Energy and economic performance of a PCM-infused brick with metal foam for passive building cooling.

The substantial energy demand for space conditioning in buildings remains a critical barrier to global environmental sustainability. This study presents a numerical investigation into a novel, passively enhanced brick designed to mitigate this issue through the integration of latent heat storage. The proposed system embeds a vertical cylindrical enclosure filled with n-Octadecane phase change material (PCM) and a stainless-steel porous foam-implemented to counteract the PCM's low thermal conductivity-within a standard clay brick. Employing a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) mod

Associations between insomnia and body mass index among the general Norwegian adult population: The Tromsø Study 2015-2016.

Aims: Insufficient sleep and increasing body mass index (BMI) are two emerging, and often related, public health concerns. Limited attention has been given to how insomnia is associated with BMI, particularly in subarctic regions with extreme seasonal climate and daylight differences. We aimed to investigate the association between insomnia and BMI among community-dwelling residents of Tromsø, Norway stratified by sex. Methods: This cross-sectional study was based on data from the seventh survey of the Tromsø Study (Tromsø7). We included 15,364 participants aged 40-65 years, who had complete B

Technology on Snow and Ice: Innovation, Monitoring, and Performance for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

Elite performance in Olympic winter sports depends on the interplay among the athlete, equipment, and the snow or ice. This naturally evolves with temperature, humidity, wind, preparation, and contact between the equipment and its surface. Together, these factors continuously rebalance the forces of gravity, aerodynamic drag, and friction, requiring athletes, coaches, and organizers to adapt technique, equipment, and surface management, e.g., snow grooming and salting, ice resurfacing or pebbling, and rink climate control. This narrative review (SANRA-guided) synthesizes the scientific literat

Network analysis of flowering time genes suggests regulatory changes among SOC1 orthologues in response to cold in Brassica napus.

Flowering plants respond to multiple environmental and endogenous cues to determine the timing of their transition from the vegetative to floral state. Most of our knowledge of the gene regulatory network (GRN) controlling the floral transition has been derived from the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. This knowledge needs to be translated to crop plants to support the development of varieties that can be grown in different and rapidly changing climate conditions. However, due to increased genome complexity and limited prior knowledge, its translation into crops is not always straightforward

Trophic regulation constrains ecosystem carbon accumulation under global change.

Global change is rapidly reshaping the ecosystem carbon cycle, yet how trophic regulation-a fundamental driver of ecosystem biogeochemical cycling-mediates these responses remains poorly understood. Here we present a global synthesis of interactions between trophic regulation and major global change factors (GCFs: fertilization, warming, fire, increased precipitation, drought, and multiple GCFs), integrating 708 paired full-factorial experimental tests across 132 studies worldwide. We show that while GCFs alone increase ecosystem carbon stocks by 27% on average, their interactions with herbivo

Revisiting gall anatomy through a functional-trait approach across environmental gradients.

Different gall morphotypes reflect the reactivity of host plants and the specificity of their interactions with gall-inducing organisms. Gall structure is functionally divided into internal and external tissue compartments, which play nutritional and protective roles, respectively. We propose that gall structure is functionally responsive to environmental gradients, with a trade-off between investment in external and internal compartments that varies consistently with environmental cues. Furthermore, we also expect to identify patterns in the expression of anatomical traits across different en

Integration of Multidimensional Challenges by Roots in the Life of a Plant.

Roots of vascular plants continuously explore the soil environment and optimize their growth behavior by stimulating or suppressing local growth depending on the spatially diverse environmental conditions of the rooting substrate. The developmental toolbox of roots comprises activity control of apical meristems, initiation and growth of root hairs, lateral and adventitious root formation and cambial growth and, cum grano salis, is well understood. The underlying molecular mechanisms have been described in some detail, in particular with respect to single environmental variables. In a converse

Salting-Out Engineered Sulfonated Cellulosic Hydrogel with Proton Hopping Pathways for Integrated Water Purification and Electricity Generation.

Interfacial solar evaporators capable of cogenerating clean water and electricity offer a promising solution to the water-energy nexus, yet large-scale implementation remains limited by expensive materials and energy-intensive fabrication. Here, we present a bio-derived, low-cost, and scalable sulfonated delignified biomass hydrogel (SSH) with a salting-out structured architecture that integrates solar-driven interfacial evaporation and hydrovoltaic power generation. The SSH, constructed from sulfonated delignified biomass, LDH@MXene photothermal fillers, and poly(vinyl alcohol), undergoes sal

Cross-sector deep learning scales life cycle assessment using unified textual descriptions.

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a foundational framework for quantifying global environmental impacts to guide decarbonization and circular economy transitions. Yet, conventional inventory compilation remains severely bottlenecked by data scarcity and intensive manual curation, with existing machine learning solutions typically confined to isolated industrial sectors rather than offering a scalable way to overcome these limitations. This fragmentation prevents pan-industrial scaling, thereby masking hidden environmental risks and hindering rapid, data-driven sustainability interventions. Here w

Research opportunities to advance cardiovascular health through a planetary health lens.

Cardiovascular health (CVH) across the life course requires stable, nurturing environments and a healthy planet. Increasing human demands on the earth's resources destabilize our world's ecosystems, compromising CVH. Unique research opportunities for cardiovascular researchers exist at the intersection of planetary and CVH. Using systems thinking can reveal cardiovascular and planetary health connections and mechanisms of action. For example, meeting global demands for water, food and energy threatens food, water and air quality at the local level, and with it, cardiovascular health. A refined

CRISPR/Cas9 engineering: Insights into tomato fruit development, stress resilience via brassinosteroid pathways.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), a cornerstone of global agriculture and nutrition, has undergone decades of breeding focused on yield and stress resilience. Yet, consumer-driven traits such as fruit uniformity, flavor complexity, and nutritional value remain suboptimal. The emerging convergence of hormonal biology and precision genome editing presents a transformative approach to addressing this gap. Brassinosteroids (BRs), a class of steroidal phytohormones, act as central regulators of cell expansion, tissue patterning, and developmental plasticity. Their signaling cascade, initiated by perce

Highlighting gaps in knowledge and capabilities that limit decision-making to protect the health of outdoor workers exposed to wildfire smoke.

Pollutants in smoke from wildland and wildland urban interface (WUI) fires present an increasing risk to outdoor workers, field technicians, and others as the frequency and severity of these fires increase due to expansion of the WUI, changing land management practices, and climate change. Recent advancements have improved our understanding and ability to track and model wildfires, smoke plume chemistry, and associated health impacts. There are indications that smoke from burning certain fuels, including artificial materials present in many WUI fires and other biomass burned under certain cond

Upper thermal tolerance of the euryhaline fish Fundulus heteroclitus is lower in freshwater and shaped by environmental salinity-acclimation time interaction.

This study investigates whether salinity affects the upper thermal tolerance (CTmax) of the euryhaline mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus). Mummichogs were acclimated to seawater (38 ppt, SW) or freshwater (<1 ppt, FW) at 18.5°C (Tacc), then transferred to the opposite salinity. CTmax and physiological profiles were assessed on days 0, 1, 3, 6, and 13 post-transfer. CTmax was consistently lower in FW than in SW, regardless of prior acclimation. Compared to the Tacc controls, CTmax exposure reduced plasma ion levels in FW-transferred fish and increased them in SW-transferred fish. In both salinit

India's biofuel blending policy presents serious trade-offs with land use, nitrogen emissions and food security.

This study examines the environmental and resource implications of India's 20% ethanol blending mandate, with a focus on its effects on land use, water and fertilizer use, and greenhouse gas emissions. Using a global partial equilibrium model of the land-use sector, MAgPIE, we evaluate scenarios involving different feedstock combinations involving molasses and sugarcane juice. Results reveal that ethanol production from molasses exerts considerable pressure on natural resources due to the high land, water, and fertilizer demands of sugarcane. Conversely, ethanol derived from sugarcane juice pr

Can large-scale climate patterns predict nitrate export mechanisms from agricultural land?

Nitrate losses to waterbodies is particularly associated with intensive agricultural and rainfall events are important periods of mobilisation, it is therefore important to understand the drivers for these transfers. In western Europe, weather is strongly influenced by large scale atmospheric systems in the North Atlantic. Here, we explore the link between such atmospheric systems and temporal changes in water quality using 12 years of high-frequency nitrate and discharge data. The data was collected from 5 hydrologically-isolated field-scale grassland catchments. Rainfall driven discharge and
