Associations between health-related behaviors and self-reported cognitive symptoms in U.S. military personnel injured on deployment.

Health behaviors may be core contributors to cognition and mental health following mild traumatic brain injury (TBI). The aims of the present study examined: (1) whether health behaviors including sleep duration, alcohol use, and physical activity differed in injured military personnel with and without deployment-related mild TBI history and (2) the relative contributions of health behaviors and deployment-related mild TBI history to self-reported cognitive, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depressive symptoms. Participants included 3076 military personnel injured on deployment partic

Internet-based interventions for behavioral addictions: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Behavioral addictions are a public health problem that causes harm to both individuals and society. Internet-based interventions offer potential benefits over face-to-face therapy for the treatment of behavioral addictions, including their accessibility, perceived anonymity, and low costs. We systematically reviewed the characteristics and effectiveness of these interventions. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in: PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. A standardized methodological quality assessment was perfo

The effect of health and nutrition education intervention on women's postpartum beliefs and practices: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: 'Sitting month' is the Chinese tradition for postpartum customs. Available studies indicate that some of the traditional postpartum practices are potentially harmful for women's health. However, no intervention study aiming at postpartum practices has been performed. In this paper we evaluated the effect of a health and nutrition education intervention, which focused on improving postpartum dietary quality and optimal health behaviors. METHODS: The study design was a randomized controlled trial conducted in both urban and rural area of Hubei between August 2003 and June 2004. A to

Verbal abuse by the teacher and child adjustment from kindergarten through grade 6.

OBJECTIVES: Many adults mention past incidences of verbal abuse by the teacher as the most overwhelming negative experience in their lives. The present study examined (1) the course and stability of verbal abuse by the teacher from kindergarten through grade 4 and (2) the link between verbal abuse by the teacher and children's behavioral, emotional, and academic adjustment. DESIGN: Participants were 399 children (177 girls) who were assessed yearly over a period of 7 years, starting in kindergarten. Verbal abuse by the teacher, as well as acceptance versus rejection by the peer group from kin

Behavioral and neural consequences of prenatal exposure to nicotine.

OBJECTIVE: To review evidence for the neurodevelopmental effects of in utero exposure to nicotine. Concerns about long-term cognitive and behavioral effects of prenatal exposure to nicotine arise from reports of increased rates of disruptive behavioral disorders in children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy. The relatively high rate of tobacco smoking among pregnant women (25% of all pregnancies in the U.S.) underlines the seriousness of these concerns. METHOD: This review examines the largest and most recent epidemiological and clinical studies that investigated the association of prenat

Regularized CCA identifies sex-specific brain-behavior associations in adolescent psychopathology.

Adolescence is a critical period of neural development and a sensitive window for the emergence of psychiatric symptoms. Resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI) provides a unique opportunity to investigate brain-behavior associations. However, the role of sex-specific differences in these associations remains underexplored, despite their potential to reveal heterogeneous neurobiological mechanisms and guide personalized interventions. In this study, we analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, comprising 7,892 adolescents (9-10 years old, 3,896 females). Using

Breaking the Stigma: A Systematic Review of Antipsychotic Efficacy in Children and Adolescents with Behavioral Disorders.

Background/Objectives: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD) are important behavior disorders in children and adolescents, often linked with long-term psychosocial problems. Antipsychotics are frequently prescribed to manage severe symptoms and improve behavior, but their efficacy in this population is still unclear and a lot of physicians are remittent in prescribing them. This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of antipsychotic treatment in reducing symptoms associated with ODD and CD in children and adolescents. Methods: Studies that investigated how

When social anxiety disorder co-exists with risk-prone, approach behavior: investigating a neglected, meaningful subset of people in the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication.

Little is known about people with social anxiety disorder (SAD) who are not behaviorally inhibited. To advance knowledge on phenomenology, functional impairment, and treatment seeking, we investigated whether engaging in risk-prone behaviors accounts for heterogeneous outcomes in people with SAD. Using the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication (NCS-R) dataset, our analyses focused on people with current (N = 679) or lifetime (N = 1143) SAD diagnoses. Using latent class analysis on NCS-R risk-prone behavior items, results supported two SAD classes: (1) a pattern of behavioral inhibition and r

Prenatal manganese levels linked to childhood behavioral disinhibition.

Although manganese (Mn) is an essential mineral, high concentrations of the metal can result in a neurotoxic syndrome affecting dopamine balance and behavior control. We report an exploratory study showing an association between Mn deposits in tooth enamel, dating to the 20th and 62-64th gestational weeks, and childhood behavioral outcomes. In a sample of 27 children, 20th week Mn level was significantly and positively correlated with measures of behavioral disinhibition, specifically, play with a forbidden toy (36 months), impulsive errors on a continuous performance and a children's Stroop t

Enhancement of Social Communication Behaviors in Young Children With Autism Affects Maternal Stress.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show difficulties in social communication behaviors, emotion regulation and daily living skills, and they frequently present with challenging behaviors. In parents of children with ASD, higher rates of stress and mental health problems have been reported than in parents of either typically developing children or children with other conditions. In this study, we tested whether maternal well-being changes with improved social communicative behaviors of children with ASD receiving early intervention. We examined developmental changes in 72 pre-schooler

Disruptive behavior disorders: taking an RDoC(ish) approach.

The disruptive behavior disorders include Conduct Disorder (CD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These disorders are highly comorbid with each other as well as with mood and anxiety disorders and personality disorders (particularly borderline personality disorder). The goal of this chapter is to consider these disorders from an RDoC(ish) approach. In other words, we will outline four functional processes and the behavioral implications of dysfunction within these processes. Moreover, we will briefly consider how dysfunction in one might

Septo-optic dysplasia: the clinical insignificance of an absent septum pellucidum.

Neurodevelopmental assessments were performed on seven patients with optic nerve hypoplasia and absence of the septum pellucidum on MRI. The evaluation included neurological status, language development, neuropsychological functioning, and behavioral and emotional adjustment. Six of the seven were found to have normal cognitive development, intact neurological status, normal language development and age-appropriate behavior. Abnormal findings included early poor motor coordination, which was felt to be closely related to decreased visual acuity, as well as subtle visual attentional problems wh

Compensatory speech behaviors in individuals with cleft palate: a regulation/control phenomenon?

The articulation errors associated with velopharyngeal incompetence are of particular interest to clinicians and researchers because the problems they pose usually remain after surgical repair and the reasons they appear may have important implications for speech-motor control. The intriguing question of why individuals develop and maintain such detrimental behaviors has been the focus of our laboratory's attention over the past 25 years. The purpose of this paper is to present a hypothesis dealing with compensatory speech behaviors in cleft palate, provide some data in support of this hypothe

Academic and Behavioral Outcomes in School-Age South African Children Following Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Background: Children who have sustained severe traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) demonstrate a range of post-injury neurocognitive and behavioral sequelae, which may have adverse effects on their academic and behavioral outcomes and interfere with school re-entry, educational progress, and quality of life. These post-TBI sequelae are exacerbated within the context of a resource-poor country like South Africa (SA) where the education system is in a somewhat precarious state especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Objectives: To describe behavioral and academic outcomes of a group of
