and innovation activities, resulting in the co-creation of scientific knowledge and innovation. Citizen science has been widely applied in research, particularly in the social sciences, environmental sciences, information and communication technologies, and public health. However, the application of this approach in clinical sciences, particularly in translational medicine research, is still nascent. This explorat

Thyroid tuberculosis mimicking multinodular goiter: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the second most common infectious cause of death in adults worldwide. The ability of this organism to efficiently establish latent infection has enabled it to spread to nearly one-third of individuals worldwide. Approximately 8 million new cases of active tuberculosis disease occur each year, leading to about 1.7 million deaths. The disease incidence is magnified by the concurrent epidemic of human immunodeficiency virus infection. A total of 1.3 million people died from tuberculosis in 2022. In 2022, an estimated 10.6 million people fell ill with tube

Contraceptive Risk Events among Family Planning Specialists: a Cross Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Proponents of abortion restriction cite advancements in contraceptive technology as a reason against the need for abortion care today, most recently through oral arguments in the Supreme Court of the United States case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health. However, consistent and correct use of contraception requires reproductive health literacy. Our objectives were to quantify contraceptive risk events and assess contraceptive history and preferences among a population well-equipped to evade contraceptive risks, family planning specialists following initiation of their medical trainin

Exploring the gender difference in type 2 diabetes incidence in a Swiss cohort using latent class analysis: an intersectional approach.

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes is multifactorial and influenced by the intersection of gender-related variables and other determinants of health. The aim of this study was to highlight the intersectional social position of the participants and disentangle its role from administrative sex in predicting the development of type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Using CoLaus|PsyCoLaus study, a Swiss single-centre prospective cohort initiated in 2003 and including 6733 participants (age 35-75 years; 54% women) at baseline, we conducted latent class analyses using gender-related variables (eg, risk-taking behavi

Risk of COVID-19 infection in long-term survivors of blood or marrow transplantation: a BMTSS report.

There is limited information regarding COVID-19 in long-term blood or marrow transplant (BMT) survivors. We leveraged the BMT Survivor Study (BMTSS) to address this gap. BMTSS included patients who underwent BMT at 1 of 3 sites in the United States between 1974 and 2014 and survived ≥2 years after BMT. A sibling cohort serves as a non-BMT comparison group. Participants (2430 BMT survivors; 780 non-BMT participants) completed the BMTSS survey between October 2020 and November 2021 about COVID-19 testing, risk mitigation behaviors, morbidity, and health care use. Median age at BMT was 46 years (

Epidural Steroid Injections and the Risk of Osteoporosis in Lumbar Spondylosis Patients: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) involve the administration of steroids and local anesthetics into the spinal epidural space, and they are performed by inserting a needle between the ligamentum flavum and dura. This procedure is suitable for patients with lumbosacral radiculopathy secondary to disc herniation or postsurgical radicular pain. The relief period of the analgesic medications may be prolonged by > 6 weeks, resulting in nonsurgical management becoming a suitable option. However, the negative effect of ESIs on bone mineral density has been reported. OBJECTIVES: We aimed

Impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the perception of home meals and meal-related variables: A large-scale study within the Italian population during the acute phase of the pandemic.

Italy was the first European country struck by the COVID-19 epidemic and experienced a national lockdown. This study explored the effect of lockdown on the perception of any meals prepared and/or conducted at home (home meals) and investigated which variables played a role in this. A group of Italians (n = 3,060) not suspected/diagnosed as having COVID-19 (18-91 years old; 33% males) completed an online survey during the first lockdown (April 2020). Liking for home meals either increased (51% of the population) or did not vary (43%), while it decreased for only 6% of respondents. Total meal in
