Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare pulmonary infection in patients without known predisposing lung disease.

We tried to characterize the clinical features and findings on chest high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of patients with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare (MAI) pulmonary infection without known predisposing lung disease and with no immunodeficiency. We also aimed to clarify the small airway and alveolar inflammation using bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from the affected regions. MAI infection was diagnosed in 53 patients from respiratory samples, including sputum and materials obtained using a fiberoptic bronchoscope. None had a predisposing lung disease or immunodeficiency, as assesse

Assessment of the histopathological lesions and chemical analysis of feral cats to the smoke from the Kuwait oil fires.

Twenty-six adult or subadult feral cats were collected from Kuwait approximately 8 months after the ignition of the Kuwait oil wells. These animals were obtained from two sources: 12 animals from Kuwait City, a relatively smoke-free area, and 14 from the city of Ahmadi, an area with heavy smoke. Animals were euthanized and a complete set of tissues consisting of all major organs was taken for histopathology. Samples of lung, liver, kidney, urine, and blood were also taken for toxicology. Histopathological lesions observed in the lung were mild accumulations of anthracotic pigment in the lungs

Biochemical basis of ozone toxicity.

Ozone (O3) is the major oxidant of photochemical smog. Its biological effect is attributed to its ability to cause oxidation or peroxidation of biomolecules directly and/or via free radical reactions. A sequence of events may include lipid peroxidation and loss of functional groups of enzymes, alteration of membrane permeability, and cell injury or death. An acute exposure to O3 causes lung injury involving the ciliated cell in the airways and the type 1 epithelial cell in the alveolar region. The effects are particularly localized at the junction of terminal bronchioles and alveolar ducts, as

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis in man. Light- and electron-microscopic studies of 18 lung biopsies.

Light- and electron-microscopic changes produced by hypersensitivity pneumonitis were analyzed in open lung biopsies taken from 18 patients with chronic forms of the disease. The main changes observed were: alveolitis (both luminal and mural), granulomas, intraalveolar buds, and interstitial fibrosis. The cells infiltrating the alveolar walls were mainly lymphocytes. Occasionally these lymphocytes presented irregularities in the contours of the nuclear membranes and resembled Sézary cells. In one patient, a few lymphocytes were found that resembled "hand-mirror" cells. Intraalveolar macrophage

Distribution of plasma cells and other cells containing immunoglobulin in the respiratory tract of normal man and class of immunoglobulin contained therein.

The anatomical distribution of plasma cells and other cells containing immunoglobulin in the respiratory tract, and the relative proportions of the immunoglobulin classes have been estimated on necropsy tissues from nine adult human subjects without respiratory disease, five non-smokers and four smokers, none of whom had cough or sputum. Cell counts on multiple sections stained by immunofluorescent methods for the presence of immunoglobulin were carried out on the upper trachea, main bronchus, and lower lobe bronchus. Cells containing immunoglobulin were found mostly in the submucous glands bu

Diagnostic yield of lung point-of-care ultrasound in children with suspected pneumonia in a resource limited setting: a prospective observational study.

Pneumonia is a leading cause of mortality for children under five worldwide and is often diagnosed using WHO clinical criteria. In resource- … rated hypoxemia. LUS was adequate in 42/46 (91%) children. LUS identified pneumonia in 25/42 (59%), bronchiolitis in 2/42 (5%), and normal lung in 15/42 (36%). CXR was completed in 40/46 (87%) children and showed pneumonia in 18/40 (45%). For the 36 children with both LUS and CXR, four (11%) demonstrated pneumonia on CXR but not LUS, compared to 11 (30%) who ha …

CXCR3/CXCL10 Axis-Mediated T Cell Infiltration in the Lungs of Patients With HTLV-1-Associated Diseases: Implications for Subclinical Pulmonary Involvement.

HTLV-1 is a retrovirus associated with adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) and inflammatory diseases, including HTLV-1-associated myelopath … ar septa and peribronchiolar regions in HAB and HAM, consistent with T cell-mediated alveolitis and bronchiolitis, and CXCL10 expression was elevated in infiltrated lesions. Collectively, these findings implicate the CXCR3/CXCL10 axis as a common pathway for pulmonary T cell recruitment in HTLV-1-associated diseases.

Automated lung sound detection via Bi-GRU-modified SqueezeNet architecture with new stock well feature set.

Lung sound analysis is critical for diagnosing respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchiectasis, bronchiolitis, COPD, LRTI, pneumonia, and URTI. Traditional diagnostic methods rely heavily on physicians' expertise, making them time-consuming and subjective. To address these limitations, this study introduces a novel deep learning-based model, Bidirectional-Gated Recurrent Unit-Modified SqueezeNet (BGRMSNet), for automated lung sound detection and classification. The proposed approach consists of four key phases: preprocessing, feature extraction, data augmentation, and detection. In the pre…

Analysis of DNA methyltransferase 3 alpha expression during respiratory syncytial virus strain A infection.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a seasonal pathogen known to cause lower respiratory tract infections, including bronchiolitis and pneumonia, and it is associated with an increased risk of developing asthma and recurrent wheezing in pediatric populations. Epigenetic mechanisms, such as DNA methylation and histone modifications, have been implicated in regulating host immune responses during viral infections. In this study, we investigated DNMT3A expression, a de novo DNA methyltransferase, during RSV infection. We queried the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database for RNA-sequencing datas…
